LSP_Ron Posted April 28 Posted April 28 Definitely worth the visit. Likely the best in the world for an active airfield and historical restoration of aircraft facility. Furie 1
Kagemusha Posted April 28 Posted April 28 St John's Lane is near Farringdon tube station, which is one stop on the circle and district tube lines to King's Cross. Keep your phone in your pocket when out on the street to avoid theft. MikeC and Furie 1 1
MikeC Posted April 29 Posted April 29 Or finally, for a totally different aviation experience to Duxford - vintage aviation at its finest on a working airfield, and some unique aircraft (Henshaw's Mew Gull and the oldest airworthy aeroplane in the world, for example) there is always Shuttleworth. Train (again from Kings Cross or St Pancras) to Biggleswade (about 40-50 mins) then a short taxi ride from the station - about 5 km at an estimate. There's a lot of choice in this thread: all I will say is that you can't do it all in a few days, but whatever you decide, enjoy it. Furie 1
mozart Posted April 29 Posted April 29 On a “social” side, I would suggest a two hour train ride directly from Waterloo down to Gillingham in delightful Dorset to indulge in an English cream tea chez moi, but unfortunately my diary is fully booked for next week! thierry laurent, Stevepd and Furie 1 1 1
Furie Posted April 29 Author Posted April 29 As for Duxford and Shuttleworth, those are places I'll check out on another trip to London. For this week and next, I'm focusing on helping my son in London, while also enjoying some sightseeing in the city. And about Gillingham — noted! I definitely need to go explore the Delightful Dorset, but that'll most likely be for another visit too. Thanks, guys! mozart and MikeC 2
Shoggz Posted April 29 Posted April 29 Count me in for a meet up on your next visit Denis. You'll have a great time at any of the sites the guys have suggested.. I'm long overdue a visit to Hendon myself - I haven't been for at least 10 years! mozart and Furie 1 1
Pete Fleischmann Posted April 29 Posted April 29 23 hours ago, LSP_Ron said: Yes Hannants, and the Royal Airforce Museum is right around the corner too. Personally if your going to the area I would do the museum over the store first and if you miss the store "oh well". their entire catalogue is on line. The Museum has airframes and stuff you'll not see anywhere else. The only complete Typhoon, one of the only Stuka's, BF-110 and Ju-88's. The only Defiant, the ony Fw-190S, there are so many. Goerings uniform, the only thing left by him. Highly recommended. Yes. do this! used to do this exact excursion every LHR layover when I was flying the widebody Furie and cmayer 1 1
MikeC Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Well, to all those who advised Denis ( @Furie ) about the RAF Museum and/or Hannants, be assured that he found them yesterday, as did I, and we had a great day at the museum. And here we are, doing our bit towards L'Entente Cordiale, in front of some notable exhibits. Typhoon (I think @mozart may have been mentioned at this point ) Hurricane And what else but this actual Battle of Britain veteran Great to meet you Denis, I look forward to the next time you're over. Shoggz Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Great stuff guys! Denis, you've definitely made the most of your sojourn in London! MikeC and Furie 2
mozart Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Fabulous pictures…..have I mentioned Typhoons in the past, don’t quite remember but thanks for the thought! dennismcc, MikeC, Furie and 1 other 2 2
dennismcc Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Great photos, I would love to visit the RAF museum but it is a bit far for us to travel and the thought of driving in London puts me right off. Maybe one day. Cheers Dennis MikeC 1

I believe they have the only Hawker Typhoon in existence, the Tempest is next to the Thunderbolt - beauty and the beast. dennismcc 1

Not any more - they seem to be having an extensive shuffle round of exhibits at the moment. I think someone mentioned the Defiant earlier in this thread: that's now at Cosford, where I saw it a year ago. Edited May 9 by MikeC
