  1. Next build is this Hasegawa A6M5 Type 52 Zero Night Fighter (Kit no 08252). This kit will be built mostly OOB, with a few AM enhancements, and I will be using the kit decals to cut masks from for painting. (Scheme as per the box art) The aircraft will be built with a closed canopy - to show off the 20mm cannon that was installed in the rear part of the cockpit fuselage decking. Having an open canopy would hide the defining part of this aircraft - so I will not be going to town on the cockpit - it will be built OOB with nothing extra than some HGW belts. I have a HGW rivet set to throw at it, as well as Master brass barrels and Eduard wheels and CMK Bay doors. I also have an Eduard exterior detail that I bought for my Tamiya Zero (built) but never used it. Thought I might use it on this kit, but some measuring, looking at fit, etc later. I've decided against it as the design of this Tamiya-specific AM wouldn't work well. So the wheels wells remain as they are, and the flaps will remain up! The gear wells will do, perhaps a line or two will be added. So far I've snipped the major parts off the sprues, and completed the assembly work on some sub-assemblies. Most of it is only dry fitted at the moment, but parts like the cockpit assemblies are ready for paint Fuselage halves are only dry-fitted together, as well as the engine. It seems to go together pretty well!! I've drilled out the holes in the cylinders for the ignition wires, etc I made rivets on the rear cockpit decking, this was missing on the kit, but quite prominent on the real a/c. Will have to redo some of them methinks once I glue it all together The kit gear legs with the Eduard wheels and CMK doors. CMK only provides two support struts between the doors and the legs, should be three, so I'll have to SB another one, but that shouldn't take too long at all!
  2. Admin/Moderators, please move to correct area if this isn't appropriate place. I’m really wondering if I need to clear out some of my stash of older kits. I know most the old Revell 1/32 kits date from the 60s and have been reissued several times AND by and large been eclipsed by far better kits. The only one I’m not sure about is the Revell Hurricane Mk I. IIRC, the molds were modified to produce the cannon equipped version Mk II. Is that right? I have fond memories of building the Corsair, P-40, P-47, Typhoon, Spitfire Mk I, Wildcat, Stuka and Zero and maybe others…and may even build the P-40 as a lark as I remember it being a decent looking model…despite being an E in AVG markings. What about the SBDs? Former Matchbox IIRC. Neither opened, but expect them to be of the same era and lacking as badly as the P-47 and P-51B. Same with the P-38J kit. Having the Trumpeter, I doubt I’ll build one and don’t need two. On the old Hasegawa and Hasegawa/Minicraft kits, they are largely of the early seventies. Are the old M-109E and Fw190s decent kits? I’m not much of a German a/c builder, though thinking these might be good projects to learn on. While improvements over the Revell kits, are they reasonable accurate or do they have major shape/fit issues? I think the 109G14 is a much later and better kit. Is that true? I found a 2002 date on it versus 60/70s on the others. How does the Zero compare to the Revell? What about the Oscar? These were is sealed clear poly bags I didn’t want to open so hard to compare. I certainly have a surplus of Hasegawa P-51Ds and will be shedding some of them. im working my way through Scalemates looking at various boxing’s and original tool dates. At the moment, nothing is for sale or trade, but some soon will be once I get educated a bit more. I acquired many of these from a good friend who was a retired USAF F-106/F-15 pilot and retired FedEx Captain. He died in a small plane crash a couple of years ago and his wife gave me all his kits which accounts for me having multiples. Nothing is up for sale or trade at the moment. I will list it here first when I decide what I'm doing with which kit and gauge if there is any market for these or if postage will be more than they are worth. I am hanging on to my new Hasegawa P-47s (3). I would appreciate your feedback.   4. I've started my Tamiya A6M2b in my usual snail-like pace... Let's hope that this will be a project that will see completion! I know there are some minor things that need adressing to get this model more accurate. Luckily, the don't concern the shape of the model, but more details because of the workable undercarriage and details thet aren't quite correct for the timeframe and so on. Because I know that a couple of Tweak Lists were published about the A6M5 and A6M2 but couldn't find them I started this thread: Not only will Ryan Toews redo his tweak lists when his family-situation will allow it, this thread contains lots more invaluable info! Check it out! The box art shows the A6M2b of Lt. Saburo Shindo from Akagi of the 2nd wave of the Pearl Harbor attack: I feel particularly drawn to this scheme, though, the Zero of NAP1/C Tsuguo Matsuyama from Hiryu: Sadly, my first results have to be redone, since the double vertical attachment of compressed air bottles on the left fuselage side wasn't found on the A6M2 but rather on the A6M5...! Can it be seen anyway, on the finished model? Looks like the seat rather blocks any view into the aft fuselage! I think copying the single-bottle brackets also found in the Big-Ed set won't be too hard, so a single horizontal set-up should be possible! I already removed the massive plastic brackets Tamiya supplies the bottles with. Now to find out how the equipment on this shelf looked. Tamiya supplies us with something looking like a Sony CD-player and Eduard follows suit. That doesn't mean anything since Eduard states that it supplies extra details but doesn't supply corrections!   6. Hello everyone, I'm starting a new build and I'm wanting to do the captured paint scheme of Koga's Zero. I'm already messing up though I do think. I've tried two approaches to doing the Aotake blue-green and I don't think either looks good. The lighter one is by Model Master and is Japanese interior Blue. The other one I tried mixing the suggested colors Tamiya has in the manual and to me it looks too Blue in color. I know this subject has been beat to death on colors, but I'm not doing so hot here and remembering why I always stayed away from Japanese subjects. Here is what it looks like so far: Thanks, Brady
  7. After weeks of work, here is my finally completed Tamiya A6M2 Zero. It was a fun build. Not too difficult, mostly because of the high quality of the kit, however, attaching the wire they supplied for the antenna was the hardest part of build. Of course, the painting and weathering portion was challenging. Enjoy!
  8. Hello- These are pics of my Tamiya A6M2 1/32nd scale Type 21. My model depicts the aircraft of NAP1/C Tsuguo Matsuyama during the 2nd strike of the Pearl Harbor attack. The kit took me a long time to build, mainly due to life's interruptions, such as going back to college for a master's degree, and other situations. Anyway, it's an excellent kit, the fit is great unless you add too many details (I found that out during the build and it slowed me down) but, in the end, the kit fits together easily (typical of Tamiya), and it was a lot of fun. I used mostly GSI Mr. Hobby Colors for the build, along with Taiya paints, Alclad II lacquer, Vallejo acrylics, lots of Future, and even some blue food coloring . The tires and drop flaps were aftermarket resin, I added wiring in the cockpit and on the engine, and the seatbelts are the ones included in the kit, which are probably the weakest part of the model. Overall though, I'm very happy with the way it turned out. Thanks for looking!   10. Hi all! I just started building a Tamiya kit A6M2b. Started from engine. And now I have a lot of questions. I can not find no good photo or scheme of Nakajima NK1C Sakae 12 engine. Especially the rear side. Maybe someone have seen something about this? Best regards, Ilya

  12. I was tinkering with the idea of trying to make the Tamiya A6M5 an A6M7. What all would I need for this conversion? I know I'd need wing tanks from some other model perhaps a Ki-61 Tony? A centerline bomb, which I have a spare from the Doyusha A6M2 Bakusen kit. What all will I need to do to the guns in the wings and possibly the cowling too? I may find this project too overwhelming and just say the heck with it, but I wanted to ask anyway. I'm thinking I want an A6M7 like Hasegawa makes in 1/48 scale with wing tanks and a centerline bomb. After that the challengebwill be markings. Cheers, Brady
  13. Hello everyone, I'm interested in doing a model of the Chinese captured Zero, V-172 serial 3372, in the paint scheme it carried after the Chinese forces handed it over to the U.S. for testing. You can see a lot of pictures and background information here on the Pacific Wrecks website: http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/a6m2/3372.html It's probably a more interesting and accurate article than listening to me ramble anyway. Not to mention you can go to the main part of that website and see information and whatever photos they have on LOTS of captured Japanese warbirds from WWII. Anyway, what I'm trying to figure out is what colors to use on the insignia in the pictures where the Zero is being guarded by an American MP towards the bottom of that article. I'm thinking this is just a blue circle and the insignia isn't finished yet. The bars however I'm puzzled with because they seem way too dark to be white and they're not the same color as the circle. I don't think this is the original Japanese insignia as the circle either because it originally seemed to be closer to the rear of the canopy frame than the insignia is in the last photos where they seem to be closer to the tail once the Zero was in American possession. I haven't found photos of this bird where the Chinese painted their insignia on the fuselage at all, they just painted the fuselage OD Green and Neutral Grey. I'm guessing that we didn't change the OD Green over Neutral Grey paint scheme once we got it in American possession. Why give it a whole new paint job when you can just paint new insignias over the Chinese markings and be done? I have one photo of this bird where it still has its Chinese tail number but U.S. insignia under the right wing from before it received the EB-2 or EB-200 tail codes. This bird is also easy to identify by the custom made panels behind the cowling flaps on each side that have vents in them unlike the ones produced by either Japanese manufacturer, so that makes it easy to identify no matter what the paint scheme is. Tell me your thoughts on the colors please so I can build it. Cheers, Brady
