And then it was sunday and time to realease another update.
Details, everywhere!!!
I´ll use the day to right wrongs and create new ones.....
However I started with cleaning the windscreen. Nice , eh?
On to the messy dielectric panel on the spine.
The good thing with painting laquer on top an acrylic varnish is that you simply take a swab, dip it in turpentine and just rub away the offending color. Do varnish you kit when you are happy with something you´ve added it might save your bacon later on!
Mask, paint, unmask ...done!
Then I glued the windshield in place with some white glue.
Added the small red antenna behaind the cockpit....
And a position light, there is one more antenna that goes on the spine but it's so thin I don't want to risk it yet...I´ll save it for final touches, same with the alfa- probe and temperature probe.
NOw it´s time for belly rubbing...added the airbrakes, remember these are bolted shut on the JA but not on the AJ!
Forward and rear IFF antennas. they are not a drop fit so do dry fit and sand until the drop into place.
Added some grime on the landingbay doors as to blend them in with the rest of the fuselage.
Then I glued in the nose wheelbay door actuators.
On with the little supports for the air inlets... they do need a little fiddling before they fit.
Hmm I miss a support that goes on the underside....
Out with the plasticard and make a new one.
And glue them into place.
And when it was time to paint the insides of the remaining wheel well doors I managed to break a door!
A long stream of profanities exited my mouth....
Then I repaired it.......
I don't want to end on an angry note so I finish todays session with a sweet pic.
Cheers!

A small Christmas update - She is up on her own three legs now! - It is not a tailsitter and the landing gear feels very sturdy and can easily take the weight of the model.
I have the armament almost completed as well - I chose to swap them all out for the excellent Eduard Brassin sets. The included weaponry is perhaps the biggest letdown of this kit.
Still have a fair few smaller things to complete before I can call this done - don´t know why but I always seem to drag my feet at this point in my builds...

It´s the first sunday of 2022 and I have an update for you!
Paint? WE HAVE PAINT!!
I begun todays session with repriming the areas I had meddled with before. Darn it looks good.
Then I primed the struts and wheels in Alclad Black Primer....I covered with rich coats as to see if it helped with the printed structure.
Time to get down to business!
I won´t add anything to the everending debate about preshade vs post shade or black basing. This is my prefered method and I like the results I get and therefore I keep doing it this way. Each to his/her own. I won't compare my screwdriver to your pliers... all are tools we use as we see fit.
So this is my way:
I use a gray primer for airframes and I start with painting Tamiya XF-63 German gray along panellines, rivet lines and areas I want in shadow. I don´t use black because the contras is too big. I use a black base on parts and areas with a lot of details like cockpits, wheel wells and landing gear.
My next step is to shoot squiggles all over, in this case I use the same Tamiya XF-63 but I use different coulours for this depending on what will be the top colour. This is my standard Modus Operandi for gray surfaces
It is to break up the top colour and give it depth and structure.
I then finish off the preshading with random squiggles with a light gray, MRP FS36622, again to give the top colour depth and structure.
MRP FS36622 is a good match for the struts as well, slightly lighter than the orginal colour but with washes it will darken. There are many interesting colours on Viggen landing gears later I will go through the struts in detail.
I painted the hubs in glossblack and then shot Alclad White Aluminium on top. Again, looks bright but washes will tone down the shine.
MRP has a really good match for the Swedish Blue-Gray....so on with the top coat!
https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/cc63/Aigore/IMG_5655.JPG
And here's the result. MRP covers really well I only used 3 half cups to paint the entire underside and the drop tank. I am pleased
There, the underside painted, next is a bunch of masking and then time to start on that juicy splinter scheme
By the way, there's a hefty weight in this kit really felt in my left shoulder how straining it was to move it around while painting!
Anyways, Cheers! see you later!

Keeping at it
Well it is sunday and time for another lil´ update
Done some sanding and repairing and repriming.
This side looks good.
The other side needed more putty.... this is far less than I usually putty, odd
I fitted the nosegear well....and well the fit is so tight that I had to hammer it in the last millimeters...no glue required, seems this is a snap fit kit
Then I dry fitted the nose cone, it´s slightly larger than the fuselage..
]
Carveda bit off the edges with my my scraper...
This is OK I might have to putty a little later...we shall see. it is dry fitted still untill I get to the IP cowling and stuff.
With that I´m done for today.
Cheers!

Eenyweeny reacted to tomprobert in Short Sunderland MkII
Evening all,
I've spent a bit more time at the bench this week, as well as seeing a 1:1 scale Sunderland in the flesh - well a Sandringham actually but close enough. We had a weekend down in Southampton and whilst there I sweet-talked the wife into letting me spend an afternoon at the Solent Sky Museum. If you're in the area it's well worth a visit - lots of great exhibits and history about Southampton during the war years but the star attraction for me was of course their rather beautiful Sandringham that used to fly for Ansett:
They even let you dive inside - the interior is a little different to the one I'm building but it was great to have a nose around nevertheless. I imagine this example is a bit more comfortable than the Sunderland!
The main reason for my visit was photograph and have a measure of the beaching gear which is a job I'm going to be tackling soon, and I managed to get plenty of useful reference shots:
On to the model itself, I thought it time to have a closer look at the transparencies. It's important to get the fit of these correct just in case there was some additional structural work to be done before commencing on making their interiors. The turrets were carefully cut from the backing sheet and test fitted to the model. Here's the rear and mid-upper in situ - both fit really well:
The only work needed here was build up the rear turret fairing a little more with card and Milliput.
The cockpit glazing itself fits remarkably well - phew!
For the nose turret, the MkII I'm building still had the early type fitted. This will be installed in the fully retracted position so I have made and added a platform for it to sit on as well as adding the details around the opening itself:
The props have also been painted and lightly weathered:
And look the part when installed on the engines:
And that, boys and girls, brings you up to speed.
Until next time,
Tom

A little bit of progress today. Just worked on the cowling, armored glass and gunsight. Nothing big, but at least a step forward.

Good thing no one has noticed that I put some decals on upside down....or zoomed in
Random update, decided I would replace the headrest.....added the beading around the front and back of the headrest using stretched sprue. I think it's not bad...but let me know what you think!

Eenyweeny reacted to gunpowder in Go BIG or go home! Airfix 1/24 Mosquito....again...
This has to be one of my favourite kits. I have built quite a few. After we lost our little Daughter i built one and sold it for charity , along with an airfix 1/24 spitfire , so i have a very soft spot for it. Both are on this site. This one came courtesy of a facebook auction group and it came with Paragon , UC set , exhaust set , and ammo belts. It also came with Radus belts , airscale instruments , brass gun barrels , fasteners and grils , and Barracuda Wheels , and for a fantastic price. I have just added to it with eduard interior and instrument panel , with plans to add the metal legs from SAC and radiator from Eduard. I have the Tamiya 1/32 Mosquito so i can use that as referrence to scratchbuild some details too. This will be my own most detailed one so far.
Im very much looking forward to the journey. I like the Tamiya 1/32 mosquito , its exquiset , but to me the Airfix one is a bigger challenge and it has more "soul".
Stay tuned , this will be a long one....

Eenyweeny got a reaction from Winnie in Tamiya F4u-1D Corsair build
Well she's very nearly there and I learned a few valuable lessons...
1. Model masters acrylics don't stick to prepared plastic very well and tamiya masking tape will quite happily remove it!
2. Mistakes can be recovered from (see point 1!)
3. I need more practice with decals
4. I need more practice using an airbrush
5. I need to better understand weathering!
Thanks for looking! I would appreciate any constructive criticism...

Another small update!
The starboard side wing has received its base coat of matte aluminum, and after a few sessions of polishing, cursing, respraying, polishing, cursing some more, and then spraying some more, I finally had a nice base coat. I then applied AK Extreme Metals aluminum paint to a few panels and panel lines, and applied Dark Aluminum to the "hot zones" around the exhausts and turbos.

After the metals were complete and were allowed to dry for a little while, I applied the anti-glare panels per Eduard's excellent instructions for 1/48 and 1/72 B-17 anti-glare (This being a Douglas bird it was a little different than Vega and Boeing), and after that, her tell-tale red wing stripes.

After completing painting, I just couldn't help but throw the wing onto the fuselage, lay the soon-to-be-applied wing square-C decal on top, and snap a few photos with the engines and props set in place. She's really starting to look the part!

Eenyweeny reacted to Bstarr3 in Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire MkVIII - FINISHED!
Finally made some further progress. Two points for future modellers of this kit: 1) if you are adding sparkplug wires, be very careful How far out they stick common because they will interfere with Cowling frame and exhaust brackets, which go on last. These parts not fitting well will prevent the cowlings from going on well. 2) Edward pe Anti friction strips on the cowling frames add enough to the thickness to complicate to fit. This combined with one above to cause problems for me how much is shown below. Since I am planning to model this with the cowlings off permanently and the cowling set to the side and a maintenance display, I believe I can get away with painting them separately and will probably do this instead of futzing with it any longer.
Next from here is masking the canopy and applying it. Then a coat of primer over everything and fixing surface imperfections and seam lines once again before we get the final primer coat and get into the painting!
