Hi Don, If these are the cowl flaps: This set is designed for the F4U-1/A/D series. The F4U-4 has ten movable cowl flaps, five on each side, with a "dead" cowl flap located at the top center of the cowl flap ring. My measurements of the War Eagle F4U-4 determined that the movable cowl flaps are all about the same size, ~12" long (front-to-back ) and ~13 1/2" high (measured along the curve). A thin sheet metal filler fills the gap between each on the moveable cowl flaps. A Steven Stohr photo from the ARC Walkaround: You're on your own for a correction for the kit. Don f

Tamiya F4U-1A as a BPF Corsair IV - 6 May 15 update

Hi Nick, Thank you for the compliment. I have no updates. My workroom was dismantled for renovations and all modeling materials are still boxed up. Keeping the house tidy and uncluttered for showings means that I won't be able to unpack until the end of November. I'm hoping to resume this project in December, barring any holiday craziness or relocation. Don -

Kev, Here's one example of the lettering. The oxygen bottle is installed under a cut down F4U seat and frame. I have no idea why. Don

Superb work! Hopefully not too late for your painting, here's a comment regarding the color of the oxygen tank: According to the parts list for the demand diluter oxygen system, the oxygen bottle was to be painted light green with the words "Aviator's Breathing Oxygen" stenciled on the outside. An ominous warning in the text states, "Do not recharge oxygen cylinders with carbon dioxide." Especially meaningful as the F4U-1 had two CO2 bottles installed in the lower left side of the cockpit. The usual location of the oxygen bottle was the aft right rear of the cockpit. Here's Vector's new 1/48 resin reinforced F4U-1 turtledeck. Hopefully, Vector will produce same in 1/32 to save us the time and trouble of modifying the kit parts. The images below can be used as a go-by for modifying the 1/32 kit parts. Don

If you like the result of your paint mix be happy. Don't be too concerned about the salmon color. This was just one variation of tinted zinc chromate primer, to be produced by the aircraft manufacturer, by mixing "2 oz. of Indian Red mixed in 2 gals. of toluol or equivalent (AN-T-8b toluol substitute, similar to lacquer thinner) solvent. This mixture was to be used to reduce 1 gal. of zinc chromate package material (un-reduced zinc chromate primer)." So no match too any color standard. The final color could be whatever was mixed that day and could have varied on the same aircraft depending on many application factors. And besides, the aircraft was underwater for decades. Don't worry. Don -

Superb work. The Tamiya F4U-1A kit has the ignition manifold and distributors you need. This kit supplies both types, square cast and round. And both types of distributors. You need parts T7, T8 (distributors) and T9 (ignition manifold). If you don't have the F4U -1A kit, perhaps someone has these as spares for swap. Barricuda Studios has a nice resin upgrade set if that's what you want. From the Barracuda site: Don -
Tamiya F4U-1A as a BPF Corsair IV - 6 May 15 update

Keeping up with the flurry of Corsair project updates from the other very skilled builders, here's a few notes and progress of my project. This is the first pass at removing the wing landing light. After carefully putty around the light, my tiny square of sandpaper on a stick was used to sand away the filler around the light, preserving as much detail as possible. More contrast to show the remaining filler, not too bad so far. Another round of filling and careful sanding and it will look better. While handling the wing center section, I noticed a shallow rectangular cut out at the forward edge of the MLG wells. This opening was fixed as follows: While priming and touching up blue paint, the gray primer was used to on the representation of the canvas covers in the wheel wells. I think that these covers were likely painted with the wheel wells on the actual aircraft. However, the little bit of color is welcome in the solid blue wheel wells. Jim Corley, via Jerry Wells, kindly sent me a number of photos of the Y duct. This allowed me to add details. Here's the topside of the duct with the alternate air door. And the bottom: Unnecessary detail as it turned out. Most of the topside detail cannot be seen when installed. It was fun to make. I don't like PE so all is plastic bits. And the duct installed, aligned with the kit location of the intercoolers: All that effort for what can be seen through a small opening in the underside. I decided to dodge the work and build no more detail into the engine accessory section. Now on to the the assembly of the wing center section and detailing the wheel wells. Don -
Oh no! The Dull Dark Green issue. To my eye, a 1:1 mix of Humbrol #88 and black makes a reasonable match to the Dull Dark Green color chip that Dana Bell provided. Dana recommended using Medium Green with black added. He didn't say how much black. So if you have the #88 or some Medium Green you can make your own DUll Dark Green, if you wish. After shading and highlighting, I don't think it will matter how close the match is. I've got only one image of the 1:1 mix applied against gray. Here it is: Don

Nice work! Admire your skill and tenacity taking those not for the kit parts and making them work. Cockpit color: Dark Green

Tamiya Corsair - too easy to model a -1D from the 1A?

Tamiya Corsair - too easy to model a -1D from the 1A?

Here's an F4U-1D cockpit from the Dash -1: The rocket station distributor box is visible on the right side below the windscreen frame the rocket launch switch on the left side. The F4U-1A kit does have some cockpit parts in it, if you want to make the changes. Part R39 appears to be the -1D instrument panel with P12 as the clear part. R45 looks like the Rocket Station Distributor Box. R1 looks like the bomb switch box mounted on the right side instrument cowl. R4 appears to be the gunsight. Leave off D10, the vapor dilution bottle. Some other minor pieces that I don't see in the box, such as the Rocket Launch Switch on the left side near the wing flap control. David H., Obscureco used to make the 1/32 paddle blade prop. They dropped it from their lineup years ago. If a rocket equipped version is desired, four sets of the Mk. 5 launchers like these will be needed. Any sources? Don -

You may have this info already. Snake, who needs to know RNZAF Corsair question Sat Jul 6 21:54:16 2002 205.188.201.192 I've found a pic of what APPEARS to be a RNZAF F4U-1A (bars in the canopy), repainted in overall Glossy Sea Blue (no white or light color is visible on fuselage underside, gear doors, etc.). Number is 491. Does this sound on track so far? So the question is, would this aircraft have had the RNZAF markings on both wings, or just upper left/lower right like US birds? Got a built, painted Otaki Corsair and kit decals just waiting for the answer.... Peter Mossong RNZAF F4U's Sun Jul 7 02:39:35 2002 203.109.252.2 Snake, roundels on all wing surfaces - the only RNZAF a/c to follow the US style were the SBD-5's. Working on my Corsair pages at present. Cheers, Pete M. Steve Westerby It's a "D" Sun Jul 7 00:02:53 2002 219.88.44.83 Hi Snake That aircraft is NZ5419, an F4U-1D. For your info, here are the serial ranges, no's and models for the Corsairs we got during WWII: MODEL QTY SERIALS F4U-1A 237 NZ5201-NZ5396 NZ5461-NZ5463 NZ5465 & NZ5487 NZ5501-NZ5536 F4U-1D 127 NZ5397-NZ5460 NZ5464 NZ5466-NZ5486 NZ5537-NZ5577 FG-1D 60 NZ5601-NZ5660 NZ5419 was delivered new in overall Gloss Sea Blue and had roundels and bars on both wings, top and bottom. HTH Steve (True Blue Kiwi) Snake, proceeding with this Many thanks, Steve! Sun Jul 7 00:23:08 2002 64.12.103.51 Thanks, Steve! If it's a D, it's an early one with the two extra bars in the canopy. That probably means it didn't have the rocket stubs, either, so no reason I can't finish this GSB-painted Otaki F4U-1A that way! (Had other plans for it orginally, but the decals didn't work out ) Thanks again! Steve Westerby No worries... Sun Jul 7 00:49:14 2002 219.88.44.83 and yes, it was an early F4U-1D. Only two of the "F4U-1D's" had rockets stubs fitted (retro) although the wiring was there on all of them. None of the F4U-1D's had the footstep in the wing flap either. The FG-1D's all had rocket stubs and the footstep in the flap. The only Corsairs we had without the extra canopy frames were the Goodyear ones. Hope that clears up that one for you. Cheers Steve Peter Mossong Kiwi F4U Sat Jan 24 02:42:12 2004 203.109.205.124 Hi Don. I had replied to your question on the mark of F4U shown in the photo, so I'll repost it for you now. NZ5468 was the only 68 I could pick from a/c serving with N0.3 Servicing unit. It was a replacement and arrived on strength in February 1945. It was lost after an AA hit, but the pilot survived. Bu.No. was 50411 Manufacturers No.5658. Most of the RNZAF's F4U-ID's were from the initial production batches, and retained the barred canopy, and many still had the narrow 13' prop and no underwing pylons. All of the early batches were in the 'Tri-Tone' scheme. Many of the late production Corsairs we received could also be seen with narrow bladed props, as the servicing units would use what they could find - even to robbing bits from the US 'graveyards' to keep the aircraft serviceable. Regarding your question on the "Ocean Blue" repaints, no record was kept of how many were repainted - even some recently received Glossy Sea Blue aircraft were repainted as well as some badly faded "Tri-Tones'. The Official name for this paint was (NZ) Blue Sea Grey, and was a close match to the old USN Blue Grey ( much of which paint was also used on our Corsairs). Hope this helps, and if you need any more info, don't hesitate to email me. Cheers, Peter Mossong http://rnzaf.hobbyvista.com RNZAF F4U-1 belly windows. January 17 2015 at 5:57 PM Peter Mossong (Login 3ipmsnz) HyperScale Forums from IP address 222.154.187.50 As a follow-up to the earlier discussion regarding Corsair belly windows, using Dana Bell's Bu.No.50066 as being the first off the Vought production line to have the belly window eliminated, I've gone through my list of those issued to the RNZAF by Bu.No. and come up with the following list of serials that may well have had the belly window fitted! NZ5212; NZ5213; NZ5218; NZ5247; NZ5250; NZ5252; NZ5253; NZ5258>NZ5267; NZ5274>NZ5282; NZ5287>NZ5291; NZ5294; NZ5298>NZ5307; NZ5309>NZ5320; NZ5323>MZ5328; NZ5330>NZ5346; NZ5348>NZ5354; NZ5487>NZ5505; and NZ5523>NZ5535. All were F4U-1's. Many would have probably been overpainted in service. As an interesting footnote, 50066 was issued to the RNZAF as NZ5506! NZ5506 5313 F4U-1 Bu50066. I look forward to further 'gems' from your research, and the release of your book covering the later F4U-1's....till then, I'm holding off building my 1:32 Tamiya kit, although it's bloody hard to resist! Cheers, Pete M. Re: New FAA (among other) 1/48 Corsair decals Posted By: Peter Mossong <mossong@clear.net.nz> Date: Friday, 6 December 2002, at 1:28 a.m. In Response To: New FAA (among other) 1/48 Corsair decals (Dan Salamone) Hi Guys, just a further addition to this thread. I have just looked at Hannants 'Sky' sheet, and the markings they have given are for New Zealand based training aircraft as the operational Corsairs did not have squadron codes. The roundel colour for most Corsairs and operational WW2 RNZAF aircraft was, when fresh, approx Fs.35056 ( Humbrol No.25 is a perfect match!). Could vary in service from Fs.35109 > 35190. This paint was a local mix that approximated the pre-war RAF Bright Ident. Blue, not the darker WW2 Ident Blue/US Insignia Blue (as was used also by Australia). A lighter colour was used for many aircraft based in New Zealand, and was approx Fs.25095 ( although a few operational aircraft appeared with roundels of this colour). Cheers, Peter Mossong. Possible error with RNZAF insignia Posted By: Anders Svennevik <anders.svennevik@telia.com> Date: Monday, 2 December 2002, at 10:47 a.m. In Response To: New FAA (among other) 1/48 Corsair decals (Dan Salamone) The RNZAF Corsairs carried national insignia in 6 positions. 4 were overpainted US insignia and 2 were new. The bars in the US insignia are NOT centered about the middle of the 'roundel', they are slightly above the center. The additional 2 new insignia often had the bars centered round the middle of the 'roundel'. All the Sky insignia appear to be centered round the middle. The illustrations in the book I mentioned show the different insignia. The RNZAF site at www.kithobbyist.com has an interesting article on the subject. Anders -

Thanks gents for the kind words. Truly, the anxiety of waiting for the next release. And of course, soon as you get far along on your conversion of the kit, but not quite done robbing other kits, AM stuff, making parts, along comes the new Tamiya release with all you needed. Not much would have been required for them to add the wings tips and same for the parts for the -1D, some are already in the box. Don.
