WNW Sopwith Camel "BR"

The decals for the white striping did not work well at all.  They either did not conform well, even after I tired various decal softeners, the blow dryer and the hot washcloth trick; or they did not adhere in areas.  I ended up stripping them off and I am in the process of masking off the areas on the fuselage, center of the upper wing and the tail prior to airbrushing white.

Masking the frontal area of the fuselage was tricky due to the curvatures and I am keeping my fingers crossed this turns out.

I should be able to post the finished look later today unless disaster strikes that is!

The end result was pretty decent.  There is only a tiny spot on the right side of the fuselage that I need to touch up due to paint running under the tape.  Masking the curves on the tail and the center part of the upper wing was a pretty tense time and I am both a bit surprised and pretty happy that task turned out well.  Once the paint cures overnight I plan to decal that fuselage (keeping my fingers crossed those behave) and then continue with the construction.

The left side turned out solid.

While the right side had that tiny run a mentioned above.  This was the result of my respraying the blue to thin the white stripe very slightly as I thought it was too

wide.

These two parts turned out well, though I did manage to nick the white on the upper wing section.

Hi Ernest,

I am impressed with the blue and white striping: that has come out really well.  I think you were very brave to paint white over dark blue but the opacity of the paint seems to have worked out very well!

Great progress!

Kind regards,

Paul

Apparently it is easy to type an ‘s’ when a ‘w’ was intended…

I’ve never tried painting with Shite Ernest, what’s the technique?  Seriously though, some top quality work going on here, she’s going to be a real Bobby-dazzler!

Wow - the distance between S and W on the keyboard has never looked shorter…

It reminds me of a colleague who used to type ‘Regards’ at the end of every email except one time when he sent us all a particularly snippy missive which was signed off ‘Retards’ (note where ‘g’ and ‘t’ are on your keyboards folks…)

:D

Kind regards

Paul

The build continues at my usual summertime plodding pace.  The decaling on the fuselage is done and it has been gloss then matt coated.  I tried to get a slightly satin look on the metal areas and a somewhat flatter effect on the areas covered by canvas.  I have also finished painting the wings and plan to gloss coat them prior to adding the decals on the wings.

The combination of the white painted areas and the decals turned out better than I thought they would.  It took several applications of decal softener to get them to conform to the raised detail areas but I got there in the end.  You should be able to see the slight difference in sheen between the primarly metal painted areas and the canvas covered ones.  This is turning out to be a pretty cool paint scheme.

The rudder decals were bears to get to lay down properly and I still need to fix a small spot, but overall it looks ok.  I sprayed this part untill it was almost dead flat.

I tried out a slightly different painting technique on the two outer wing parts for the top wing in an effort to add some contrast to the PC10 color.  I first airbrushed two light coats onto a black primed surface.  I then sprayed along the spars to give the surface diffrent shades to replicate the play of lights and shadows.  I think it is a decent point of departure for further weathering to (hopefully) add some interest to a rather mundane paint color.

Once I gloss coat the wings I'll decal them.  Once that is done, I plan to assemble the top wing and get the rigging lines placed on the bottom of the wing.  I forgot to mention above that I added some eyebolts in a few areas to ensure the rigging has a spot to firmly tie off on.  Nearly all the parts on this build have now been painted and I think general construction will be finished in a couple of weeks.

Ernest -  I like how you are giving variation to the PC10. I agree this is a really interesting paint scheme you have chosen and I’m looking forward to seeing it completed. YOu are doing a great job!

I completed painting and decaling the wings, got the upper wing assembled and gave both of them a matt coat.  I also finished the four outer supports.  There is very little remaining to be painted and I should finish basic assembly by the end of this weekend.  I still have a fair amount of work to do though, as I need to paint the pilot's head, and the entire mechanic; as well as weathering the aircraft itself.

The decals went down well, and look pretty decent.  I varied the intensity of the matt coat in an attempt to give the surfaces a bit more varience.   The top

wing went together well and the blue and white center portion does a nice job breaking up the monotone PC10.

As I said above, the decals conformed well and I managed to get them placed without any issues.  Under the matt coat they look painted on when viewed from

about a foot away.

The outer struts turned out well.  I primed them black, sprayed CDL Varient 1 (MRP) as a base color and then airbrushed 3-4 coats ofTamiya Transparent Orange

to give the parts a warm varnished wood look.  I used an artist's drawing pencil to add the darker lines before I sprayed the orange.

If I get some time at the bench tomorrow I should make some good progress on further assembly.
