  1. For me, this is a timely post. The Trumpeter Tomcat choice post mentioned the Revell F-14 being a viable alternative to the Trumpeter/Tamiya kits. I found the Revell F-15 a good alternative to the Tamiya Eagle as well. Which had me thinking, how the Revell F-16 was. Have to say, after my experiences with the F-14/15 i would be willing to give this a try, though  i have no room to build now.

  2. Which Trumpeter Turkey you need depends on many things. Timeframe, mission are big ones. Do you want the colorful flamboyant schemes, tactical grey schemes, VX-4 schemes...CAP mission, CAS, recon...loaded with air to air missiles, LGBs... Trumpeter/Tamiya/Revell all need work and/or aftermarket, how accurate and how much work is your decision. I've done all three, all were work intensive, all required aftermarket. Whichever way you go, will be a lot of work, but the finished birds always impress.

Thanks again guys. I'm trying to stay still til this rib heals a litttle more.  Every cough or sneeze feels

like it sets me back .

Rib fractures hurt like heck!! Pretty much anything you do causes pain. Had rib fractures at work while pulling heads and cam on a Ram hemi. Had to put it back together with fractured ribs. Worse part was torquing the heads down....takes time to heal, but you'll get there, three weeks for me and all was good. If on dominant side, will hurt more. Finger ok?

  4. I was a pretty casual(?) model assembler, so my reference library was pretty small. Most all references were/are by the internet. Still use some books, they're keeping my soon to use model bench level...OTOH i still buy fiction novels...

That tadpole, the external rudder balance, in my experience is inevitably knocked off during assembly. You are very correct about just cutting it off - that way you can keep it in a safe place until the end of assembly. It's funny, as I have the real item, and you'd need a nine-pound sledgehammer to knock it off the metal rudder structure, and I'm not sure even then you could do it. It's all very solidly built.

  6. Built this kit a while back, really enjoyable build. Used Montex masks, which also included decals for the numbers. Decals conformed nicely, masks were straightforward to use. At the time there were plenty of schemes to choose, don't know about now. Some build sore spots, review the builds here, well covered. When i did mine, i broke off and lost the tadpole on the top of the tail. I would recommend cutting it off early and add it at the end. Have fun!!

  7. Great to see the SLUFFs getting some attention, don't see many being built. Little story, back in the day, i tried building an E bird, but incredibly, the fuselage parts and wing parts would not glue together!! Any of the model glues would not melt the plastic, didn't try MEK, but no joy on any of them working. Tried putting a puddle of Tenax on an inner surface of a wing and pressing my thumb into the puddle, did NOT affect the plastic in any way. Got binned, got on with life. Off topic, what markings do you have planned for the D?

  8. Enjoying the build, excellent progress!! I've done a couple of JASDF Eagle Aggressor builds, last one i ended up with a ball of masking tape over a foot in diameter. Lots of small areas to mask, if you miss them, it looks off. IIRC i used the old Two Bobs sheet, had most of the stencils printed on grey backgrounds..
