  1. Wow! You weren't kidding. You've spent a fair whack of time on this thing. It definitely looks the part. I think the pencil panel lines will suit this thing best. Anything you engrave will probably be too stark. It wants a nice subtle line I think. Thanks for stopping by the shop to-day, been a while... Now, I wanna see this thing get finished!
  2. I think I'll be looking forward to this one. (Just wish they'd stop flogging Dr1s as 'The Red Baron'. grumble grumble... )
  3. Just got the HK B-17 in for stock. Nose is sectioned, tail position is sectioned and most of the interior is accessible through the cockpit roof. Will be easy to do the other versions. Great detail but those ejector pin marks are still there....
  4. Goody! Just what I need! I have really got to fight this addiction to styrene...
  5. Ask and ye shall receive......if you are patient...
  6. I still have a couple of the Paragon kits on hand as well as a pair of the Modelcraft kits if anyone needs one.....
  7. What he said. Testors does the colour in either a bottle or spraycan. ( it also exactly matches Michigan State Police Blue )
  8. Gratifying to hear (read) these responses. I shall bend every effort to obtain these pics. I really like the idea of offering him a model of the MiG as incentive ( I happen to have a couple on the shelf even). Unfortunatley for now, I have a 4 foot model of the Hindenberg on the bench right now that will take some time to complete and a Chris Craft (wood) to finish for another gentleman..... but when I get time....... I'll post the Hindenberg Pics when I get just a bit further along. Ian; no, I'm afraid I just run Riders for Corporate in Flint been here about 15 years though. Fun job but it doesnt pay much of anything, I make my toy money by building stuff for other people.
  9. As some of you might know, I run a hobby shop here in Grand Rapids Michigan, and I get to meet some interesting people from time to time... Today a gentleman stopped in whom I had talked to earlier in the week. He had been stationed in Korea in 1960 at Kimpo AFB I believe. He brought with him his scrapbook of his time over there. The first few pages were newsprint clippings about the 2 R.O.K. MiGs that had defected. The next several pages contained his personal photos of the incident along with shots of the pilots and page after page of photos of the MiGs! Interiors, engine details, armament bay, avionics etc. etc. etc. Unbelievable! Good sharp clear shots of everything he could think of, and except for the news photos, I'd never seen any of these things in print before.... I thought about asking to borrow the book so that I could scan it, but something like that is a bit much to ask a near stranger. He does train modeling these days however and I am hoping to raise the question sometime. He is an older gentleman and was quite flattered by the enthusiasm we showed over his tattered memory book. His kids could care less it seems. I worry that this collection will wind up in the trash or a yardsale after he passes I thought I would try to scan the whole book and thought you guys might be interested in seeing some of these pics. It will probably be a while before I get my grubby hands on the book, but I couldn't resist telling you guys about this. I figure if anyone would appreciate this, you guys would.
  10. I just got a copy of the 1c for my shop last week. I'd be happy to try to help with any questions you have on the kit. (no I haven't had time to do more than look at it)
  11. The last time Erwin mentioned this kit I shot my mouth off about knowing the guy that owned the tool, and how rare it was getting etc etc. Oops. The kit I was thinking about was actually a 1/32nd Staggerwing Beech. The Beaver is not as scarce as I made out. Sorry. Next time I'll do my home work first! Looking good there Erwin!
  12. OK my 2 cents! I sell airbrushes everyday along with a variety of hobby paints. I have found that most, if not all acrylic (waterbased) paints can be very nicely thinned with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. I tend to recommend that you use the manufacturers thinner for solvent based paints. It is just one less thing to go wrong with your colour. (I have to make recommendations that I can guarantee will work, or people will blame me for their screw ups) Once you are more familiar with your chosen paint then try some of the other thinner types. To thin colours for spraying, my rule of thumb is about 40% colour 60% thinner at about 20psi. This works with all paints in my experience. If you need to do a fine line, I thin to about 30%thinner/70%colour and drop pressure to about 15 psi. My favourite brush is the Paasche type 'H', single action external mix. I can do anything a double action brush can do and clean up and maintenance is MUCH easier. The brush is also a lot less sensitive to paint viscosity as well. (you can almost run peanut butter thru this thing!) I tend to suggest the double action brushes for freehand artwork. I am basicly a lazy slob and a 5 minute cleanup job for a 30 second spray job is not worth it in my book. You will eventually find out what works best for you simply by jumping in and spraying something. You may have noticed that everybody seems to do it a bit different. Find what works for you and go with that. Like I said though, I have to tell people how to do things that I can promise WILL work. There are any number of tricks that you can get away with tho...... Now go spray SOMETHING!
  13. Very nice detail, very clean. Hope to see some colour soon.. BTW what octane fuel do you run in 1/32nd scale? I keep burning up pistons......
  14. I disagree that the Matchbox kit is better, I have copies of both and I've been cobbling the two together to make one good kit. (The MB kit will probably windup as either a wreck or tarped over so I don't have to show the cockpit...) Panel lines in the MB kit are trenchlike although the kit appears fairly accurate in outline. Wings and fuselage etc are better in the Hasegawa kit, control surfaces are better in the MB kit, engine sux in both. The Verlinden update is very nice but unless you spend a LOT of time thinning the cowlings the engine simply will not fit inside.
  15. 9 bux is a good tab, if you want 'em, snag 'em while you can. After all, you can never have too much plastic!
  16. Lookin good erwin! Keep goin! By the way, if you wait until you have "all the data", you'll never start a model. I find myself bogging down in details and little fiddly bits sometimes. Some times it's kinda nice to just build straight OOB. (but that darn landing gear just doesn't look right, and hey, drooping the flaps is easy........ )
  17. Very pretty Coolie! I alway loved the look of pastels, but the finish was SO delicate! I think tho, that a combination of pastels and some light streaky washing makes a very realistic exhaust trail. There is a company out there called Bragdon Enterprises who do a new line of pastel powders that actually have an adhesive added. Scrub the stuff on and it DOESN'T come off on your finger tips. Even works pretty well on glossy surfaces. I suspect the added adhesive is powdered gum arabic. I'm gonna try mixing some up, ......sometime....
  18. Very pretty, My monitor here at work is a little dark, so I lose some of the detail, but it certainly looks like yer headed in the right direction!
  19. VERY pretty! Well worth the wait! Mr. Sherland you are an inspiration! We are currently holding a military modeling competition in my shop, I'll try to post some pics soon.....
  20. Sorry Chris, didn't mean to hijack yer post. Dunno if 617th was on WB or not, but wander over to WWIIOL and you can help us put the smack down on the axis!
  21. About the only thing I have on the bench (or at least nearby), is an old Monogram DC-3 cobbled together from a couple of wrecked kits for a friends O-Scale train layout. The finish is "Bare-Metal foil". A very useful product I find. Looking forward to seeing more on the Dewo, but please! Take your time! The sig was made by a very talented member of my World War II Online bomber Squadron. (I hear there is a 1/32nd Lanc kit in fibreglas out there somewhere!
  22. Very Pretty! Just like all your other stuff. One of these days, I'll finish one of my big scale kits and see if you guys like it.....
