  1. OK, the Hellcat is off to its new home and the bench is cleared for a commission build of a 1/32 HK Avro Lancaster Type 464 in Operation Chastise mode. Have to be honest, the box picture is more exciting than the opening of the box. The well documented poor HK packing was evident but everything was thankfully in one piece. Two nice instruction books, one for the standard MkI/III build and another with the special bits for the Dambuster build. Also a nice little extra a little book called "Rad Shutters Auto" by Stuart Reid, a former BBMF pilot. Nice little touch. The failings of this kit are well documented but, I love a challenge and it was the only option really. My client wanted a Dambuster aircraft and, of course, the Border model is a ferrari against a ford in their base state but there are no Border Lancs about at the moment and God knows when or if a 617 squadron one will come along. With lots of work, reshaping, scratch building, tons of research, ( I'm about 30 hours of research in already and still only sorting out cockpit layout, there's a brilliant kit to be built. The floor for the pilot's seat has to go, it's way too high and misshapen. Pilots seat is very poor but a resin one from Resin 2 Detail is in the post and the IP is frankly, disgusting for a £300+ kit. Thank the Lord for Peter and Airscale. Their IP arrived today and, as ever, it's superb. Also got one of his new branch out of seatbelts for the pilot's seat, they look more RB than HGW. I'll get that made up tomorrow. The eyes will suffer for that one! Spot the deliberate mistake BTW? I've gone and ordered the Sutton harness in 1/24 instead of 1/32 Still, it'll be fine for the new spitfire in the autumn So today, the horrid box construction that the pilots seat sits on has gone, I'll reuse some of it for height but it needs a total reshaping before that. The engineers panel has been filed smooth ready for the Airscale PE plate. I've removed the two little star shaped knobs first though for further use. Go in through the back with a ball cutter and they just pop out. Thanks to Nigel at Nigel's modelling bench for that one. Used it on the Hellcat too. I've made up the pilot's seat too just to get a feel for the fit and hardness of the plastic although I won't be using it. That's about it for now, got a trip to Lincoln at the weekend and maybe a detour to look at a Lancaster.........
  2. Well, it has been a long time since I posted a WIP here at LSP... So I thought this would be a good one to kick things off again with this... Some of you know who I am and my role at Wingnut Wings and with that, I was lucky enough to be one of the first people in the world to get to build the WNW Lancaster for its first appearance at Telford in 2018 (I think? It has been a while!) I cannot recall what test shot we were up to, maybe the fourth or fifth? But just building the kit with no paint took me well over a week doing a couple of hours each evening before Richard and I flew out for Telford. Well from then you all the history of what happened. To be honest I never thought this kit would see the day of light until Border Models got a hold of it. I am glad they did, as Bryan Wall (WNW Lancaster designer) and the others who worked on this poured their efforts into this over 10 years, and to think that it was never going to get released was heartbreaking. I know that it isn't completely packaged as it was intended to be released, but it is great to see its release even if it's only 95% complete/up to the WNW standard. I have picked up some aftermarket for the kit, but to be honest, you don't really need anything, bar maybe stencils as they are fully included on the Border Models decal sheet. I've heard good things about the 1manarmy stencils so I am looking forward to giving them a go. The brass barrels that have been supplied within the kit are rubbish due to no holes in the cooling jackets, so I have a set of the Master Models barrels that are intended for the HK Models kit, I am sure they will fit. And I picked up the Yahu Instrument panel, again for the HK Models Kit. Whether I will use this is a question I will get to later. I couldn't bring myself to drop cash on the Qunita Studios set. They look pretty good close up. For those that haven't picked Wing Leader books up as of yet for any subject, they are must-haves! They are well-written and have a bucketload of information within the pages. I also picked up a copy of Ton-Up Lancs, a great book for anyone thinking of doing a Lancaster that completed 100 missions. It contains thirty-five histories recorded in this book with stories and personal photographs from the aircrew that flew these aircraft As scheme-wise... I haven't chosen anything yet... I was thinking of Micky the Moocher, Phantom of the Ruhr or keeping a New Zealand connection with 75 Sqdn (RNZAF) Captains Fancy, but it seems like everyone in New Zealand that has the Border kit is doing this scheme. So I am still looking at my options currently! I am hoping to start on this in the next few days, but I need to set up a temporary modelling space as I am renovating my hobby room.
  3. Hi folk, For anyone modelling Spitfires and Lancasters there might be a video or two of interest here. Hth
  4. New release today. Hit the picture to go directly to the shop. Enjoy!
  5. Here are some pictures of the commotion and interest generated by Dave (phartycroc's) Lancaster. You should have seen it up-close. TERRIFIC work by Dave on this extremely quick build (five weeks?!?!). The LSP/SIG32 table was right next to WNW so lots of questions as to which Lancaster Dave built (WNW or HKM). I should have taken a few more pictures of the Lanc, but it was rare when there were not many folks around it. It was rumored, but not confirmed, that Dave got to sit down TWICE on Saturday. HUGE interest in his amazing build. Maru: Recognize anything? Dave was even showing off some of the smaller bit and I think he was personally responsible for about half of the sales of AirScale's own PE instrument panel for the Lanc (and yes, Airscale sold out of their PE IP stock, a month before the kit goes on sale! I think HKM has a hit on their hands. This is usually what Dave was faced with on Saturday: Ok, have to get ready for work tomorrow. Will keep posting during the week so stay tuned. Yes, I've already reserved my hotel room for next year's Telford! Chris
  6. Hi All: Just spent a terrific weekend with Dave (Phartycroc), Roy, Mike, Richard and other members of the LSP/Sig32 group here in the UK. MANY thanks to these very fine gentlemen for allowing me to jump into their terrific display and for the warm hospitality. Can't say enough good things about this weekend. EDIT: No dropbox link - sorry, but I've done two other Telford threads on the clubs and SIGs and the models themselves. Enjoy! Here are the terrific Trio: Roy, Mike and Dave And they even let me get a picture in too! The display from the group was AWESOME and we had a prime location right at the entrance, next to Wing Nut Wings, and directly across from the food area. I don't know who Roy paid to get that amazing slot but it was money well spent. LOTS of attention overall, not to mention Dave's phenomenal Lancaster which I'll post in a separate thread. Some of the model pics: I'm sorry for this, but I'm gushing all over this Typhoon. The Lancaster is amazing for sure, but lets not forget Mike's amazing piece of work. Can you count the coffee stirers that gave their lives for this display? Just an amazing amount of detail that defies the eye. Keep looking! You have to ask Mike where these figures came from - just amazing (ok, he got them from the Tamiya Rally Car mechanics set!) \ And a few more other pics. I have not done a lot of processing with these so I can get them up quickly: Loved these signs. IPMS Austria has a good sense of humor: More to come later. Check out the thread of Dave's Lancaster (my external pics, sorry!). Chris

  8. Oh how I wish I was there in the flesh, but alas I, and some of you have to live through the eyes, ears, noses, and standing on end hairs of the fortunate ones.... Posting these on the behalf of one of our own, who was there to smell the exhaust and feel the roar.....more to come over the next few days.....
  9. So at last weekend's Skyfest event at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, the museum painted different markings on their Mynarski Memorial Lancaster which featured shark mouths on all four engines. Does anyone here know the story behind these markings? They certainly give the plane a different look. Sorry for the photo quality but all I had was a small point and shoot camera. A close up on one of the engine cowlings: Carl
  10. I make no secret of the fact that I'm on the editorial staff over at another modelling site. Yesterday, I came home to find this in my staff mailbox: http://www.hk-models.de/p2_06.htm This ought to raise the excitement level a trifle
