Simmo.b got a reaction from Zero77 in FELIXTOWE F2a Late Done!!
I guess I should start by saying that I have no commercial connection with Aviattic Decals, after I posted some in progress pics of this build on Facebook Richard from Aviattic kindly offered to send me some samples of their latest product "Clear Doped Linen" decals to try.
I have used their lozenge decals on my LVG build and I found them to be really nice as well as easy to use so was keen to give this new item a go.
Aviattic's decals are tough and 'Simmo' proof! They can be moved around, re-positioned even lifted off and re-applied without tearing unlike Uschie woodgrain decals (which I love) which will tear at the drop of a hat!
Prep starts with a coat of Mr Surfacer 1000 from the rattle can, I then masked off the ribs and sprayed a VERY light pre-shade with Gunz 'flesh' before removing the tape, freehanding a little more pre-shade then toning down the effect even more with the Mr surfacer.
To apply the decals I made patterns by first covering the respective panel with Tamiya tape, a sharp pencil was used to trace the outline of the panel onto the tape which was then lifted and applied to some thin cardboard (a cereal box is good).
I make the pattern from cardboard as it is unwise to lay tape directly onto the decal. The cardboard pattern is placed onto the decal sheet and traced around, cut out the decal, immerse in warm water and apply!!
My photos do not do justice to the effect that is achieved, you can see the fine fabric weave running through the decal, suffice to say I will not be painting CDL again, I'm hooked on these decals!!

As you can see I still need to trim the decal from the rear gunners position (ran out of No 11 blades) and finish up the fuse (more painting, Uschie wood decals and weathering etc) but she is getting there!!

Hi all, I made a New Years resolution when this awesome kit arrived that I would try to get her done this year, will I make it? who knows but with my promise in mind I have made a start.
Things may change but at the moment I am doing this option.

I was tempted by the colourfull birds but really like the idea of seeing all of the components that these birsd were constructed with, wood, metal cdl etc.
I began by snipping off and cleaning up most of the components that make up the interior and giving them an undercoat of Tamiya surface primer, then the parts to be black were sprayed 'scale black' (a mix of Tamiya black and red brown).
The black was masked and the parts to be finished in wood effect sprayed Gunz radome with some parts picked out in Gunz flesh.

The side frames were placed against the fuse sides before being sprayed radome, this left a negative image on the fuse sides which acted as the guide for a preshade of scale black to go under the eventual Uschie wood decale that I intend to apply to this area.

Thee finished effect should look pretty cool!

Thanks for looking, more progress soon I hope!!

    Back again!!

Just a small update but a major step forward, the fuselage has been closed up and the seams filled.
I gave the kit a coat of Mr Surfacer White 1000 straight from the can, needed several light coats to build up the opacity but a great product.
I then masked up the stringers on the turtle deck before shooting a pre-shade of Gunz Radome and applying the same colour to the wood areas which were later oil grained.
I will be giving the Aviattic clear doped linen decals a try for the cdl areas on this kit hence the prep, if the cdl decals are anything like the quality/ease of use of Aviattics lozenge decals then should look nice!
Anyway pictures tell a 1000 words.....

The interior is just about done, just some cross-bracing to add once the fuselage halves are joined.
As most will never see the light of day once the kit is completed I wanted some decent pics to record that I actually added it!! So Eric G popped over with his gucci light system and took the following pics for me...Thanks mate!!
The control lines are ez line and the throttle cables are the correct diameter piano line I sourced from my LHS, far easier to add than ez line, just measure the length, join 4 peices together and add.

Vandy,The decals are available direct from aviattic www.aviattic.com
Or from Hannants, I don't have mine yet but you can see the effects on the aviattic site, the decals are translucent so mask and spray your "shadow roundel" then apply the decal over the top shpuld look great.
When the decals come I will dicument their use here so watch this space
    Cheers

Some more progress, I applied a coat of raw umber over the previously undercoated parts with the exception of the forward floor and the fusalage sides which recieved ushie woodgrain decals.
The end result looks pretty good but will hardly be seen through the cockpit openings...modelling for God I've heard it called!!

    the fuse sides uschie deecalled

    Sides with frames

    Floor bits

    And the other 'woodie bits'

The kit is from Weiner Scale models and is resin with PE and turned brass parts, the masts are real wood.
I added a crew including the ships dog from the same manufacturer,
Thanks to Eric G for the pics
