  1. Hello ! We did another sitted mordern US Navy fighter pilot (post 2000), but hands on sticks this time. A bit more difficult to do, as the hands must be at the right place. Some had a sight at my "F-18 cockpit" in my mans cave... cheers Norbert
  2. Hi All - thought I’d resurrect these two from my BOD (Box Of Doom) I don’t have a Shelf. A quick - where I am - These two where separate presents on my 50th - a couple of years ago now They laid around in my stash for quite some time. Then chatting with my Sister one day we where reminiscing of when these where a brand new item on the shelves in the 70’s. I had been plaguing my Dad for months about it. So came around Christmas and there under the tree was a huge box. Baring in mind that we didn’t have lots of spare cash in them days and it wasn't a cheep kit! This was a massive thing for my parents to do for me. The other thing I remember about it was that because of the size and complexity of it - I was only 7 - my dad roped my big Sis into helping me. So we spent weeks both having fun putting it together and it still lives in my parents house to this day! The box shot Anyway enough of that. The upshot being I have these two kits so lets get um going - this is some two years ago. Did the usual tinternet searches found some amazing builds that gave me some pointers/insperation and started. But have to say not many seem to get made! The first task - ohhh and boy is it a task - fill the bullet hole sized rivet detail and the wired texture there is all over the main Fus, Wings etc. I’m sure it was there but don’t remember it being there on from my boyhood experience. Then didn’t pay much attention those days. Sure I was like everyone else it was buy, stick, paint, stickers and hang it on the ceiling by tea time. The first one (RAF) tried to use the car filler paint - it was ok just the paint spray and time! The other (US) one took a different approach with using some waterd down milliput. A bit like making a slip from clay, painted that over with a big old brush. This method worked a lot better and quicker for me. This is an horrible task - trust me - So do a bit then do something else then a bit more. still loads of sink makes and bits to fill - but it is an old mould So in-between the constant rubbing back. I started the look at the next big thing, the air intakes. These are very prominent on the harrier and hard to miss. This is where the moulds are really showing their age as the detail on the intake doors is very soft now. I was always going to attempt to do something here - kind of a make or break on them both - so out with pencils tape and measure implements started the slice and dice. Firstly there is know way I was going to make this 100% accurate. Way beyond my skills. I was more after an improvement and more representative of the real thing. With a tape template draw in and marked the doors then chop out. Hindsight and all that and a recommendation. Just cut the whole back off. Then the doors rather than hollowing them out like I did. Just cut them - lot faster, lot easier to cut, could actually hinge if you wanted too and easier to do the final repair as this will all have to be blended into the fuselage. Chopped and blending in the splines and walls. This has a more curved shape in the real thing just working and improving what is in the kit Doors cut out and slight curve apply to the front edge Little brass tool made for the little nicks on each door All the doors in - I bagged these all up when I finally ran out of steam 2 years ago so hopefully there is still a full set for each Then Gun pods - Started with a purchase from a few years ago at Telford - now to cut some lengths of Brass tubes Once again this is more of a detail enhancement of the kit parts than a 100% accurate. Cut and opened up the pod ready to drill out and apply the gun cover. Then the ejection chute was opened up and reshaped. all looks a bit to square on the kit piece. there is some kind of slightly covered hole on the side which isn’t depicted so that got cut out and filled. Next there are some backward facing vents on the bottom. I made a template for these and formed some thin aluminium foil over it to make them. couple of holes and panels added and that was that. My tester done The gun cone needs to be blended in as there is no seam line as the kit depicts. Just needed to rinse and repeat three more times A spray of aluminium paint from a rattle can to show any defects that need correcting - more sanding! Final line up So this is as far as I got before I lost the will to sand anymore so hopefully my next update will be some new stuff! Any help or pointer welcome. Especially on the US one as my knowledge is very sketch for them. till next time. Happy modelling and stay safe!!! Taff
  3. I feel I’m on a roll at the moment so the above kit has come down from the high shelf stash. I’ve no shelf of doom builds or almost finished builds to get done. It was a coin flip between the Harrier, or an A-10. Both come with fairly poor rep’s, but I’m ready to give them a fair crack of the whip to create a couple of good lookers. To the Harrier first, I’m utilising some Wolfpack-D Extras. Cockpit, external parts, and using the model alliance decal sheets for ZD433 of No1 Squadron. I’ll be adding some AM weaponry too, later down the line. I know about the poor shapes of the nose, and won’t be correcting them. I’m simply not that good a modeller. I tend to make do with what I have at hand in terms of plastic. If it looks like a Harrier at the end, is good enough for me. All that said, I’ve made a start on trimming and dry fitting the office into the nose section. That’s nearly done. So I set about the canopy, polishing the seam from the outside, and sanding polishing the dry’ cord from inside. I’ve had a go at making my own from wire, using a drawn template. Not bad for a first go, but improvements needed for subsequent attempts. The only problem now is that during the lengthy polishing session, I’ve cracked the canopy a little. I’m gonna see if a dip in future and adding the new det’ cord will distract the eyes from the crack. If not, I’ll source another from somewhere.
  4. Waiting for some parts for F-16, I decided to reanimate project which was started some time ago. Actually I was suprised when I checked tho initial photo dates: December 2013. I've put this model to box for a while and almost 7 years passed, so I think it would be nice to finish it. First some photos takes in other era: . . . . Mostly out of the box with only Aires cockpit and some bombs/missiles. But first thing first - engine. Nice, but won't be visible at all, so it was time to play with some Alclads: . . And fitted: Next adding more parts: . . . I can't recall why I did all the bombs, missiles and everything what was in the box but there is a lot of this. Harrier has take only few of them, but it would be pity not to have so more option then simple fuel tanks, Mavericks and Sidewinders. I decided to do much more: 2x AIM-9L Sidewinder 2x Mk.117 2x AGM-65E Maverick (Eduard) 3x Mk.83 regular fin 2x Mk.82 Snakeye 6x BSU-49 + 2x TER 2x GBU-12 2x Mk.77 (Aerobonus) + 1xTER (Eduard) 2x Fuel Tanks 1x AN/AAQ-25 Thank you for watching. New update soon...
  5. Afternoon folks Here's Airfix's classic Harrier GR3 from the venerable 1/24th scale kit, warts and all. Built as it comes, but with some home-made additions to the cockpit and seat. The kit decals and Xtracolour paints were used throughout. For its age, it's a really nice kit. The cockpit is very basic and the landing gear and bays are lacking in details, but with some good old-fashioned scratch-building you can make a decent representation of the Harrier. Happy modelling! Tom
  6. Hey everyone! I thought you'd like to see what I'm working on at the moment, a 1:24 Harrier T.4. This is a conversion that I've wanted to complete for over 30 years and so now I've decided to have a go. In essence it's an almost complete reworking of the 40 year old Airfix Harrier GR.1 into the two seat T.4 and so I have to build a new nose, scratchbuild the cockpits and then build an entirely new tail section - as well as a complete redetail of the remaining airframe and features. I've given myself around 5 months to complete this model, so here's hoping I can! Though I'd love to detail it all on here, there's just too much information and too many pictures, so if you'd like to keep up with what's likely to be a very involved conversion, please follow the link and you'll find plenty more information! I'll also keep dropping some teasers onto here as well.. https://thekitbox.wordpress.com/2016/06/28/harrier-t-4-conversion-part-2/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfQeFAMdUVY
  7. Hi folks I've finished this one today and I'm glad it's done as it's been a fight all the way. I purchased the 1/32 Revell GR.1 for £10 with a view to make a T2 but alas it didn't work out. I'm told the kit was a P1127 so couldn't be a GR.1. So some research and P1127(RAF) it was. I used the Tim McLelland Harrier book as reference; so to summarise the cockpit was built up, the airbrake was rebuilt, the wing leading edge at the root has been reprofiled (no saw tooth), the fillet in front of the forward exhaust has been reprofiled. The housing aft of the rudder has been extended with the grubbing added for the parachute. Aftermarket stuff was the Quickboost Lightning seat but modified the head box accordingly, the nose probe was actually a 1/24 Master Model pitot tube for a Sea Harrier!. Painted using alclad paints and weathered with various Tamiya pastels. The biggest disappointment for me is the way the intake doors turned out, could have done better....... Please chip in if you see I've done something incorrect. Steve.
  8. Guys, I would like to present you the new model that I have start building this week - the gorgeous Harrier in 1/48 by Eduard. The Striking Eagle is not forgotten, but this Harrier is a special endeavor with Mitko from DN-Models to make something extraordinary together. So I will have to postpone the Eagle for a while, and make some "motions" with the Harrier. Only the inbox review is done, and some parts of the cockpit, but there will be a thorough WIP theme in the DN Models blog when is ready. The Harrier for me was something rather unknown, but it turned out a very interesting plane. I plan to build the GR.9A version with plenty of magnets and moving parts... Check out the inbox review, hope you like it. Thx!
  9. Hi hi, it`s been a big airbrake with the Eagle, but I was dealing with the Harrier. Well, I may become famous, but this Harrier became something like my best model so far. It`s not finished yet - just the decals are attached today. There will be a full video review of the build on the Mitko`s youtube channel and check out what a trailer he did about this model: There will be a full build review on the DNmodels blog, so check it out when you can. So far I could only share a couple of photos from today - the decals are on and a thin coat of lacquer. That`s it for now. Btw, I plan to use oil paints for the weathering for the first time and with the help from the local IPMS club - the oil paints should do miracles for the weathering. So... the Harrier GR.9A ZG478, with the huge Lorraine Cross on the tail: It`s an interesting plane. Honestly, I had only some basic knowledge about this plane and it is not one of my most favorite planes (even the US Harrier), but during this build I kinda found its beauty. Yeah, it`s a beautiful plane. Almost forgot to mention ... it is something like 3 models in one - I mean 3 different displays out of this model - just about everything turns, rotates, etc., to transform it from a parked jet, through the VTOL mode, to a fast flying plane... there is a sneak peak in the trailer.
  10. Hi, I postponed for a long time an order of Phoenix decals and finally decided to have a go. As they are very rarely mentioned on LSP, I thought you would be interested in having a feedback. I ordered them via Hobbyeasy and got them in less than two weeks as the letter went under the customs radar. First important thing: if you know Tiger Wings, you will not be surprised as they are the producer hidden behind this more recent name! To decrease the P&P and because the cost was quite reasonable, I ordered six decal sets from Taiwan: The three USMC AV-8B/B+ sets, the AVG P-40 set, the Tomcat VF-1 set and the 2013 TAC meet F-15J set. Result: I cannot tell you how they behave when you use them but at least I had a close look at the sheets and instructions. In fact, the value for money is even better than I thought as each set gives A LOT of schemes in a single set! Moreover, as Tiger Wings used to do, they also give very extensive stenciling for a minimum or two or three planes! To give you some specific examples: - The F-15J set gives four schemes on the equivalent of... FIVE A4 pages of decals with stenciling including individual panel number and the grey background for at least three Eagles! Each scheme has full tail art. - AV-8B VMA-231 & 311 sets cover at least a dozen of full schemes with stencils for a minimum of at least two planes (including all panel numbers). VMA-223 has "only" seven schemes but gives a better mix of color schemes as the other sets mainly focus on the late, darker Harrier colors. A very large majority are AV-8B+ ones. There is a nice mix of grey birds and colored ones including various sharkmouth & anniversary schemes. - The P-40 B/E set includes... 17 different sharkmouth schemes covering all AVG squadrons (15B & 2E)! - The Tomcat is a more standard set as it only gives two VF-1 early block planes. Topics are interesting and most of them have not been covered by other decal companies. I did not make a thorough assessment of all of them but they look quite good with regard to accuracy. Each paper sheet is crammed with decals. The printing quality is very good and comparable to the one of western producers. The instruction sheets are also quite good. They are printed in color on A4 gloss paper and give a clear view of the position of each element. Except for the smaller Tomcat set, each set has six full pages of instructions. Minimum information is given per scheme (location/year) but they could be more exhaustive. Some pictures of the actual plane are generally included but unfortunately, they are often too small to be very useful. However, on some sheets such as the Harrier ones, web links used as reference are given. Last, color references are Gunze ones. By default, I would have preferred Federal Standard references. Final conclusion: It is a pity Asian decals producers such as Phoenix or Siam decals are not better known and distributed as most of their large scale productions have an excellent quality level. If one aspect may be improved a little bit, it is the instruction sheets in spite of the fact they are already very good. Globally, they offer an excellent price/number of schemes and quality ratio. I highly recommend them. Thierry
