I just pulled the wrapper off this thing this morning. I usually don't build car models having been an auto mechanic for 40 years. In any case it was gonna be a "barn find" with rust and bad paint but that takes work so, basically out of the box (yup we all know how that works) I'm thinking it needs plug wires at least...This detailing crap just never ends.

Oh well at least I have an intimate working knowledge of this topic, not like say a jet fighter.

This will not be the hemi engine race car

the chrome wheels gotta go (most of the chrome's gotta go)

he 440 CID RB (raised block) engine

beginning with semi gloss black, forgot how much stuff was black on these old buggers

I went with bare iron/ rusty exhaust manifolds, the kit comes with headers but I remember the headers these engines used and that aint them

going by the diff cover it's either a Chrysler 9 1/4 sure grip or Dana 44-60 series

And that's all I've got for tonight

Thanks for looking

A couple of little things...so far

The alternator bracket is backwards, if mounted as is would have the bracket in the air, not attached to the water pump through bolts

XOoLun9.jpg

I sawed it off, turned it around and now I'm a little happier with it...now the power steering pump is way too high

sawed that off and relocated it as well

and that's my update for today

Still making headway on the old dodge

First off the distributor is too long, the shaft was shortened a bit

p0n4NVZ.jpg

we used to fit the exhaust manifold gaskets with heat shields to protect the valve covers/ gaskets from the extreme heat of the manifolds (they'd bake rock hard, shrink and leak like mad)

Plug wires installed. I'll admit I've got a couple of wires crossed and they should be orange

That's all for tonight

interior components got a splash of color...well, if black is a color (more like all the colors?) with a bit of wood and some chrome

There are a few shades of black here but difficult to distinguish the variations

I forgot about all the ash trays in these cars  I guess smoking was a lot more accepted back then, I never smoked...(cigarettes) but I always had full ash trays in my cars.

There is a chrome surround on the service pedals (Molotow pen)

The intermediate shaft for the steering column is massively oversize and due to be replaced by the black painted evergreen rod shown here

work (such as it is) continues

It is indeed a good kit, I think Revell did their due diligence here.

I gave it a quick splash of Mr Color lacquer #3 Gloss red....It's just an observation/ opinion many modellers do a beautiful paint job on their models and they look great...but not realistic. The real cars were painted with enamel paint, the fit and finish on the real ones was...iffy. I've seen cars of this vintage rebuilt/ restored and painted with the modern base clear and in that case replicating a model with the high gloss is correct, not for the original release

with that in mind I will not be polishing the paint and or gloss coating it. I'll wax it but that's where it ends

and I've finished a rebuild/ rewire of this machine today. new tires are in the works so I didn't worry about the overspray

Wet sanded to knock the shine down then waxed to try getting that "vintage" paint look;

lead foil seat belts, nobody ever wore these things back in the day but they were there if needed

UV  cure resin for instrument panel lenses

and a punched disc of .010 painted silver for the dimmer switch...a little ocd for ya

The fun...such as it is

Another boring update;

Unlike a modern Dodge Charger with multiplex CAN bus communication lines, this dinosaur used real copper wire wrapped in what we called hockey tape, black cloth tape that soon after construction lost any structural integrity and turned to frayed black powder loosely attached to a wiring harness. In any case, I'll be adding a harness of sorts made from left over wiring from land line phone cable

lquLNdM.jpg

stripping the wire in progress here

the kit windshield will need outsourcing...may have to call SAFLIGHT?

The vent windows (all the windows actually) are fairly thick and show distortions

I zoomed in here to show the distortion, it doesn't look too bad from a distance

5FSdpX6.jpg

I decided to make new windows, I'll be using acetate sheet (here a surplus blister pack top from a sanding stick)
