Thanks for sharing that video Don. Exactly! What an opportunity for you! I'm guessing your formation caused more than a few double-takes from people on the ground in Toronto.

It was such a pleasure talking to you before the arrival!

Here are a few photos from Saturday. The weather looked pretty wicked at times, but the pilots in attendance knew what was possible.

So I made a proper start today.  As I'd already removed the wings from the sprue, I decided that instead of starting in the cockpit as is usual, I would build the wings.  This involves simply adding the four ailerons, one per wing.  Just to add a bit of strength, I thought I'd pin them, as the kit joint is a simple butt joint of the hinges, two per aileron.  So I found a suitable drill bit - 0.4mm - and got out my stock of Albion alloys rod.

The starboard upper aileron is fixed, the others await fixing.  The holes aren't as deeply drilled as the length of the rod suggests, I did them longer than needed for ease of handling, they'll be clipped before fitting.  Notice how the port lower only has one bit of rod?  I broke a drill bit in the hole, so will have to accept a single fixing rod in this one.

Next up, the engine, the 100 Hp Gnome.

Incidentally, as you can see, I've developed a habit of labelling sprues: it does make life easier by reducing the amount of hunting for the right sprue; if they are identified on the sprue (common these days) it's often not very big, and always in the last corner you look at.

First, a quote from Flying Fever by AVM S F Vincent (Jarrolds, 1972), which is an excellent read, although alas long out of print.  "[The date is early 1917.  Major Robert] Smith-Barry, my previous CO in No 60 Squadron, had left almost in disgrace, because he had complained so much and so frequently about the abysmal state of training of the pilots sent out [to France] to fight.  Eventually the War Office took note and said, in effect, 'If you think you can do any better, come home and do so.'  He was given the training squadrons at Gosport which were formed experimentally into the School of Special Flying ...".  History records that Smith-Barry eventually developed a system of flying training which is still in use world-wide today.

The SSF had a number of aeroplanes on its strength, including some Sopwith Pups.  One of these was B2192, and markings for this machine are in the "Gnome" boxing of the WNW Pup.  As I missed out on the original issues of the Pup, I was pleased to be able to add this to my collection.  The scheme chose itself, not least because in the mid-1980s I worked in an office block built on part of the old Gosport airfield; the hangars were very visible from one side of the building.

I don't often do WIPs because I forget to take photos as I go along, but I hope to do better with this.  So here we go, with a boxtop shot.

And the rather striking scheme I'll be doing: CDL underneath, white on top, all covered with black stripes.

Whilst WNW provide decals for the fuselage stripes, I'll be attempting to paint them, along with the wing roundels.  I'd do the fuselage roundels as well, but my circle cutter does not allow a small enough radius of cut.  Wish me luck!!

That's the first Pup: the second, to go with it, is in the arms of "Henry"; the plan is to put him on the base with the completed model.

I think the dog is just about small enough to qualify as a pup.

I've already opened the box and completely ruined the value of the kit by removing the wings and fuselage halves from the sprue, so here we go, watch this space.

It does not matter whether I am right or not because I have no say or power in any of these issues.

    but...

If "WNW is dead", how can one explain the presence at the Wairarapa Air Festival of a stand wearing the WNW name, selling WNW models, staffed by people wearing WNW T-shirts, with a banner depicting Peter Jackson ? This stand bore no sign of finality or even desperation. Prices were the same as usual, no prices were "reduced to sell". There was no sign of "everything  must go" or "closing down sale" anywhere. A lot of time and effort was spent here and elsewhere in pushing the message that "PJ" would not allow his brand or image to be misused by anyone else. How could this stand possibly happen without WNW as a company and Peter Jackson as a person who still cares? The simple existence of that stand is proof of life!

Any true fan of WNW should be very happy to see WNW show signs of life.

I hope you like it so far Al, this is my favorite plane and build.  The Brit Phantom is giving me a breather and sorting new 3D printed parts out.  I plan on finishing off the Phantom before I come back to this.  The support on my Phantom build has overwhelmed me and I feel a real need to see it through to the end...although I am gagging to get back to this!

Hi Anthony, just been going through your build. Looks sublime. You know when you said in your reply to my recent post on the Tse-Tse that there were a few tweaks to make the model better! Well I am blown away by your attention to detail and your workmanship. I only hope I do justice to the Molins, but your standard is a hard act to follow.

Not LSP...but thought I would share.

Tamiya base kit, aftermarket 2-stage Merlin engines (Jason Chatwin's original castings, recently reproduced by Brengun -BRL48124).  Resin conversion pieces were great.  Needed an in-flight bomber Mosquito to keep my FB in-flight Mosquito company on my work desk.

Fun conversion, learned some valuable lessons in re-scribing and once again realized I need to improve my canopy masking.
    Prop Blur props utilized.
Aeromaster 48-552 markings corrected for ML907 (HS-B, not GB-B as the markings state).  Pilot and Nav figure in there if you can see them.  I realized on this build just how much cockpit work you don't see when you close up the fuselage.

    Cheers

Well apart from the immortal Spitfire which I've built the entire Tamiya 1/32 range of different marks. My other passion is the De Havilland Mosquito which again I built the 1/32 MK VI Tamiya version which was an absolute joy to build

I wanted a little bit more of a challenge so keeping to the Mosquito theme I decided to have a go and 'kit bash' a 1/24 scale Airfix Mosquito MK VI and turn it into the MK39. After doing a fair bit of research I can understand why  there is not a current conversion available for this in any scale, as it's not really a 'looker'. Once I had some basic plans I scaled them up to 1/24 scale on my PC ready or some surgery!!.
Getting the kit is not much of an issue as I already have one in my stash (haven't we all;) and so it it was a case of converting it. Sounds easy.... NOT! I'll have to change the engines, props to 4 bladed, canopy, reposition the side entrance door, scratch build an entire new nose section and add a cupola and detail the interior for the winch operator.
First thing is to drill out the hole for the rear Cupola. Old rule of measure twice cut once.

Once cleaned up I was quiet satisfied with the result and was in the right place!

Further adaption of the fuselage is required as the side reinforcement strip on the port side was removed on the MK39 and was transferred to either side of the rear fuselage to where the fourth crew member exit hatch is (Yes this Mozzie had a crew of 4!)

The next was to fit the front side door and fill in the seams

Well that's all for now and hopefully this will work out. If not I will need to get a bigger 'spares' box!
