Furie Posted April 28 Posted April 28 (edited) Hi everyone, my son just got a job in London and I'm supposed to go there with him on Saturday to help him settle into his new apartment. I should be heading back to France on Friday. While he’s at work, I’ll have about four days to wander around London. I guess there must be some great model shops over there, and it would be awesome if you could share a few addresses with me. Thanks a lot in advance! Edited April 28 by Furie

LSP_Ron Posted April 28 Posted April 28 Yes Hannants, and the Royal Airforce Museum is right around the corner too. Personally if your going to the area I would do the museum over the store first and if you miss the store "oh well". their entire catalogue is on line. The Museum has airframes and stuff you'll not see anywhere else. The only complete Typhoon, one of the only Stuka's, BF-110 and Ju-88's. The only Defiant, the ony Fw-190S, there are so many. Goerings uniform, the only thing left by him. Highly recommended. rafju, Shoggz, Furie and 4 others 6 1
Duncan Doenitz Posted April 28 Posted April 28 Yes, that's what I was going to suggest. The Imperial War Museum in south London is well worth a visit too with a rare HE-162 Salamander. Their Holocaust exhibition is deeply moving. Elsewhere, bomb damage is still visible on many buildings including St Paul's if you know where to look. Furie 1
MikeC Posted April 28 Posted April 28 If you're interested in naval things too, HMS Belfast, part of the IWM, is well worth a visit. Head for London Bridge Station, then head for the river and you can't exactly miss it. Furie 1

Yes, its pretty much directly across the river from the Tower of London (which is also pretty cool to see) Furie and MikeC 1 1
Furie Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 (edited) Thanks a lot for all your answers, Rafju, Ron, Duncan, and Michael, that's really awesome! I think I know where I'm heading on Sunday! As for the Royal Air Force Museum, I reckon I'll spend a full day there to take my time and see everything properly. Feel free to send me any suggestions for visits related to anything military — tanks, planes, ships, whatever! Thanks again for all the info. Edited April 28 by Furie cmayer 1
LSP_Ron Posted April 28 Posted April 28 The IWM in south London. The Science Museum. Not a lot there for aircraft but some very rare ones. Me-163, Supermarine S4? come to mind. The Cutty Sark (I've never been but want to some day) The Churchill war rooms are definitely interesting and well preserved as they were. That's all that comes to mind right in London. Furie 1
Furie Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 (edited) I know LSP isn’t a travel agency, but I was wondering if it’s possible to get to Duxford by train from a London station? Edited April 28 by Furie
MikeC Posted April 28 Posted April 28 (edited) I suspect the nearest station to Duxford is Cambridge. The IWM site should have the info on a page called "getting here" or similar. Edited April 28 by MikeC Furie 1
LSP_Ron Posted April 28 Posted April 28 I've been three times but I've always taken an early train from Central London to Heathrow then rented a car for the day then reverse back. It's completely doable in a day. Furie 1
Furie Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 Thanks Michael and Tom for your replies. For everyone's sake, it's probably best if I stay away from driving a car. If I don't want to boost the UK’s road accident stats, I think the wisest move is to take the train to Cambridge and then grab a taxi or an Uber. It's safer for everyone... Unless you've recently started driving on the right side of the road and I somehow missed the memo, but I highly doubt it!
Kagemusha Posted April 28 Posted April 28 The quickest train takes 50 minutes from King'sCross, some take longer, costs £31.90 return, an Uber from the station to Duxford about £18. I would recommend downloading the trainline app. It's worth the effort to visit. Furie and LSP_Ron 2
Furie Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 Thanks Kagemusha. I just installed Trainline and there are trains to Cambridge from King's Cross, Liverpool Street, and St Pancras. Since I don't know yet where my son will be living, I'll just see which route makes the most sense depending on where he ends up. For now, the only thing I know is that he's going to be working on St John's Lane.
