dennismcc Posted May 4 Posted May 4 (edited) Just read this report of a 2 seat Spitfire force landing in a field in Kent, both pilot and passenger are safe and the plane does not look to be seriously damaged. geedubelyer Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Glad the pilot and passenger are unhurt according to the report. I was sent the BBC article by a good friend earlier. The Beeb suggested paramedics had treated someone on the scene. Thankfully it appears not. From the photos the airframe looks repairable , fingers crossed. This does go to show that there is always a risk when enjoying these old machines. Martinnfb 1

CRAZY IVAN5 Posted May 4 Posted May 4 The most important thing is everybody made it out, well shaken I'm sure. I'd be cleaning out my drawers for sure. Martinnfb and geedubelyer 2
LSP_Ron Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Glad nobody was hurt. Definitely repairable but may take a year or more. Look what they did with Red Baron after Steve Hinton's Reno crash. Its flying today as a stock P-15 - Wee Willy II in Chino, It was far far worse than this. Martinnfb and CRAZY IVAN5 2

Landrotten Highlander Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Everything is repairable IF there are sufficient funds. I think the biggest cost will e on the engine: the prop has suffered severe damage which undoubtedly translate to the camshaft in the engine. Glad to hear nobody got hurt as a result of what I read was an engine failure? Martinnfb 1
LSP_Ron Posted May 4 Posted May 4 Agreed on the money issue. The damage doesn't look all that bad. Likely two rad's, carb intake, lower chin cowl and a Merlin/Prop replacement. Still won't be cheap.... CRAZY IVAN5 and Martinnfb 2
Landrotten Highlander Posted May 4 Posted May 4 (edited) what is really weird is that only yesterday in an effort to get my modelling mojo back started converting a spitfire to the twin-seat version with a view to depict this particular aircraft... perhaps I shouldn't have?..... I remember the Red Baron afterwards and thought sure it was headed to the scrap yard I mean there was nothing left. Martinnfb 1

Shoggz Posted May 5 Posted May 5 From the 'Two Seat Spitfire' page on the Book of Face: "You will by now be aware that Spitfire MJ627, operated by FlyaSpitfire.com, made a precautionary off airfield landing on Saturday evening. The pilot on detecting a problem made the difficult, but absolutely correct, decision to land the aircraft immeadiatly. As you can see that landing was carried out to perfection and both pilot and passenger were uninjured. The aircraft itself was only lightly damaged and was back on her undercarriage before departing by road. She will be flying again very soon! Thank you to the pilot for looking after his passenger and the aircraft so well. Thank you to all the Flyaspitfire staff for recovering her so quickly. Thanks also to the other Spitfire operators, farmer and others who offered assistance. Well done to those pages that resisted the urge to comment on the incident before the owner had time to respond themselves. Despite what some of our appalling newspapers reported, this was a private formation flight, the Spitfire seen circling was the second aircraft not the one that landed in the field. The flight had nothing to do with VE Day, no one "crashed" or "plummeted" and no one was "horrified"! All planned flights are continuing as normal and I can't wait to see MJ627 back flying again soon." Sounds like the good old Daily Fail were doing their usual sensationalist reporting..
