    Hi

@Kev: sorry about the server mishap. I noticed just after I posted and then failed in correcting.
Anyway second try and hoping it works.

    @Antony: Nice to be here!

I usually break my build down into smaller units and finish each unit before posting. Being a Brit and living in Germany since 71 I already posted the main section of the fuselarge at Wettringer a German site. Currently I'm translating so more will come soon.

Here are the first images of

    Hi Anthony,

8.5 mm not sure if its exact, but I remember aligning with the risen area on the body and the nacelles.

I measured from the inside of the leading edges.

mlcflhs got a reaction from Anthony in NZ in 75 Sqn RNZAF Mosquito Detailed Build
    Hi Anthony,

I remember doing this bit on my Mossie. Both time consuming and mind boggling.
Lucky for me as I'm building a prototype of the Mossie with the bits I want I was not so dependent on getting it 100% right.

Building a 75 Sqn RNZAF Mosquito Detailed Build it would definitely be more difficult getting it right.

One thing I have noticed is the vast number of variations of the Mosquito that took to the air. I have a feeling no two where alike.

    Cheers,
    Mike

PS: My radiators are built in now, just starting to work on the piping.

    Hello All!

after three weaks (I like that PUN ! ) of frustration and challenges I finally managed to get the tanks more of less as I planned.

    But First:
    Thanks for the compliments!
@Mark: What ever you do don't quit the hobby. I'd feel bad for the rest of my life. I must admit that I probably made 3 sets of tanks before I was satisfied and the wife was p... off because of all the dust. I've seen plenty who build a lot better than I do and in shorter time.

    @Kev: Not so great only 1/24 !

    Anyhow here it comes.

    Unit 8 Wing Tanks
I made the tanks from old bits of balsa wood I had laying in the cellar. So sawing and sanding and dust. The aluminum belts were made from an energy drink can. Lots cheaper than buying! The rest is steel wire and polystyrene. The main task was getting the color of the outer coat of the tanks right. The tanks were made of aluminum originally and covered with Lynatex, at least that's what I can make out. Perhaps Anthony can confirm this.

Two photos of each set of Tanks

The aluminum belts were intentionally added before the paint fully dried and then the Lynatex was painted on building up the layers. The idea was to give the impression that the belts are cutting into the Lynatex.
Not sure if that's authentic but it did seem to be a good idea to me.

I regretfully ran out of decals and am currently waiting for my transfer paper to arrive to be able to finish of the last tank seen in the second picture.

As always after making the first set of photos I decided I needed to do a rework on the belts. I have the impression that they look better in real.

I hope this will be a bit quicker than the tank build, but I have the feeling it won't.

As usual comments and questions always welcome.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I have scraped away part of the hinge / wing construction to add poly strips once the wing is assembled.
This in my eyes is necessary to be able to assemble the hinges.

Hi Kev, you're very welcome, glad you like the idea.

Hello Pascal, apologies for the late response.
I did n't take any photos of the construction stage of the bits behind the aluminium coloured bulkhead, sorry. Here's another view of the item though.

It was probably not as complex as it appears. I punched out holes in a suitable strip of plastic extrusion then glued them together to make a square behind the fuselage former. I used more strip to span diagonally from corner to corner one way then bridged the gap the other way with two shorter lengths to make the cross shape in the middle.

Other bits of plastic extrusion were used to make the base of the aeriel mast and the retainer for the shoulder strap wires. Some small bits of folded metal foil were fashioned to create some bracing. I hope that explains the construction method.

    Work continues on the pilot.
The choice to represent a modern warbird raised a few issues. Most reference photos show the pilots on flying suits rather than full WWII style garb. Most (if not all) aftermarket pilots depict wartime pilots so I had to make my own little dude.
I took a 1/35th scale German tanker and filed off the base of his tunic, filed in a suggestion of a flying suit and tee-shirt before adding a parachute made from wine bottle foil and some etched buckles by HGW.

I can't be sure how accurate all of the straps are but I tried to copy reference images as closely as possible.
I also finished up the pilot's head and fixed it at a jaunty angle.

I gouged out the lenses of the goggles and replaced them with clear acetate. That was a tough job and I'm not convinced how successful it was. In hindsight I should have probably left them as they were and painted them glossy. I also added a mike on an arm from the helmet. Probably not perfectly accurate but I feel it gives a more civilain rather than military feel to the figure.
The next stage will be to fix him in the seat and plan the harness straps. There's a bit of jiggery pokery required because I hope to have the figure posed with his arm out of the cockpit which is taking a bit of planning.

Thanks for stopping by and having a look.

Scribed in the ground power socket cover and a quick splash of Tamiya wash so you can see it.

If anyone is interested the door itself is 5.1mm long and 4'5mm wide in 1/24 scale

The panel line is scribed evenly, its just my sloppy wash in there that makes the line seem a little uneven.

    Cheers

I look forward to seeing your radiators, I have hit the wall with mine, but will overcome it.

    Hi,

Back after 4 weeks vacation and a fair bit of drilling.

This weekend I managed to get the wing to a state that I think if suitable to start detailing. Apart from adding a maintenance hatch for the ailerons. I placed a spare in the tank bay and also decided to do a reasonable amount of chopping around on the Alley Cat hinges to make them fully functional.

All fastener holes have be backed by .025 poly.

I have made a rig to drill .4mm holes inside them later, so that I can add .6mm rivets inside once the final coat has been added.

Anyhow  here are some pics. "Hope you enjoy them"

    Hi Anthony,

Just got back from vacation and now I see that you've already given me some extra work for my mosquito. .
After drilling 250 holes in the tank and radiator panels of my Mosie for the DZUS fasteners I will probably take up your bumps and try to hammer them into my tin panels.

Keep up the good work its giving me ideas as well .

    Cheers
    Mike

PS: Just scanned through all photos I have. The bumps immediately next to the nacelles I have seen on other Mosquito's as well. The one which is white in the last photos I seem to miss.
Do you know why its there?
    Anything technical underneath?

Working on the landing gear today. Woah, that's a fiddly thing! I made the rods of copper wire and started this way:

To achieve an acceptable result the first step is straightening the wire. Pull it carefully until there is a noticeable, slight yielding in the material. This only works once! The wire will look like this now:

And then do what you want: Bent, pressed. glued:

Cleaned up the edges with sandpaper and then carefully glued in place:

    More to come soon...
