I have had people try to get me to walk away from the Red Mal but I like it for what you mentioned. The finish let's say the shine could be just a touch better I think the issue was I used a fine tip in the end as opposed to a higher volume(another airbrush) the lacquer was drying too  fast:hmmm:

Mal I am not big in acrylics but I find that using the Tamia Semi-Gloss to be the hardest base as of yet to paint over works most excellente. ;)

Allright, i see, Tamiya, i use em alot, mainly, but when i mix, yes heavy diluted and with retarder (all the time) improves flow and yes finnish, many coats, instead of few that covers, the boat i build look at the hull, its Tamiya with retarder, it gets more a satin finnish then flat,

forgot to mention, if tiny cloth fibre lands on the model when doin diluted coats, stop, let dry, then easily removed with a soft brush (let it dry first) and you get error free surface without fibres on the coat.

btw i dont like flat at all.... not even on aircraft, semigloss.

but thats preferences.

Still like your result as i like it alot.

I know Japanese had a somewhat a semi-gloss finish but it depends on the AC being modeled for me with weathering if that happens.I luv to model japanese ships currently doing the 1/200 Scharnhorst been a few going now since any work. This the IJN Chickuma  rigging the more the better and German and the IJN liked rigging.

No!  It looks great, most realistic, any more would be too shiny imo.  :goodjob: Great model from a great kit (which I built myself many years ago).
