Today I started working on the "Fred Sutton rear end". Once you know it's quite obvious that Revell based their moulds on an early Hawk. Oh well with not a lot to do today (Solar panels ordered), it's cutting time. Briefly (as there's now plenty of info out there) the rear end was modified and a longer fillet below the rudder installed. So the kit needs modification to make it like for like. I've sanded the port side shoulder and brought that shoulder line to just infront of the leading edge of the tailplane. Hopefully you can see the difference in the overhead photo. I've got one patch that's super thin (you can see it). I think I'll have to beef that up a bit from behind.

Secondly the area immediately above the exhaust. Again photos on the internet (or Guys build on Britmodeller) for comparison. Like a fool last week I measured the rear 1:1 scale aircraft. From the 12 o'clock position of the panel above the exhaust to the top of the fold of the panel it was 25cm. Scaling that to 1/32 comes out at 7.8mm. So I've cut 2 lines just below the fold of the panel along and up to the bacon slicer. The plastic can easily be encouraged upwards. I'll fill in the sides and attach the rear panel and set it to 8mm tall. I think I'll keep the back end panel married to the original relocated bit of kit and build up the gap to the exhaust with plastic, using the kit part as a template for the circumference of the exhaust. Once done I'll rescribe.

The tail light was 53mm in diameter.

Edit: I came back to just finesse the are and that thin bit did break through. So now a section of plasticard is drying on the inside and then will be filled.

As usual thanks for looking. Again if you see anything wrong please chip in.

Hi again, as you are leaving the air con panel off (aka upper uhf panel/teddy bears ears panel) the kit features the early type of air con intakes (teddy bears ears) the later ones are longer.

As you have access to a 1/1 scale aircraft you probably already knew:hmmm::D. Keep up the ,

good work,

Bob

Cheers Bob. I know about those and they'll be done way down the line. But really thanks for mentioning it:clap2:. I've interpreted the cut away drawings so with you and DB being Hawk hands on, please don't look too hard as it may be a bit inaccurate.

Hi Steve, I am only an average modeller and I admire and aspire modellers like your good self. At 66 and advancing, I tend to model in 1/32 and 1/24 due to "fat fingers" and ageing eyesight.

If it looks right then I am happy. :D

Now lets see this model take off (pun intended )

A little progress this morning. That rear end. As you can see on the sprue, Revell give you types of rear end alas the rear profile still needs adjusting. As mentioned previously the height is wrong and the they fit the tapered rear end. So doing the maths the height of the "blank" converted to 1/32 scale is 7.8mm. I've tried to achieve 8mm. I used the panel on the sprue as a template for the radius around the exhaust and added 2mm, as can be seen by the white plasticard. Then I released I hadn't accounted for the thickness of the upper part of the kit plastic "flap". So I adjusted the white card accordingly as it looks right now. Then I had a eureka moment. I was planning on filling the fitted white plasticard when glued in. Then I thought the plastic feels the same thickness (calibrated finger tips). So I cut the side out of the unused cockpit side and shaped that to the now white template. It fitted in quite well and is now glued in. Because I've raised the area behind the fin to the correct profile there is an overhang of plastic above the new panel. I'll sand this away once the glues gone off. Lastly I put a couple of plasticard backing where the sides have been cut, so when I put filler in it doesn't fall in.

Next the wing fences.....

Thanks for looking.

Would anyone want the now redundant white template?

Looking and learning. Will be buying the new edition and building an old one this year: you've given me the courage to deal with the red styrene.

Equally photography is my weakest skill. So as I walk amongst some of the gods of 1/32 scale modelling here we go.

I am enjoying being a spectator and taking notes for the next time I tackle one of these kits. It looks like great progress so far.

They are not gods of 1/32 scale modelling. They are just very naughty boys, and we walk amongst them.

This week's update - wing fences. The kit supplied parts are actually quite accurate in shape, not requiring any shape change. But they are too thick by a country mile. So I used the kit part and traced it out against 10thou plasticard. The real fences measure in at 10cm tall and 3mm wide. So scaled down to 1/32 that's 0.31mm and 0.09mm. In my mind 10thou (0.25mm) will do. Looking at the real aircraft standing at the nose looking aft, they are not visual until you see from a slight angle.

So I filled in the trough where the kit part goes with the same plasticard. This was then blended in. The kit part has the strengthening plate and again this is absolutely fine in width and shape. So I've glued the fence up against the kit strengthening strip. There is a small weld seam joining the 2 which I'll use perfect plastic filler for this as it's washed away and easy to manipulate.

Lastly the rear end filled and smoothed. I see on the photo a little gouge which is hard to see by eye (or mine!). So I'll address that. Just a bit of tidying up on the wing leading edge joins and added a radius to the ailerons as the kits are hard edged.

Next is the airbrake area and in particular the strengthening plates.

Hi Steve, Just a small observation, there appears to be 7 vortex generators in the photo, 4 inboard of the wing fence and 3 out board. There should be 4 either side.

Tail end is looking good.:clap2:

Thanks Bob. I'll be honest I didn't even check these, having only thinned them yesterday afternoon:doh:.  That's this mornings job.

A little request on your travels if the opportunity presents itself. Could you grab a photo of the Avionics bay underneath the cockpit with the side hinged panel. I've exhausted all my books and there is nothing on the internet.

Steve,

There is nothing online for this area (which is not surprising, so if you are lucky, Bob might be able to provide something (I could, but am not allowed to). In essence, the area underneath the cockpit floors is the electrical distribution and equipment bay area, where the two aircraft batteries are also stored. On RAFAT aircraft (as Bob will attest to), they also use this area as a personal equipment stowage area - the they have a special shaped container which holds their personal belongings which fits into the space). Later Hawk aircraft also feature a drop-down tray in this area which contains avionic equipment.

In the meantime, some useful details here:

Cheers Derek. It's my intension to have the side hinged panel opened. However I doubt you'll see a thing unless I roll the kit over. I had resigned myself to this. If it doesn't happen then so be it. I've got one photo in the Hawk sales brochure, which is similar to the above, but any contribution is very welcome thank you.

Hi again Steve, like Derek I too am not allowed to take photo's on aircraft that I am currently working on. As Derek said, until recently that area was crammed with avionics kit (all black Hawks were in the process of using the equipment bay being modified with an upgrade which meant that the personal pannier could no longer be fitted). The Reds still needed this bay for personal use. The pannier carried personal items in the event of landing away from base. The current Hawk T1 (Red Arrows) are having this important upgrade located else where, leaving the bay able to carry the pannier. This bay when not carrying the pannier, is largely an empty void with the Batteries (x2 side by side) only partially exposed to the rear of the bay and the forward area has black boxes of various shapes forward of the void. The cutaway drawing shows the void below the rear cockpit. The shape of this void being the shape of the pannier only slightly smaller. The hinged panel is 113A and can be removed to ease maintenance. Hope this helps, I or Derek? will let you know if you are close if you decide to detail this area. If Airfix ever decide to do one in 1/24 (please Dale :please: )  I may even attempt to improve (if needed) this area and others.

Bob

sorry for the long winded reply

Thanks to Bob this has now been added. It transpires also that a panel line is also wrong whilst I was looking!. So I filled in the wrong panel line (in white) and described it into its correct location. I found an excellent photo on the Web (linked) and pointed out by the arrow. So once it's had time to dry ill trim the plasticard to a better shape mirroring the kit parts.
