I wince Every.Time. someone says "quarter scale" when they mean 1/48th.

I know its only my own personal hang-up, as it doesn't seem to bother anyone else, even those who use the expression AND the metric system, even though it has an Imperial measurement connotation which to me makes even less sense than saying the expression itself (hard to believe) since I grew up with actual quarter scale models; AKA 1/4 scale.

nmayhew reacted to Rod Bettencourt in TBD-1 Devastator VT-3 Midway
The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was the US Navy’s premier torpedo bomber when hostilities broke out on December 7th  1941. Six months later it was completely obsolete and removed from combat operations. The subject of my build is from the USS Yorktown VT-3 aircraft (0303) crewed by Harry Corl and ARM3 Lloyd Childers. One the morning of the 4th at approximately 1200hrs Petty Officer Childers spotted smoke 25 miles away to the starboard. Machinist/pilot Harry Corl was able to get the squadron skipper Lt Cdr Massey attention. The skipper made a course correction to head for the nearest carrier (Hiryu). It was reported that at this time the squadron was jumped by approximately 30 Zeros. VT-3 was lucky enough to have 4 F4F Wildcats with them to help fend off the attackers. After what I could only imagine as an agonizing 20-minute slow approach, they were able to release 5 torpedoes. Corl and Childers 0303 had been badly shot up on the approach and the only way to keep airborne was to jettison their torpedo.

The following is from Machinist WO/Pilot Harry Corl Mission report date 6-15-42:

The free gun had jammed during the fight. Childers, Arm3, my gunner used .45 automatic during the 10 minutes of the attack. Childers was hit in the right ankle causing a compound fracture of the same. He received two hits in his left leg above the knee no broken bones in that leg. I arrived at the Yorktown at 1425 circled it twice and saw that there was no chance of getting aboard. (Yorktown was bombed by Hiryu Vals) So I proceeded over the Enterprise. I attempted to land aboard, but discovered I did not have enough tab control on the elevator to keep the nose up. I landed in the water head and to the starboard of the carrier alongside the destroyer USS Monaghan. The time of the landing was 1510.

    Ensign Harry Corl was KIA(VT-3 TBF-1) 25 August 1942.
Lloyd Childers survived the war and became a Marine Aviator and retired as a Lt Col.

This is the Trumpeter 1/32 TBD-1 Devastator from VT-3 USS Yorktown on June 4th 1942 Midway. I added Air Scale products such as the Photo Etch, propeller set, wheels and the single .30cal machine gun. I highly recommend their products. I did bits of scratch building such as adding cockpit wiring, relief tube, two internal windscreen braces (removed the molded on external windscreen braces), wingfold braces and leather pad for the bombardier under the pilots area. I used AK real color for the light grey bottom Model master Blue/grey for the top and AK for the interior green for the crew areas. I have seen some debate on-line about this, what color? But for me seeing the pics of sunken TBD’s aircraft from the discovery of the USS Lexington at the battle of Coral Sea. Interior green is also stated in TBD’s Devastators in action book(The Old One). Another debate is whether what squadrons carried the twin .30’s. It is very obvious that VT-8 for sure had them and I have seen some documentation that VT-6 (USS Enterprise) may have also had them. After many hours of research, I came to the conclusion that VT-3 only had the single.30. I came to this by listening to several recorded interviews With Mr. Lloyd Childers. And in the end, there is just no conclusive proof they carried the twins. I also used Hawaiian Air Depot masks for the A/C numbers and the insignias. I had previously bought the Gold Medal decal but figured painting over the corrugation would be far easier then decals. But I am glad I purchased it because they come with aircraft data. If anyone has seen what Trumpeter did with their data decals….well.

A few weeks ago Jadlam had the E/F on sale at a VERY low price ( under £240 iirc )
and I was extremely tempted, but realised that it would probably stay in the stash for ever,
and looking at yet another huge box in the stash would add to the albatrosses around my neck,
unusually for me somehow I managed to resist buying it.

I don't want to say something stupid, but the impression I have is that the camo was given on the field.
what if the light part under the swastika was the same color as the lower surfaces? the profile interprets the light spot behind the cockpit as aluminium-coloured, it seems to me... all this suggests a machine that is not fresh from the factory, but put together/repaired at flight group level.

    my usual zwei pfennings, obviously.

keep plugging away, but the bottom of that rad intake looks quite ‘conspicuous’ and needs quite a bit of work I would have thought. I mention this only because you are clearly competent btw. My Tamiya kit / refs are upstairs so I’m not sure what panel line (if any) is around there, but hopefully you can get it resolved.

Completely unhelpful to your conundrum, @Bstarr3, but sometimes tires IRL also have seams, just sayin'...

Here's a maintainer doing his best to scrape that pesky seam off a Finnish 109.

Good luck with your tires, whichever route you decide to pursue!

    Hi Bstarr3,

Really liking the work and the effort you're putting into this kit - really sharp looking work.   With regard to your photography, can I just say that white backgrounds look really good in most cases but they create a 'high dynamic range' image that can be very, very difficult to manage.   High dynamic range means there's a big difference between the extent of the shadows and highlights in a given image.

I respectfully ask that you consider (and try) the addition of some flash or light to fill the shadows in your scenes - thereby reducing the image's dynamic range.  This will reduce the degree of contrast between your shadows and your highlights (your dynamic range) and better display the tonal values of the work you've created.   Please don't see this as 'criticism' of your photography, it's simply intended to improve your skills and better depict the quality work you produce.   As a potential 'fix', try using a more neutrally toned background to give you a fighting chance of showing us what a truly amazing job you're doing on this project.  As I said, this is not a criticism of your photography, as such, but just some advice on how to better sell your work.  If you require a more detailed (and better) explanation, you are most welcome to personally message me.

    Kind regards,

    Wayne

The original painting instructions ("Lackketten") call for a removable paint applied over the summer camouflage.
I don't know what source material Mr. Crandall used, and it is of course possible that some units applied camouflage colours over the white wash, but if so, it was certainly the exception and not the rule.

You may already know this and if so, please disregard this post.  If you’re going to model a WWII aircraft, don’t use the metal colors on the wings top or bottom- with exception of the landing gear access panel on the top and the fuel tank panels on the wing bottom.  By and large and with very few exceptions of the paint being stripped, wings were painted in a top coat of silver paint.  Control surfaces (ailerons and flaps) were metal.

Of course this doesn’t apply if you’ll be painting the fuselage and wings with RAF Dark Green or Olive Drab.

Note, I intentionally omitted discussion about wing panel lines, primer, and filler… it’s not really pertinent and there’s discussions on this in other places on these forums.

Thanks for sharing the build here - I very much appreciate the detail you are providing which will be super helpful to others who go on to build this kit.

i have this and the Z-m 109, and tbh am in two minds about these kits. There is a great YouTube blog on the 109 by The Model Shed who is meticulous in his construction, so I know with that kit at least it does go together and it can be done.
But…all of this having to enlarge a hole here, shave off some some detail there etc, does not make me want to dive in I must admit.

I think ultimately Z-m’s game doesn’t match their ambition, but it is what it is. There aren’t any other ‘Uber kits’ of 109s or 190s, so it’s these or Hasegawa kits which are over a generation old, or Revell kits which promised much but are still mediocre compared to Tamiya and Kotare.

Looking forward to seeing the camo go on.
I had always thought it was whitewash added over camo, and then maybe cleaned off as spring came and there were breaks in the snow. In Jerry Crandall’s last book when describing some of these 190s I seem to recall he states greens etc were added *on top of* the whitewash.
Is there consensus as to what order these colours went on / anyone any evidence / thoughts etc?

best of luck with the rest of the project and thank you once again.

Base kit is Hasegawa's Fw 190A5 . I will use Montex's conversion set to backdate to A3. This set includes the shorter fuselage and other necessary parts.
It looks like "Yoda" is also interested in this project.
