Funny enough I had the same experience... I also needed the fit-to-fly-slip and the local flight-medic didn't want to sign it... A big fat cow that probably was jalous of anybody else hopping in the back-seat were she wouldn't fit in a million years. However, there are ways around it as I found out...   :coolio:

Oh well, since Leon doesn't mind me sharing the story, I'll see if I can find some time to climb into my poet-tree. All I can say for now is: "Stay tuned".

Kind regards,

Rudy.

I did some more work. The seats are finished. They look real nice painted up and fit fine. The seat angle exactly matches that of the cockpit bulkheads.

I started on the landing gear. Quite some cleanup needed, but not too much to bare. The Reskit wheels are fantastic as always. I opted for light grey (SEA) for the gear and hubs. I absolutely love MRP paints but I *do* wish they would return to their older glass bottles. The new plastic ones are a bit opaque and one can no longer compare or determine colors by holding them next to something. You have to open the bottle and eyeball it....sadly.

The wheel wells are sparsely detailed but with some weathering they'll look okay. Light Gull Grey used this time.

The cockpit is also nearing completion. Closed up it will look just fine. It looks like I was a bit too heavy with the weathering, but we'll see.

I also ordered Reskit's replacement vortex-generators. I don't know why I am doing this to myself....my poor eyes. Some repositioning of the wing strakes is also involved. You get nice self-adhesive templates for easier placement.

More to come..

Reskit's wheels come with new brake disks. I have forgotten to remove the moulded-on ones, which I have corrected now. Still some sanding to do to get a smoother result.

The fuselage is glued together now, the turtleback is for now only glued to the back-end. When that has dried thouroughly I will tackle the sides. If I did all at once steps would form. This way there's less filling and sanding to do. I really came to re-appreciate the sleek lines of the T.2 while working on this kit. I find it aesthetically pleasing.

The cockpit is finished.

And after painting the area around the cockpit and some cleanup (not exactly needed at this stage, just a thing with me).

I have been testing some colors, but I'm not yet happy, at all. I have mixed some Light Slate Grey with white and will see if that looks better than this. For the tan I will switch to Saudi sand. (below shows straight sand with straight Light Slat Grey). Also still looking for the right darker green...

Looking good Leon. It'll be worth the time to get the colours right, since that's what makes the Omani Hawk so appealing. The vortex generators look like they might take some time too... good luck!

Looks good Leon, I got one of these cheap on ebay recently so good to see what I'm getting into.

Tip with the MRP bottles, paint the lids when you've got some paint left in your airbrush. Makes it really easy to compare colour or reference it. I tend to use a sharpie and put the number on top as well.

Thanks Max! For sure picking / mixing the the colors are going to make or break this one.

That is a fantastic tip! Thanks for making me smart. I did paint squares of each of the metal paints on plastic card for easy picking, but this is way easier.

I am going to order these and see how the match up eye-to-eye. I have the Saudi sand and it does look okay, but I want to compare it to 226. As always judging from photos is hard, and I have a lot of photos in different lighting conitions, but this photo appears to be the most natural in terms of lighting.

Very nice work, an Australian called Ryan Hamilton produced a number of resin sets for the kit, you could post a request here, and other forums, think they were quite rare, Eric Galliers also produced some sets, again very rare.

Now come the times of filling and sanding. I've glued evergreen rods into the intake gaps and sanded them smooth, which will be followed by putty and more sanding.

I have glued in the windscreen with the aim to maximize alignment to minimize steps, and not mind the seams too much. Filled in and sanded it looks okay. More polishing to do here.

The wing assembly did not fit very well and quite some sanding was needed to make it better, quite some flash too. I am still debating if I should attack the vortex generators now vs when the wings are attached. That means choosing between protection of the delicate parts vs ease of access. It seems wise to remove the kit ones now and to add Reskit's last, just before paining.

Wing to fuselage fit is not great, but fixable.

Gluing the turtle back in three stages paid off, the are very minimal steps and almost no gaps. With some minimal sanding it became smooth quickly. The exhaust is not yet glued, that's why its mis-aligned.

I was having trouble finding images of the topside camouflage pattern. The mail I sent about that to the Omani DoD was left un-answered. I found that Air-Graphics Models makes a decal set in 1/72 which includes and Oman Hawk 166. I wrote them an email and asked if they would be inclined to send me a scan of the instruction sheet for the 166, because the images I found of it online were very small.

Gary of Air-graphic Models promptly sent me a nice clear PDF of it! So, my problems in this respect are over. Comparing this to the photos I have tells me they did their homework, too. Thanks Gary!  Update: the lower surfaces are in fact in a different grey, not the same as the upper grey.

Excellent work Leon - I am glad that you found a good colour scheme guide, well done!

Just one minor point of observation? As far as I am aware, all Hawk aircraft feature gloss white wheel bay interiors (although the insides of the doors are often gloss light aircraft grey).

Regards

Thanks Derek. You are absolutely right it would appear. I found this walkaround of an Australian one, they're clearly white! I can and will fix that, thanks for sharing your observation! And the door insides on the 166's are light grey indeed.

If it helps there's some fantastic walk-around photos here.

Thanks for that Steve, it will be most helpful, there are many similarities between the two types!
