We have progress! Sorry for the long delays between post its been a busy summer!

First up, fuselage progress, I have one side almost done foiling, and painted the fibreglass cover and the nose cone. I have to remodify and improve the fitment of the glare shield as it was preventing the windscreen from sitting just right. I sill need to fabricate the Hud glass as the kit one doesn't fit the black box correctly.

I know a lot of comments on this kit having oversized panel gaps and rivets, but for me, since i knew i was going to foil this kit from day one its a blessing!

I decided to try out something new also(my #1 rule of every build) ive colored some foil by boiling it with some egg shells and I'm replacing some panel one the tail.

here is the first one done

removed the pannel (also note the grey panel was painted over the foil)

And here is the new pannel

vs before

What do you think ?

the biggest downside for me is that I cannot grain or sand the imperfections out of the coloured panel as it removes the colouring.

I think I'm going todo a couple of simple panels like this but for the more complex ones i might just spray alclad over the foil

Till next time

Cheers

Hi Neo,

What brand and colour of red did you use for the wing tanks?

that looks amazing.  I'm really impressed that the clear coat does not harm the appearance of the foil.  Weathering looks really good, and ties together the foil and painted parts well.

Thank you. Yeah, this stuff is something like Future Polish but 50% better, AK mentions that it can be put over their metalizer without affecting the finish. I belive it

I hardly look into any jet build because it's simply not in my wheel house.  But damn nice!

Love it.  Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you so much, I'm touched I made you enjoy an internal propeller plane!

Neo, do you spray that AK Intermediate Gauzy neat out of the bottle, or do you thin it?  If the latter, with what?

Thanks

Was strait out the bottle its like water, use low psi and applied generously dries super fast. Anying thing is that when you stirr it hard it makes bubles so i let it sit in the cup for like a min

What can I say? Just spectacular!

And highly interesting on the use of foil and finishing techniques.

Thanks, Alain

I like the result quite a lot! I checked the whole topic, and yet I have a few questions just out of curiosity:

1) the big panel right at the front side of the aft fuselage section (next to the red separating line) - should it be darker like the rearmost panel (covering the nozzle)?

2) the panels that look like they are painted and not so shiny - are they what you call ''grain the panels'' with an abrasive sponge?

3) about the rivets - did you trace the original placement of the rivets on the plastic, or did you do new rivets? They are perfect in size but their spacing looks just a little bit on the big side...

4) and about the Gauzy agent - did you apply it under the decals as well, or just one coat over the decals?

Thx! Very nice WIP and congrats on the finished model!

There are a couple of things here to unwrap

  1. Yes I think to be accurate it should be a bit darker the pannel behind the red line that has the red and white light but i missed that detail unfortunately
  2. No I grained all the panels to give them a brushed metal-finished, the darker color is from boiling foil pieces with egg shells Ref here
  3. All the rivets are the OOB ones, i simply re-puched them with my riveting tool i did not feel like doing a full rivet job on this thing
  4. The gauzy Agent was only applied after decals, i did a test on my mule with a piece of foil, polished it applied spare decals then covered half with the Gauzy agent, then applied my wash and since the foil was so polished you could not see the carrier film, the wash made it stand out super bad vs invisible with the gauzy agent. The other interesting fact is that the tail was completed months before the rest and just sitting there the foil did oxidize a bit , this way I'm locking away the finish and tbh apart from the wash on my mule i can barely tell the difference between the two

Thanks for the great questions

glad you enjoyed the build
