Hi All,

I find myself in a bit of a modeling funk.   Nothing really is jumping out at me.   This AM, I stumbled upon a pretty cool picture of a beaten up USN T-28 trainer.  Got me thinking about the old KH kit.    Just wondering what the general consensus is on this kit (specifically the T-28B/D)?    The cockpit looks pretty basic so I'm also wondering if anyone has used the Airies resin cockpit set?    Like all their stuff, it looks amazing but I'm terrified of the fit.    Any suggestion on other good aftermarket would be appreciated.    For decals, it appears that the only one who released any was Caracals.   Nice options but nothing that jumps out at me.

Any info at all is much appreciated.

Hi John,

I made the kit in 2017 and made customized Air America / Laos decals. I can nowadays customized print these, just let me know.

A full modelling report can be found at my webste here...

Check out also the T-28 Walk Arounds that my modelling friend Cees made at the IPMS.NL website...

Enjoy modelling your T-28,

Meindert

Nice build, I've bookmarked your page for future reference!   How did you cut out all those dials for the instrument panel?  That came out quite nicely.

I know several that have built it. They used the Aries pit and it fit fine from what I remember.  I have both kits in the stash and was hoping Quinta would come to the rescue.  I gave up and bought the Eduard sets for them.

Yeah, I’ve been looking around, looks like the Eduard cockpit set is OOS.

AOA decals made a set with SEA airforce aircraft: Trainers no more, Trojans at War,it's sold out on their site, but might be available elsewhere, they have a copy at Hannants.

Berna produce a set for French Air Force aircraft,  LF decals for Congolese, both available at Hannants.

I enjoyed my build of the kit; I don't recall anything being too difficult or challenging. I don't do resin cockpits just resin seats, and I used the AMS Resin (now B&B Resin) seats.

Yea, I think the C was plentiful still.  I searched high and low for the B/D and found one at an online hobby shop in Australia.  Shipping was no worse that across country, just took a little longer.

Thanks for all the info guys.   I pulled the trigger on the kit, the Aeries cockpit set, Caracal decals and Quickboost's exhaust set.   Hopefully this will help me get my mojo back.   Need to start looking at pics of the real thing.   Not sure if I can live with those "divots" or if the real thing has raised rivets, I may replace them with Archer decals.

I built the original demo display version for Glen when KH was starting to promote the kit.....

Personally I thought it was a terrific kit, with just a few niggles. Nothing out of hand, and not anything the average modeler can't handle.

- cowl - it's a 4 part affair, and a bit fumbly to get good seams. The parts fit well, just takes a while to get there

- gear - I don't remember exactly how much, but you will need more nose weight than you think the nose gear can handle.

To that end, a brass nose gear is much preferred.

- prop - the prop shaft is ridiculously too long, I replaced mine with a brass tube since I needed to shorten it anyway.

- air brake - if you want to pose it in the closed position it's a bit of a PITA. OEM it's definitely designed to be posed open.

- engine - the engine bearers are super fiddly, and the instructions for installing them and then engine super suck.

- canopy - the multi part canopy/clear parts do fit really well; in the closed position.

If you want to pose the canopy open (especially the rear canopy) you'll need some creativity

Thank you, that's really helpful.   Any idea who offers brass landing gear?   Been Googling aftermarket bits.  Saw the usual soft lead crap from SAC, didn't see any brass gear.   I'll look into the airbrake fix (or maybe it opens up on the ground once hydraulic pressure bleeds off and it will be a non-issue?).

I don't think the the air brake looses enough pressure to drop while parked, and thr only reason I remember that is that it would have been SO much easier to just let it hang but having not really seen any parked Trojans with it down made the decision to put it up pretty conclusive.

As to the brass gear, ther wasn't even a SAC set for thr kit when I built it, and I'm not sure anyone has actually put a brass set out for it.........

To that end, this kit REALLY needs a brass nose gear at the very least
