Hi folks. I'm not one for doing WiP's and having previously done 2 with positive and corrective comments received along the way. I'm quite peculiar in my modelling and very narrow minded, building something that's dear to my heart. So having finished the Op Granby Tornado a few months ago I wanted to start one of 2 Hawks I have in the stash. I'm modelled most of my life, only taking a break when children arrived. However I really wanted to push myself into this one and again be different. So I have a photo of an ETPS Hawk in maintenance on jacks at Boscombe Down in the mid-eighties. I'd worked there straight out of college and was present whilst they were filming the "Test Pilot" series. Growing up next to BD I suppose it was inevitable I'd fall into aviation. So having exchanged a couple of messages with Guy, I'm belatedly putting up some photos of where I am. I am a naturally slow modeller and quite messy getting there. Equally photography is my weakest skill. So as I walk amongst some of the gods of 1/32 scale modelling here we go.

Yesterday I went to the BDAC Museum and got the tape measure out and started measuring and photographing what I needed.

I wanted to open up the Avionics bay in the nose and the panel behind the cockpit. Some panels have been opened up on the side of the fuselage and I've added business to the small aperture. The opened area behind the cockpit I managed to find some photos but also a little artistic licence interpreting the cutaway diagrams etc..

As you can see I've used the CMK cockpit and wheel wells. I suspect these are scaled up from a small scale as nothing fits and the instructions ask you to remove bits of the kit that aren't present on the 1/32 kit. The main gear wells as you can see way too tall. Both the kit and the resin have been thinned to almost see through along with the nose area to. But it's now all in. I've ordered the Archer rivets last night, so another first for me. I've removed the flaps and thinned the wing trailing edge down ready for the CMK flap set.

Thanks for looking. If you see anything that's wrong please pipe up.

Steve

Nice start to a build I will definitely look forward to seeing the end result. I do like your two “helpers” in the photos. I’m a dog lover and the close up of your dog in your lap is perfect.  What are their names?

Hi Steve.

Good to see you take the plunge and share your Hawk with us.

Excellent progress so far.

I like your concept and look forward to your next update.

That red plastic doesn’t “look” very good to model with Steve, what’s it actually like?

It's not that bad actually. Dremel is obviously king all day long. But I've managed to slice slithers away with a sharpe scalpel.

The Labrador is Sullivan (3) & the Cocker Spaniel is Bailey (just over 1). Both keen to get involved and never far away when I'm sat down. I was wondering if I could use Sullivans hair as a wiring loom:hmmm:

Only a little progress this week as loads going at home. I thinned down the inner face of the upper side of the wing. In her now goes the CMK insert which will make a box section for where the flaps would retract into. They took some fettling to get in and I had to razor saw away a fair bit of the vertical section, so as not to widen the height of the gap. The wing was now a bit wavey as it quite thin. Having glued the resin in I then filled the the tiny gap between the plastic and the resin. I don't think you'll see much anyway unless the model is flipped over.

Secondly the tailplane is together and the trailing edge is far too thick. So I tried the scissor method to remove material and start a bit of a taper. This was quite effective and very quick to do. It's now got a lovely sharp trailing edge. I polished it off with 400 & 600 sanding stick.

No photo, but I've gone over the kit sanding all those applied filler splats and it looks clean and presentable (honest).

Great work so far Steve, well done.

:goodjob:

The Hawk is an aircraft close to my heart as well, having over 38 years of experience of the type and still involved with it today!

I look forward to seeing how your models turn out, good luck!

Scissor method?:hmmm:

Could you elaborate please?

Hi Guy. I thought of this whilst working away and it just came to me. It might already be a thing, but I was unaware if it is. So from the photo you can set the angle with the bit you want to thin near the ends of the scissors. Or put it closer to the handle for a wider angle. I started at the wider angle and slowly brought it to the tip going along the trailing edge. This shaves the plastic away until you removed the meat of it. Lastly going it with a sanding stick and it worked!. Ive got a patent pending as it think I could sell scissors as a thinning tool and I'd be a millionaire.

Hi, like Derek I too have an affiliation with the Hawk with close to 42 years on type. Posted to R.A.F. Scampton Jan 83, 3 months before the Reds arrived and spending Some of that time at R.A.F. Chivenor gaining experience on the aircraft. Worked with Derek, he a squipper ( and a brilliant modeler) and I a hairy ars*d rigger.I am now working on Black to Red conversions at Valley (can't afford to retire:(). Looking forward to seeing your effort coming to fruition.

All the best,

Bob
