  1. Hello all! was shopping at Sprue Bros. last night and found these. http://store.spruebrothers.com/category_s/1889.htm?searching=Y&sort=7&cat=1889&show=100&page=1&brand=Teknics Now i thought Teknics was a Meteor house brand, something that disappeared when Meteor closed. Have they ( Dave, IIRC ) started up again, old stock, or....really miss some of the old Meteor stuff, would like to see some of the Cuting Edge stuff again. Don
  2. Long time since i updated. Thanks for the feedback guys!! I still have no idea why things went bad, i sealed the decals with nothing hotter than Tamiya Acrylic clear, something i've done countless times before. Anyway, i do have a plan. I'm going to turn it into a whiff car, stripping the blue, painting it white, then applying these decals i found online. Kinda like the Hasegawa F-14/15 with the Anime decals, should bue a very unique build!! Nah!! Just kidding!! I've stripped the upper body and nose, will have to redo some seams then final sand and paint. I tried using Easy Off Heavy Duty oven cleaner and Castrol Superclean. Neither of these did anything to the Tamiya paint, i finally used brake fluid to strip off the paint. I have to say, the Tamiya sprays are really tough paints!! Pic of where i stand. I've ordered some decals from Indycals to duplicate the scheme from Tamiya, but i'll have to paint the gold. I didn't strip the spoiler or side pods as the decals and paint are in good shape. I might be faced with a mismatch in the gold, but i'll live with it. Don
  3. Thanks for the suggestions, guys!! I don't use future as a clearcoat, i use Tamiya Acrylic clear X-22. I've been using this for a while and before this i used Modelmaster Acryl clear gloss. I've never had decals do this before, my SOP applying the clear is the same on this as on all builds. I'm pretty careful of going cold over hot, not hot over cold. -Clear gloss -decals -clear gloss to seal decals -panel line wash, chipping, etc. -flat coat -weathering with MiG dust I think i'll try sanding down the gold area then blow in some gold if i can find a match. There is a blue #20 on the sheet provided if the builder wanted to mask/paint the stripes.....Woulda/shoulda/coulda. Don
  4. Ok, applied a clearcoat to the build and had the nose #20 decal go bad. Don't know why it did, but there it is. Never had this happen in i don't know how many builds. What i should have done is painted the gold. I'm going to put the build aside for a while as the next step is some heavy clamping of the side panels. One pic. Don
  5. The CE wing also has the bulges over the MLG pivot point. Never knew that CAM did F-4B/N wing tops. Don
  6. Have managed to apply all the decals. I was worried the large gold parts would be a problem, but they worked well. The nose #20 did wrinkle, i think i may have to settle for a little wrinkling. I just have to work on the edges, then will clear coat. Two pics for the nite, this is a dryfit. Don
  7. OK, applied some of the decals tonight. These are from Cartograf and work really well. The #20 decal that goes on the front of the upper body part is wrinkled a bit, otherwise the ones i did applied went on great. I do like the mix of colors on this scheme and looking forward to applying the rest. Some pics for the night. Don
  8. Ok, paint is dry, will clearcoat today then apply decals mid week. I did hang most panels just to see how it looks. Don
  9. Nice!! Reminds me of the old comics " The Haunted Tank ". Don
  10. It's incredible the amazing skill and talent that some artists have. Sure, we build nice models, but they don't WORK!!! some guys make engines that small that run!! The parts available from RB Motion and Macs modelling are like little jewels, look really great installed. I would never be able to use them, too small for my old hands and eyes. I did manage to get some paint down today. This is a really dark blue from Tamiya spraybomb. Don
  11. I use Tamiya matt and gloss coats thinned with Tamiya brand thinner. IIRC Tamiya also have a retarder though I've never tried it. HTH Don
  12. I build with panels closed like it's ready to fly, just add pilot and close the canopy. I know some modellers want to showcase the detail work but I like the sleek lines of a plane ready to go. I also wonder why IIRC all F-86 Sabres and F-5 kits have the gunbays open as well. That test shot looks real nice, and it has Canadian markings!! Don
  13. Great feedback, guys!! and thanks for the F1 history bites. I'm hoping to apply the color coats this weekend. Don
  14. Does/did everyone (except Ferrari) use the Cosworth? While looking for refs of F1 cars it seems to a newbie that all teams used the Cosworth. The Dodge is the Revell kit with mods. I did a back half on it using sheet stock and the complete rear diff/4 link assembly from a Revell 55 Chev kit. This was the first or second car kit I had built in 20+ years. Thinking of doing another Pro street and have bought the AMT 1970 Dodge Super bee Pro Street for parts. I just have to decide what I want to build.
  15. Rhetorical question, why does every 1/32 starfighter kit have the gunbay open and airbrakes open? got that off my chest. I'm looking forward to the 1/32 Starfighter, want to do a Canadian bird and possibly a JASDF bird. from what has been shown, the kit looks really good. Don
  16. I don't know what is available aftermarket for these kits, but braided steel lines, fittings, linkages and wire harnesses would add so much to these kits. Combined with different shades of metallic paints, judicious weathering and a skilled hand would give you a showpiece. I do like the fit of all parts, particularly the engine/transaxle assembly, almost Lego like percision. The molds are old but still everything "clicks". I finally have all body panel assemblies primed/sanded/primed/sanded. Next will be for me a very difficult paint scheme. The car is glossy dark blue available in spray can from Tamiya. After decades of flat grey/grey/grey/green/brown...... aircraft schemes a gloss scheme is something i haven't had much experience at. will have to take my time. Pic of primered panels. Pic of two cars i've done recently Don
  17. Thanks for the feedback, guys!! I didn't know the kit was this old when i started, only after seeing the cast in date did i know. It must have been state of the art back then, i'm sure they could still hold their own now. Scotsman, i think with up to date accessories and aftermarket and an experienced hand these would be centerpieces in someones display case. Basically what i'm doing is carefully painting and assembling this kit, the complexity for a first time builder of these kits is enough. I do have to wonder what Tamiya would be capable of doing if they applied their skills used in the Mustang/Corsair/Zero to a new F1, Indycar, or even a Fuel Dragster. Something to ponder...
  18. Next was the cockpit tub and front suspension assemblies. The photoetch sheet does have a lot on it, but most will end up in the spares bin as I didn't see any gain on using most of it. I did prime the body parts with Tamiya primer but went a little heavy in areas. Also have some pitting to get rid of. Don
  19. Hello all!! This is my first work in progress here, odd how it's a racecar. I'm also posting this on another forum in a Group Build for Open wheeled racecars. This is an old Tamiya kit, date cast into it 1978. It still has good fit with some flash showing. I think they updated it with better decals and a photoetched sheet. This is my first open wheeled racecar and i'm not doing anything other than what came in the box. A few pics. I started with the engine/transmission/rear suspension assembly.
  20. The door idea sounds great, I used a big piece of MDF and one pine plank, same idea but smaller. I don't have the room for doors. I used cheap cabinets over the benches for storage. If I had a choice, I would go with the doors. Pics of my set-up. Don
  21. Wow!! That's big!! That's a problem too.... Don't think that's going to fit in my display case. Thanks for the comparison, much appreciated. Don
  22. Do you Corsair builders even sleep or eat? Just over a week and you're at weathering a complete build? Man, i feel so sloooowwwww. The camo scheme looks good, different from the blue schemes. Don
  23. Have you picked a loadout for it yet? Don
  24. I really like the detail paintwork you've done on your build, looks well worn. Does Tamiya give a paint mix recommendation for the pink color? Don
