  1. Did all the metals today. Combination of alclads randomly mixed until it looked right. The exhausts will tone down with some filters & washes but the reverser buckets always look quite shiny in photos. This will now need to cure then I’ll finish tidying up the stores & landing gear. Next coat the whole thing with Alclad acqua gloss hopefully before I head away on my work trip tomorrow.
  2. Fantastic, thanks for that!
  3. Thanks, I suspected as much. My previous build (Harrier) had inaccurate RAF munitions too. I wonder if it’s been coincidence or kit makers seem to struggle with RAF weaponry? What missiles replaced them out of interest? I guess Eduard could probably come to the rescue, but tbh there’s something about AIM9’s that just look the part to me. I’m not a great stickler for accuracy but my son is building the Revell 1/32 GR1 in parallel with me. Even I’m biting my tongue as he’s doing it all grey with HARMs!! I really need to get over myself haha. Anyway topcoat is now on with a couple of different shades for replaced panels. I’ve been looking at lots of photos and some of these birds look like right cut & shuts towards the end. I really like it though as it breaks up the grey abs gives it some interest. Engines tomorrow hopefully. dibt know what to do about the det cord. Tried Tamiya flexible masking tape and thought it was going to be ok but didn’t match the molded one & looked awful so I removed it. Any ideas gratefully received. EDIT another question regarding the opened canopies. I see photos of them fully opened without the kit supplied strut which props it open. Presumably they had some kind of gas strut or hydraulic system? Is that strut thing an actual thing? It’s a real shame the kit doesn’t assist with canopy being poseable, looks like you have to glue it open if you don’t want to use the clothes-line stick.
  4. Machine gun. Instructed to drill 1mm hole. Thanks Italeri!
  5. What a great thread! Didn’t know about it until someone asked me to post the cockpit of my work in progress Italeri Tornado GR4. The seats are Quickboost, are a work of art, feel like cheating and seemingly paint themselves! I wish I’d used a lighter grey. A lot is hidden by the shade of the overhanging sidewalls but should still have a decent amount visible.
  6. Though nothing sexy to show you yet, I’ve done a lot of work since the last update. Everything bar a few tiny ariels/pilots etc is now attached. Stores are now assembled & cleaned up. Canopy internal frame masked & sprayed. All other parts/sub assemblies ready for painting/decalling/weathering before fixing. So a bit of masking to be done before painting can start. A bit of priming of the intakes to check for gaps/smoothness and I’m happy. box of all the other bits, ready for the paint shop and/or detailing by hand.
  7. Ah maybe it’s not just me haha. Here’s hoping the intakes will be ok tomorrow. Yes it’s amazing how fast I can work with the kids back at school, no work for a couple of weeks, and a motivation to finish so I can reclaim my desk.
  8. Flaps, slats & final mating of aircraft sub assemblies today. Trailing edge flaps look really complex but are a very simple 2-part construction and fit quite nicely, albeit with no obvious mating surfaces to aim glue at. Leading edge slats are very complicated as each screw jack & hinge must be cut out, with the screw jacks fixed individually into the slat, the actuators into the l/e, with blind faith that the holes on both side will match up. Quite fiddly, but worked ok Final test fit of the top section of the rear fuselage/wings the committed the screws into the wings and glued the top. Mated the front and fixed the fin so I could finalise the stowed reverser buckets. I found these more complex than they needed to be and ended up having to remove the outer parts of the p.e to make them flush but they’re still not as good a fit as I’d like. I’d prepared the metal parts with Alclad black gloss ready for painting before the main airframe, but on reflection I’ve decided to do them last. Will be more of a masking faff but I’ve bad experience ruining beautiful but fragile metallic Alclad by masking. Very disappointed to see I’m going to need filler here at the very least. No idea if it’s the kit or my mistake? Oh well. Will wait until intakes assembled though as I’ve heard on the grapevine I might need some there too Anyway, playing with some loosely placed other bits placed it looks like nothing bar a major disaster is going to stop it turning into a Tornado now
  9. Makes me want to complete mine. No way would i be brave enough to attempt that foil job though, hats off, that is already looking beautiful
  10. No idea why I bothered! Once I’d started following the instructions I entered my zen state till I’d finished.
  11. I’ve wished for a big version of this ugly but to me fascinating aircraft for ages. I’ve heard you need to spend a lot to even pose the rear gunner open is that correct?
  12. Looking forward to seeing this. Great that you’ve got history with the aircraft. I can vouch for those resin seats you’ve bought, I think they may be the best I’ve used.
  13. Engine & reversers for the afternoon. Engines themselves straightforward although the rearmost internal (afterburner?) frame behind the rear turbine fan must have needed a locator pin to fit which I must have sanded or clipped off in error. Luckily you can hardly see anything in there anyway thankfully No work discount for not posing the buckets open. More p.e with fiddly shapes to make and vague info on how to angle the brackets at each side.I got them wrong first time which made life quite hard for me Which meant locating them to these tiny actuator pins is really quite hard. I think I could have potentially ruined the model at this point and again, the instructions could have been much more “instructional”! the fit isn’t there yet at as they’re not flush. Some fettling needed but enough for today.
  14. Very very nicely done Mark! You should be proud of that one. Great inspiration for mine as well. (I'm starting to find my own Coastal Kits bill going up these days too :-)
  15. Thanks mark, yes I tested that last night with those glove things and am ok... no thanks to the instructions though
  16. The more I think about it the more I really wish I could do the landing rollout configuration with all the dangly bits thrown out. If I ever see a decent set of resin pilots I’ll probably order another one of these and do a second.
  17. This won’t be as interesting a build as the other very excellent detailed one just completed. I tend to not be too bothered about realism and just build oob but maybe another take on the subject might be useful to someone? Progress has been mainly on sub sections and lots of test fitting as I wrap my head around how it fits together. Seems quite neatly designed and looks like it’s going to be ok. Annoyances mainly around the ridiculously fiddly p.e. parts on the fin which on my sons Revell version are pre molded and don’t really look too bad for it either. Again I find myself wishing they’d included a spare exhaust can so I could have an engine on display next to the aircraft. Had hope for an airies one by now but don’t think I’ll wait. Will be done with flats/slats out wings forward & probe out but spoilers closed & speed brakes down. If only there were a decent set of pilot figures available I’d have modelled it on touchdown with everything dangled reversers deployed & spoilers up but the only figures I could find just don’t look good in my opinion. Hopefully engines next then I can commit my test fits with some glue. waiting for some lead on order before sealing up the front More bits involved in this fin than it looks Particularly didn’t enjoy these Here’s hoping I can give this a decent wash & detailing later after having to commit it so early Dry fit move & function seem ok. The pylon rod system is straightforward & works great
  18. Just caught up again after being about 4 weeks progress behind you on mine. Hope mine ends up half as good well done
  19. Thanks, yes I thought I might get away with the mavs but def not the t.e.r on the inboard stations, I thinks that’s a US config. Damn I miss this aircraft!
  20. I had hoped to record building the Flightpath Houchin GPU unit as well as the Harrier, but it was by far the hardest thing I've tried to assemble, and I never really knew when I'd finished each stage as I had to keep re-doing everything. Oh well. Displayed on 2x Coastal kits vinyl bases. Only extras used on the Harrier were some Airscale decals for cockpit gauges and Flying Leathernecks det cord. I’m aware the loadout is inaccurate for an RAF Harrier, particularly Snakeyes with laser Mavs. I’ve never seen an RAF Harrier without fuel tanks but it’s my favourite mount in DCS (those who know, know ;-) so I’ve done a fictitious what-if. I also think the GPU is probably too old a model but was the only type I could find so I’ve gone to town on the ageing, as opposed to the jet which I tried to be subtle on as they all looked quite clean in real life? Lost the 2(?) supplied rear view mirrors at some point probably when fighting the det cord. Thanks for looking.
  21. Late to the party here, but WOW what attention to detail and dedication on display here. Will be following avidly.
  22. Another one, being done sort of in parallel with my 13yo son’s 1/32 Revell GR. Extras purchased/used so far Quickboost seats, Airscale cockpit instruments, Spencer Pollard build guide. Cockpit done. I know the kit seats are excellent but I just can never make p.e belts look good and I think the resin just look way better.
  23. What a superb rendition of that old classic kit, really lovely Mk1 and you wouldn't believe it was the old airfix by looking. I know this because my 13yo self did it hundreds of years ago
