Stash Insanity.... Lets see your stash!

One definition I have read on insanity is "Doing the same thing over and over, each time expecting a different result".

By that standard, I am in fact insane.. at least when it comes to the stash.  I buy, I think  " That's going to be great when I build it!" And it sits. Need to build much much faster!

This has been going on since I was 14..   been in love with 1/32 WWII aircraft since the late 60s when Revell introduced their 1/32 line. 

My wife agrees I am insane... but having said that, she is wholly supportive of all of my hobbies (motorcycles, coaching football (Canadian (CFL) and American (NFL)).

I am very very lucky.

 

Every few years I pull out everything and catalogue it...stocktaking, I guess... I keep everything in large shipping boxes and in the act of buying and selling, things can get mixed up.

 

So here are some pics of the madness. I say some because it doesn't include all the Wingnut Wings kits or the Tamiya 1/16 RC armor kits I have (already re-packed them up/stored them).

 

If you can believe it, my stash has actually shrunk by a lot, mainly because of all the 1/35 armor I've sold to buy the  1/16 Tamiya RC tanks.

 

 

 

 

 

 

At my age.. 65... I know I have to downsize a lot .... don't want our kids to have to deal with this when I am gone.

As I just moved from Montana back to Colorado, All my stash is in big moving boxes. That said, I have probably 150 large-scale planes and maybe 50 to 100 1/48 sprinkled with a few 72nd scale kits. There are several 32nd scale kits that are calling my name, so I'll be adding soon!

 For a time, 32nd seemed dead... at that point I'd purchased a number of Combat Models/ID Models vac kits, and  started buying 35th armor.

Then the 32 rebirth began and now we have a plethora of choice.. 3d print kits ...who would have thought 10 years ago?

My stash is scattered all over the place, so photographing it all would be an issue, specifically as most of it is on 4' wide plywood shelves and three rows deep, spanning 8' and reaching from shelf to shelf (3 shelves, so roughly 224 cubic feet), plus more in boxes and totes.

I'm at the point where I need to start selling some - and in fact have been. My stash is also in multiple locations around the house, so impossible to photograph easily. When we moved house a few years ago, my stash alone went into 75 boxes, and currently stands at 388 unbuilt kits, and another 32 marked as "in progress". My wife also has a small stash of 7 kits! The longest-serving kits in my stash I bought when I was 16 in about 1982, and I'm finding the process of selling any of them quite difficult!

My rule once was 'Buy It Build It' (BIBI), but those days are long gone. Back when, I stuck together nicely without research or reference material of any kind except that little in the kit box. Them was fast builds.

 

Settling in the same property after career gallivanting for decades gave me stash storage space which is partly responsible for my stash increase, plus additions to disposable income, shrinking 'free' time to build models, attractive new kit releases, shifting interests, increased access to fascinating aircraft profiles in print and online that prompt purchases, inspirational builds shared by master modellers on LSP, a few irresistible bargains - rarely on Ebay btw, aircraft type obsessions, operator or era themes & co & co.

 

There is a tag, 'A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?' Q.E.D. my stash, but photographs of it are not available, sorry. Your collection is magnificent. Do retailers hold as much stock in our scales?

 

I hope your stash gives you joy, Dave. My unmade kits mostly do. When they don't, I give them away or sell 'em.

Such wise words Chris. I have just been to count my stash…….16! Not worth a photograph, but I hope to increase it by one shortly…..an MDC Typhoon would you believe?

I keep an Xcel spreadsheet to record my stash, and on it I have 125x1/32 scale aircraft kits, 34x 1/48 scale aircraft kits, 40x1/35 scale Armour kits, several 1/350 scale warships and a few 1/24 scale aircraft kits.

I moved the 1/32 scale kits out of the loft in 2022 but the rest are still up there as I've run out of space.

I dont feel so bad now!! I thought that my 30 unbuilt kits was a lot…

Hahaha - what collecting for the stash really is, is actually our subconscious attempt to manifest more time in our lives… 

A sad reality to face given that we all know how mortal we are… most of us here at LSP have more sand in the bottom of the sand clock than we have in the upper part!

What an under-achiever I am, 2 in build, 1 almost complete and 4 in the stash which includes a gash Revell 1:32 Mosquito that will be hung from the ceiling as a statement i.e. best viewed from a distance due to it being a lousy kit that I bought on impulse.

Wow, all I can say is that some of you must be very wealthy to have purchased all those models. It looks like you could open up a hobby store with the stock that I see in the photos. I hope you get the chance to build them before Father Time catches up.

Haha, collecting kits, and actually building kits are two separate and distinct hobbies.

Bear in mind that I've personally been growing my stash for more than 40 years, and many of its constituent kits are old. I've also had the very great fortune to have been gifted many kits over the years, as well as having received a large number of review samples and some test shots (those days are largely over, however). And lastly, most of the kits I've bought were sourced from the second-hand market at heavily reduced prices.

 

So no, I'm not wealthy!
