Aptivaboy Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) While I await my Revell Mark IXC to arrive, I've started working on this ancient beast! https://imgur.com/I3y029Nhttps://imgur.com/I3y029N https://imgur.com/a/Zb9Bmkt https://imgur.com/9Ksx3Juhttps://imgur.com/9Ksx3Juhttps://imgur.com/9Ksx3Ju https://imgur.com/Oj4hrMchttps://imgur.com/Oj4hrMchttps://imgur.com/NFlJjVU https://imgur.com/Oj4hrMc https://imgur.com/m9z6RWE Yeah, it has retractable landing gear and all of the great toylike features that we all loved as a kid! And ooohhh!!! I can even enter a contest! I can build the new Apollo moonship!!!!! Is this great, or what? I'll be building this kit without my favorite model buddy, Lucy Kitty, aka Sweet Lucy, aka Lucyfur. The best modeling kitty ever, she was either sitting on my shoulder or on the table watching quietly while I built. I'll be building this one in her kitty memory. https://imgur.com/qmiWtuR https://imgur.com/qmiWtuR Edited May 23 by Aptivaboy Alain Gadbois, Erwin and TimW 3
LSP_Kevin Posted May 23 Posted May 23 Hi Bob, It looks like you're linking to the Imgur page that contains the image you want to post, rather than directly to the image itself. I don't us Imgur, so I can't offer any advice about how to grab the direct URL, but I'm sure there are other members who can. If all else fails, right-click over the image and select your browser's version of "Copy Image Link", and then paste it here. Kev

I have reverted back to the old design, this allowed me to click on a picture I want to post, which opens up a sort of pop-up version with links to the right hand side. Then copy the 'direct link' using the appropriate button. all you need to do then is to paste that link in your post.
Aptivaboy Posted May 23 Author Posted May 23 I actually did use the Direct Link. That was the result. It isn't ideal, but just clicking on the link will get one to the images. The model is missing some pieces so I had to order another ancient Revell Spit as a donor. Fun times!
Alex Posted May 23 Posted May 23 If you use the "Insert Image from URL" button at the bottom right of your post editor, it should work. I did that with the one above. LSP_Kevin, Phantom2, coogrfan and 2 others 4 1
Aptivaboy Posted June 30 Author Posted June 30 Work has begun! Any ideas on masks for the clear canopy parts?
dennismcc Posted June 30 Posted June 30 A real blast from the past, I remember buying one of those when I first discovered 1/32 scale, and it's still in my display cabinet, so will follow and see what modern magic can do for it. Cheers Dennis
Aptivaboy Posted July 1 Author Posted July 1 These were fun to build as kids, right? I added the Revell Mk. IXc's instrument panel, chopping and trimming to make it fit. I also used the Barracuda seat and mounting assembly, shoehorning it in. A major issue with these old kits is that they've lost pieces, many kits being open boxes. Both of my donor kits are missing the seat mounting brackets, but the Barracuda one has everything including the armor plate behind the pilot. What's amazing is how nice the surface detail is for the era. I mean, the rivets and all are very petite. How accurate they are, I'll leave to others. I'll post pics tomorrow. geedubelyer 1

Tamiya tape, a steel ruler, and a sharp knife with new blade This would also accord with the retro vibe of the build. Good luck with your Seafire, I look forward to seeing what you do with it. geedubelyer 1
Aptivaboy Posted July 1 Author Posted July 1 Apologies for my messy outdoors modeling area. The Revell Spit Mk. IXc is lurking there, as is a Hurri. I'm alway sin awe and jealous of those of you with dedicated modeling rooms. Anyway, I've moderately upgraded the interior of the Seafire. Having said that, there's a lot of warpage and very little is absolutely straight. Landrotten Highlander, denders, Erwin and 3 others 6
Aptivaboy Posted July 3 Author Posted July 3 Quote Tamiya tape, a steel ruler, and a sharp knife with new blade This would also accord with the retro vibe of the build. That's actually what I did! For the wheels, at least. I used the top of a Tamiya putty tube and used it as a cutting template. It was nearly the exactly correct size. As soon as the clear coat dries, I'll assemble the wheels and use the handmade masks to mask off the hub area, then hit the rest of the tires with Nato Black.
Aptivaboy Posted July 3 Author Posted July 3 (edited) PS. could someone check me on the colors? The undersides should be Sky, as per the Fleet Air Arm painting practices. However, should the vertical band in front of the tail also be Sky, or some form of white? The instructions give ZERO painting information. Many thanks! Bob Edited July 3 by Aptivaboy
John B Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Nice start, I built the Mk.I version of this kit a few years ago. Yes, it does have a lot of positives as far as surface detail is concerned. Sorry, can't help with the masking issue, I used Tamiya tape thinly cut to fit along the edges and used liquid mask in between. Here is a page from the Airframe & Miniature No.12 Spitfire Part 1 Merlin Powered (includes Seafire). This should help get you in the Ball Park or Cricket field. Respectfully, JB geedubelyer 1
Aptivaboy Posted July 3 Author Posted July 3 Many thanks, John! I'll go with Sky both for the band and the undersides, then. Its so odd how the box art has a VERY light grey instead of the understated colors that the Fleet Air Arm used. The fuselage is all sealed up, the gear and bay doors are painted, and I'll do the wings tomorrow. Then, I'll go back to the IXc that I'm also working on. Bob John B 1
dennismcc Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Just as encouragement here is my ancient (1998 ish) build of the kit and a picture of the real thing, it was a fun build back then when I was new to 1/32 scale. By now it should really have been retired but I built it when we lived in Thailand, it then survived moving to Australia and then back to the UK so it can stay in the display cabinet.
