  1. Hello , It's a longer time now since I have postet my last build here. But finally I have made some pictures of my latest Wingnut build and would like to share it with you for discussion. Maybe it is not one of my best ones but it was a lot of fun to build. It was the first time for me to work with "wood decails" and I must say the quality of those included in the kit was really great. Hope you like the result , if not please let me know your recommendation for making it better next time :). Peter
  2. I have recently finished reading "Winged Victory" by VM Yeates. I highly recommend it and it has inspired me to break out my WNW kits. I was so inspired that I have started all three - an Albatross DV, a Fokker DVII (OAW) and a Camel BR1. I thought I could move these along together but am finding them so difficult that they will follow one after the other. I am concentrating on the Albatros for now. As these are my first WNW, I have a few observations. Anyone who builds these kits and produces a great result is a genius as far as I am concerned. The fitting of the parts is so tight that a coat of paint makes it difficult to slot parts together. I think that is actually quite poor. Surely, it is easy enough to allow a few extra microns to cope with paint? I am sure this has been covered before in this forum, but it is bugging the hell out of me. The quality of moulding is simply amazing. A great deal of research has obviously gone into getting the kits as accurate as possible. Lots of small parts mean that the carpet monster is being fed well and my Albatros cockpit will be minus a few essentials. Obviously, these were stripped out on the real aircraft to save on weight. Honest... The instructions are beautifully produced. It would be nice if they actually showed how things went together. WNW says to read them at least three times. Yeah right. Again, this is bugging me. A decent rigging diagram would be good that actually showed where the attachment points were and that clearly showed where each cable ended. Maybe this will become clearer when I start rigging. Finally, there are errors in the instructions for the Albatros. The compass decal is incorrectly called out and I only spotted it after I have put it on. Fortunately, I could correct it. I decided to try acrylics for the wood grain and I was pleasantly surprised at how well this worked. For a first attempt, I am happy with it and may get better as the Fokker and the Camel come into play. I managed to get all the wood done and varnished inside a day, which is lightning for me. Overall, this build is a bit of a trial for now. I am looking forward to progressing and finding the enjoyment that is surely there. Anyway, enough of me, pics to follow at the weekend.
  3. Hi ! It's my last finished model. I started it about 2 years and a half ago, stopped and restarted it several times. I even stripped the whole fuselage and repainted it as i was not satisfied of my first try of the sponge camo (yes i had to redo the whole wood grain finish of the fuselage....). But finally it's done, and i'm happy with it. It's an Albatros built Albatros D.Va of the Seefrontstaffel 1, flight by Lothar Weiland It's built mostly OOB except the very nice HGW Daimler radiator, Master brass Spandau barrels and sleaves, and a few details from Taurus in the engine (valves and rockers, sparkplugs...) and a few scratch built stuff. The rigging was made with EZ line and Gaspatch turnbuckles, with also a few microtubes cut to lenght. Painting the laminated wood with a realistic way was the last challenge of the build and took me about a whole day. But i think it was worth it, and i will reuse this technique for sure. It built smoothly as the fit is excellent, with no bad surprise. There is only one thing i always find scary with WNW kits : the undercariage is very soft, even a bit elastic. Recently i built a Nieuport 11 from Special Hobby, and the undercarriage is very stiff and looks strong, while the WNW undercarriage struts of my WNW models seems to be made of jello when even the slightest movement hit the model. Anyway, even soft and flexible, it seems to carry the weight of the model without any problem, so i think it's ok.   4. More building to support the WWI anniversary. Beginning to love these 1/72 kits as they are quick builds and I like the wide range of colors to play with. I am a LITTLE over the top on the colors but hey, why not! I'm already pretty well started but here is the update. Fuselage decals tomorrow I hope. These are fun kits. Chris
  5. Hi, Here is a build of mine, but actually it is idle at the moment (i will explain why...). I've starded it a few months ago, but put it apart, then restart it. I've done the cockpit, the engine, enclosed the fuse, painted the wings (but not very satisfied, i may repaint them later), and so on. The scheme i wanted to do is this one : So i started to make the wood first, and was very satisfied with the result (i did not wanted to use decals as anyway most of the plywood will be hidden by the sponge camo). Then i painted the tail yellow, with the former german cross visible by transparancy. Everything was going smooth. And then the tragedy : the camo. I totally missed up this damn camo. And because i'm dumb, i started to put on decals.... So at the moment, this nice model is waiting for her paint to be clean off, and i will repaint it all. With the same scheme (i'm a bit masochist....). So here are a few pictures of the cockpit, sorry for the bad quality (i forgot to shot more pictures before closing it) : It was a pain to put the control cables on the small pulleys (and make them straight !), but except that, i really enjoyed building it.
  6. Not only my first WNW but my first post here as well. This was quite a change from the Luftwaffe stuff I'm used to doing and I don't do much in 1/32. Although WNW could have me rethinking this. Excellent kit (guess they all are). Fun all the way through like a book you can't put down. One question for those of you who have built this one. What's the deal with the port upper wing? I was thinking it was warped but both this and the other unbuilt in my stash are the same. Furthermore every online build I've seen, that port wing has a hump in it. Period pics don't show it and I can't imagine it would fly if it was really that different from the starboard. I got some of it out of mine but not nearly enough I think. So here we go... hmmm...there seems to be some difficulty getting the full size images. Oh well I'll figure that out for next time. Don't have a fancy signature. guess I'll work on that next. Since I've been building parts of so many kits lately and flipping between the subjects so quickly, I'm going to maintain this thread as my own WWI group build and try to keep the content coming frequently so that no-one gets bored and so that it looks like I'm actually progressing on things. Currently on the go are the following Wingnut kits and the photos below show their levels of completion: 2x Albatros D.V, a Pfalz D.IIIa, a Gotha, and also I've started dry-fitting bits from the early Felixstowe. The single-seaters are being done as quick builds so I have done, or will be doing, only minimal interior weathering. The interior bits are not glued in yet as I've still got control lines to install. Here goes! Merc assembly line: The Alby interiors: One will be the all-green Jasta 5 bird from the Wingnut flying circus decal sheet, the other, I'm not sure yet. The camo wings are done with MisterKit paints, the colors look very good to my eye! Pfalz Gotha - this will be in the blue/purple LVG "MoRoTa" markings and I'll be using the wire mesh wheels from Steve Robson Cowls will both be closed, so the engines only got basic paint that will be seen through the rear openings And just for laughs, here's a comparison of the massive Gotha wingspan and length compared to the even more massive Felixstowe wingspan and length. That's a 1/48 resin Felixstowe at the bottom of the photo for comparison, also. I may need a bigger display case... I have a very involved and unique diorama idea in mind for the Felixstowe and it's going to involve a LOT of scratchbuilding!
  8. Slight change in plans here. Owing to an absence of what I require to finish my Ki-61 for our regional next year (and for some other reasons as well), I've decided instead to pursue the Roden Albatros D.III, in Jasta 17 markings. This will be done mostly OOB, but with some AM thrown at it, most notably a WNW Mercedes, Master Spandau's, Taurus and Barracuda engine dress up parts, and perhaps the Part P.E. set, though I don't really feel that's needed, as such. Obligatory box shot. This kit, and a few others, were very generously gifted to me by our own LSP_Ray. Thanks again, Ray, I appreciate it much!
