Ambaryerno
I have a number of WWII kits on my shelf that that I plan to get to building one day, most of which are painted. One thing I'd like to do, especially on my Corsair, is to paint the metal parts with metalizer, and then actually use paint chipping to get spots of primer showing through the final paint, and bare metal under the primer. However, I had another thought: Has anyone ever tried doing something like this using Bare Metal Foil? I've done a little research since I've never used Foil before (I may do it on my P-51D) and know I can't mask the it since the foil will pull off with the mask. However, what about using the hairspray method? For my Corsair especially I plan on using stencils rather than decals (I have one of the full sets that covers all placards, national insignia, etc.). If I lay down foil as a base layer and paint over it with chromate and the final camo color would this help keep the masks from pulling off the foil? How would the foil react to the spray and brushing to create the chips? BiggTim
BiggTim
Never done that, but I have wondered about it. I've always used the metal paint method like you mentioned, with good results. I'm not sure I would wan to spend the time to foil something that was going to cover up, to be honest.
geedubelyer
Interesting question that I've often pondered. I can see no reason why this cannot be achieved. Where the danger lies is keeping paint on areas that you don't want chipped as you handle the airframe for subsequent procedures. I believe @JayW has experience in this endeavour so it might be worth dropping him a line? Here's his build thread. He chipped the paint on his Corsair if I remember correctly. Please let us know what you do and how it turns out. Many may follow suit since the effect could prove highly realistic looking. Good luck Cheers, Guy Edited June 18 by geedubelyer BiggTim

That's the big question: Even if it DOES work, would it even be worth it to take the time even if it's going to end up covered? I guess a lot would depend on the final results. Yup I have (a little late to this party as usual for me) on an old 1/35 Bell 47 my reference pictures showed the rotor blades missing paint nearly 1/2 chord and 1/3 or so span so on a whim I bare metal foiled the main and tail rotors, then with Tamiya acrylics, painted the rotors “zinc chromate” primer green and then semi gloss black over that then, using a Tamiya sanding sponge, very gently sanded through from the rotor leading edge back and towards the rotor hub. The effect was (just my opinion) quite good. ill see if I still have that beast around here somewhere yup, found it, not the best pics but hopefully gives the idea Edited August 5 by chrish add pic themongoose, SwissFighters and Shoggz
Ambaryerno
Interesting, did you do any other prep work for this, IE using the hairspray method? Or did you just sand it straight off? Edited September 21 by Ambaryerno
Neo
Its very doable. Foil sounds intimidating but its actually very easy when you get the right tricks Ive done many foiled builds. My last one is a cf-104 I also did a mig 15 where i did salt weathering, and chipping. I can post some pics if you interested. Essentially your painting over metal vs plastic. The main thing to remember is that paint with not Bite the same. I only use laquers and enamels, maybe acrylics will have more issue to grip
Neo
So just realized that I completely forgot to post the RFI for the MIg Here is the link you can see all the chipping and weathering on top of foil
