Now that you have a pilot certificate I can offer this up:

You aren’t that far from Rockford. Let me know if you ever want to fly the L-39 with me- it’s easy to do. We can do a 1 hour orientation flight that will roll your socks down-

fair warning though: you’ll never be the same after.

    cheers

    Pete

Oh man, now THAT is an offer I do not think I could refuse!  I would love the opportunity to fly with you, let's make that happen!  I flew down to KRFD for my night XC, it was only about 55nm from here. :yahoo:

Well done, how many hours did it take you in total?

A little while ago, I thought about getting my fling-wing certificate but now that I'm 60 and have Type II diabetes (for now), I don't want the enormous expense ($250+ per flight hour or more) and don't think I can pass a flight physical.

Counting the check ride flights, it took me 70.2 hours.  I soloed with 9.7 hours in my logbook last July, and with my busy work schedule and my flight instructor working mostly weekends it took some time but I was absolutely fine with that!

Congratulations.  That's quite an achievement.  What have you been flying??

One thing to remember.  It is said that a good landing is one that you can walk away from.  But remember, a great landing is one where you can use the plane again .

    Cheers,

I have mostly been flying Cessna 172 N models, with a few training flights in a 152.  I did like the sportier 152, but must admit I like having more than one radio and the vertical seat adjustment on the 172.

Thank you so much everyone for dropping by and leaving a comment, I am still in a state of disbelief that I actually did it.  I have gone into my logbook numerous times to look at my Temporary Airman's Certificate to make sure it was not all just a dream.

  3. I remember a topic a while back discussing pilot's certificates, and someone told me to be sure to shout out when I earned my certificate.  I earned it this past Thursday, and honestly I can't remember being so excited since my first solo last year.  It's been a long road, but I have never before felt such a sense of accomplishment.  It's been my dream to be a pilot since I was 5 years old, and now at 52 I can finally say when people ask me if I am a pilot:

    YES, I AM:yahoo:

    Thanks!

Been there and done it.  It gets a might intense at times but well worth the pucker factor required to get in and then back out later without bending something.

+1 Flew in for the first time last year, what an experience!  I knew it would be intense but I was still shocked by all of that metal in the sky.  The seemingly archaic system they use to get everyone lined up and down safely is amazingly efficient.

  5. I have spent many hours the past few weeks trying to find a drawing or reference to the pitot tube post on the P-38E Lightning.  I did find a drawing of the AN-104-A antenna found on some Mediterranean based Lightnings, which I believe would have the same cross section but is a different length.  I want to model this in CAD so that I can print it in 1/48 for my Tamiya P-38 Lightning kit, but since I am doing the work I will also do it in 1/32.  The part I am after is the long pitot tube and post, just forward of the nose gear in this photo:

Can anyone help with a drawing showing this along with dimensions, or give me a length of that pitot tube mount?  Also, I believe the aircraft in the Aleutians used the SCR-522 radio, can anyone confirm this?  I am hoping this is correct, as I have already done the CAD work for this radio.

    Thank you for your help!
