I plan on building Wingnut Wings Salmson 2-A2 kit as a Kawasaki Army Otsu-1 Reconnaissance Aircraft.  This will be my first biplane and my first Wingnut Wings kit, so no promises it will be finished on time.  Not looking forward to the rigging. :'3

Japan imported several dozen Salmson 2-A2s after WWI.  A few years later Japan started producing their own Salmson 2-A2s, many by Kawasaki, and named them Army Otsu-1 Reconnaissance Aircraft.  There is an excellent Otsu replica at the Kakamigahara Aerospace Science Museum.  More pics can be found here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Kawasaki_Army_Otsu-1_Reconnaissance_Aircraft_in_the_Kakamigahara_Aerospace_Science_Museum

I have so many started kits...  Some are ready for paint, some are in some stage of construction, some are on hold for various reasons, and some I just gave up on.

I thought I should post up my progress so you all know it’s still in progress   Got a little bench time but not near as much as I’d hoped over the holidays. And here i am now heading off traveling for work this week so nothing i can do on Ume-Gumi till next weekend. Almost done with the pit. I took these shots to see what i needed to clean up before the next round of clear coat.

still deciding on whether to do wheels down or not. Pretty sure it’ll be a landing scene with the airbrake up but time will tell. That’s only relevant in that I decided no matter what the pilot would be just cocky enough to wave on touchdown

I had no idea this aircraft existed or that Wingnut had the kit. Fortunately Sprue Brothers still had it in stock. Mine should be here tomorrow.

Inserting my place-holder now - She will be all out of the box with a strong emphasis on PAINT!

I pulled the trigger on the only game in town for a camo pattern that I've been waiting 4 or 5 years to do. Hasegawa did a limited release in 1/72 scale. I plan to scan and create a set of masks for the 305SQ Commemorative scheme "Ume-gumi"! This will definitely take all 6 months of this GB to finish. I think I can master this now. My mini Ume-Gumi kit below...

I can't believe I'm going to jump into this as I finish up the F/A-18F DigiHell but I gotta do it. I always said it was waiting for an LSP group build to execute on.

Opened my kit and found a broken windscreen. Heard back from Tamiya USA and they are sending a replacement completely free of charge! What a great organization.
I've pulled some cockpit parts off the sprue so I'll start posting pics this weekend I expect.

    HI guys,
it's been a while since I post any comment nor progress on my many unfinish build... but hey, got a few days left before getting back to work
so I'm jupping in with this Italeri Tf-104G, evendo I did not have all my goodies readily on hands, just got enough to start.

Gonna use Quinta 3D pit, Gunze paint, and coming in, a full set of Fundekals and Aerobonus Seat/pilot.

    Very nice set..

Color based on the 1/48 Hasegawa kit and making sure that I could get all I needed regarding my numbers with Fundekals sheet....

Thanks for watching and will do my best to finish this one in time....

Ok, NOW I'm calling the cockpit "done" (spare a couple of touch-ups I see that are needed, as I look at the photos!  ).

I used Off White with a touch of Khaki mixed in for the bungee suspension rigging. I added a bit more wire and thought about doing even more, but realize that most of it wouldn't be visible, anyway. So, it's time to move on, I think.  Now I can start riveting the main airframe parts and get them ready for assembly.  I see in the instructions that they tell you to remove a hatch on the right side of the fuselage that is ever so slightly raised from the rest of the surface. Not looking forward to that, but also need to do some more research to figure out what it is and if it should actually be there, or not. If it does need to be removed, I'll want to do that before riveting. I could just be lazy and decide to leave it there, anyway. Hoping it's not too hard to remove, if required.

Thanks again for all the input (and special thanks to Mike for the photos of the seat/suspension system!). It is greatly appreciated.

PlamoSnep reacted to Fanes in Tamiya A6M2 Zero-Sen (Rabaul base)
At the beginning of this GB there was a lack of Zeros, so I started looking into the subject.
The Tamiya kit was set early (even though I got mine 2 days ago), since I wanted an easy build - at least compared to the struggle with a Revell Spitfire..
The dark green over grey schemes of the A6M5 aren't my cup of tea. So an A6M2 in green-brwon-grey (J3) was basically set.
The standard ones - Pearl Harbour etc. - have been so many times, that I started looking for something else.
During my research I stumbled uppon the small scale kit from eduard with a field applied camo:

Eduard being eduard, doesn't provide any useful information to the subject and I couldn't find any pictures in my references and the internet.
    So, that's a nono.
Talking about references: I have "A6M Zero Aces 1940-43" from Nick Millman as a general ressource and the Pacific Profiles No.5 for more specific stuff. I plan to get Nick Millman's early Zero guide, too.
Thumbing though the Pacific Profiles, I found an interesting one:

Profile 70 is a Nakajima built A6M2 from 252 Kokutai with a quite unusual camo, that gets denser from front to aft.
    I guess, I'm set..

    What material will be used?
of course the beautiful Tamiya kit (my first) a Quinta cockpit set, that came with it eventually some parts from the Montex mask set (was ion the box) more likely: masks cut on my Silhouette eduard stencil decals eventually a set of HGW seatbelts resin wheels - are there any for the A6M2?

That's it for now. I'm off to buy the necessary colours and looking for a set of resin wheels.

    Cheers
    Joachim

PlamoSnep reacted to denders in Spraybooth Recommendations?
I bought one of a version of that spray booth but found I thought it was a bit small for 1/32 models. I found a link to a bit larger booth and used that information to build my own. It is still perhaps on the smaller side depending upon what model you're painting, but It's better. It is 24" wide, inside, and about 15" deep before the filter. I used a 'hose' from the booth that is similar to the one you're showing on the self-built booth. The hose I have is ~4" diameter (12.5 square inches) and the square exhaust from the fan is 4" square (16 square inches).

Something to remember if you use a fan like what I've used. The exhaust outside should be close to the same size (square inches, square mm) as the fan exhaust opening because some of the air that is exhausted is drawn in through the motor to cool the motor. (That type fan does not have the motor in the paint air flow.) If you don't move enough air, the motor will overheat and usually the small temperature device in the motor will shut off the motor. I learned this from an earlier paint booth that I built where the fan exhaust is 6" square (36 square inches, and I was using a 4" diameter hose (12.5 square inches). It overheated and shut off in the middle of painting.

The rule of securing small PE pieces is that if it's not where you want it, it will stick instantly, and if it is where you want it, it won't stick at all.

I usually use Mercury Adhesives CA and don't have any issues.  If you're worried about strength, epoxy would be the way to go, but you would have to hold the part in place for 5 mins or longer.  Another option would be G&S Hypo Cement.  I use it mostly for clear parts (though it can craze clear parts if you get it on them) as it's much stronger than white glue.  It is a bit of a pain to use as it wants to string everywhere.
