Isn't there a blanking plate in the kit? If not you could use a circle cutter for the main hole and some

thin sheet to cover where the barrels stowed. I don't think it would be that difficult.

    Cheers...Ron

I don't think so.  But plastic card is my friend...

  2. Got my Osprey on B-24s in the PTO.   Nothing really helpful, apart from tantalizing glimpses of what the "improvised" ball turrets looked like.   Hmph.

I figure I have two options--just put the turret on (it looks good anyway) or blank it out and cover the hole in the flooring and call it turretless.

It's not like you can see it that well.  But still.

Apart from the two pics I posted earlier, no real idea of what that set up looked like.

    So onward...

    wow that IS very different.

looks like Moby Dick is marked safe from weird turret:
    http://www.b24bestweb.com/mobydick-v1-4.htm

so far the only peculiarities on this ship are early props (don't know if paddle props were fitted later, this ship flew a LONG time) and wheel covers. the weird turret is way beyond the scope of anything i'd try but reshaping aftermarket props and wheel covers ahouldn't be too terrifying.

Was thinking of doing Tokio express--I have a nice decal sheet.

Interesting the artwork shows no ball turrets on those aircraft--that would be easier to scratch build!

  4. OK--got most of the base done.  I used that purple foam stuff they sell at Home Depot to build up the terrain, cut the trench with the inexpensive heat wand thing I got from Amazon.   Balsa wood also involved.

Used plaster impregnated cloth to cover everything, then some additional plaster to fill in gaps, some AK interactive mud stuff I've used on armor kits.

Assorted other terrain stuff consisting of ballast, lichen, gravel etc from Custom Dioramics and elsewhere.  The sand bags are from Green Stuff World (found on internet).  You simply glue them on, wet them with a white glue/water mix and let them dry.  I will probably paint them/weather them a bit more though to dull down the color which is pretty close to accurate anyway.

Wire comes from  Green Stuff World again, very easy to work with.  Tank obstacles are from MiniArt.  The whole thing will need to be flat coated at the end as it's a bit shiny.   Will also be adding some Camo netting in various places.

    More to come.

the improvised ball turret would have had to have been retracted when the plane is parked, wouldn't it? i'd imagine dragging it on the ground would create... maintenance issues.

also, any 5th AF references you can recommend? 90th BG in particular but also 5th in general.

i'm most likely going to build a D, "Moby Dick" of 90th. plan B is a Ploesti ship but i'm about 70 percent leaning toward 90th. i haven't bought the actual kit yet as there's still a 10 percent chance i'll change my mind and do a J LOL

I don't think they had to retract it--the "dish" seems to have been almost flush with the bottom of the fuselage and there was 1 or 2 .50 cals mounted there.  Not sure how useful it was as a gun position.

I'll let you know what I find out, if anything.

    Cheers,

  6. As if I don't have enough work to do, I'm also doing an Omaha Beach dio for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.

I have the base fairly well developed at this point--pics to come!

This will show elements of the 29th ID reaching a German MG position and getting ready to take it out, as the gunners are distracted and reloading.

I have a bunch of different Dragon/DML figures and Tamiya ones I'll be using.

    Stay tuned!

my first wave of goodies have arrived. the Cold War Studios turret is gorgeous. so much so that there's a slight chance I'll build a J just so i can use two (haven't bought the kit yet, wanted to make sure solutions to the things that bother me could be obtained).

the Vector Resin engines and cowlings--also gorgeous. there are many plausible options for engines in 1/32, but enough people have cast doubt on the shape of the kit cowlings that i went this way.

Aerocraft landing gear parts are also gorgeous and incredibly sturdy. i got a bunch of their stuff, inlcuding legs for an OV-10 and O-2, and their resin parts for the Airfix Avro Vulcan. all their stuff is top quality. the studiness of the gear is important for a lib this big, as I'll be using tungsten putty (1.7 times denser than lead) to weigh the nose down and keep the bird from perching on its tail feathers.

still waiting for the books, ordered Log of the Liberators by Steve Birdsall and The B-24 Liberator: A Pictorial History by Allan G Blue. anyone know of anymore must-have Liberator books? I have several 1/72 Libs in the queue also, going a bit B-24 crazy. I also ordered Nine Yanks and a Jerk, a book about one particular B-24H that Jimmy Stewart flew. I already have the Iliad 1/72 decals for this ship, and Airfix has conveniently decided to drop a 1/72 B-24H so I don't have to convert little windows or anything.

Agree about the CW turret!  It is excellent.  Still not sure how to handle the improvised ball turret that 5th AF Birds had.  May just wimp out and go with the ball turret for my sanity's sake.

    We'll see.

At the 2:35 mark in this video some AN-M40 Parafrags are being dropped by A-20s:

you can view stills of the video below it. I wonder if they used this type of rack:

    https://www.docdroid.com/K5Qj24z/douglas-a-26-ab-erection-and-maintenance-manual-pdf#page=563

The way they are dropping, and the number dropped (31 by my count - 1 chute probably not deploying) i'd guess 4 racks each with 8 bombs for a total of 32, in the aft bomb bay. Just a guess on my part.

    Jari

Excellent info.  Now I'm wondering if I even have the correct racks given what I wanted to do.  The kit racks seem to be for GP bombs.  While the Resin2Detail 3-bomb clusters can fit on those mounts, not sure it's 100% accurate.

Will have to think about this some more.

All the photos I have ever seen have the parachute at the rear. To me, this would make sense, from an aerodynamics perspective.

Good--I'd have felt silly doing it wrong.  Backward just didn't seem right to me.

    Thanks!

  10. I have been all over the map with projects lately, having a Stringbag going in the D-Day Group Build.

But I've also been working on the A-20G.   Pics will follow shortly!

I have some nice M40 Parafrag bombs from Resin2Detail--but my question is which way do they face?  I read on the forums here (somewhere) the fuse should point aft with the parachute containers forward--is that the case?  Any tips appreciated!

I have the Zotz decal set but have not yet settled on which version I'm going to do.

    Stay tuned...!
