  1. Looks great, Pete! I have my eye on that kit one day. You have inspired me!
  2. Thanks. Yesterday, I finished the shoulder belts. I may experiment with pastels or oils to "dirty" them prior to attachment to seat. I told myself to avoid getting bogged down with too much detail but the kit did not contain any seat belts. You really cannot get away with not having some kind of belts especially in these larger scales. The good news is these Airscale belts are very well made and look great. I have one extra set and I may want to get a couple more for my stash of P-40s. Actually, the more modern kits are what is pulling me back to larger scales...because all that needed detail is often baked right into the plastic! I had an old Revell P-40 that would have required reworking just about everything to look good. That was too much work. This Hasegawa is a fantastic kit even at almost 20 years old now.
  3. Progress is slow but I try to do one thing each day if I can. These are the lap belts from the kit offered by our own Airscale! They are a tough colored paper and metal etch parts. Assembly of these took roughly 1 to 2 hours to do. It is really not that hard but requires extra patience. Each move of the fingers takes consideration and planning. Stitching was accomplished with my 1/72 scale rivet wheel tool. I may try to use thinned oil paint to try and add depth so you can see it better. I did lose the latch piece to the carpet monster....but I found it right after I took the photo! I'll take a photo of the finished seat once I have done the shoulder belt assembly.
  4. Sweet! Man, you are lapping me big time with progress. Your NMF looks spot-on!
  5. You are doing great work and fast too! One comment on your prop. I believe those Spitfire props were wooden with a brass leading edge piece. You did such a good job, I would just leave it alone tho....
  6. Some progress to show today. I sprayed all of the parts that will be bronze green at the same time (except canopy interiors). Humbrol 226 is a very pleasing bronze green to my eye. Painting parts on the sprue does not make me a ten year old kid...especially if a good company like Hasegawa designs the gates well.
  7. I don't have one...yet. Right now my bench is in a basement room with no windows. I spray acrylics most of the time and I have a box fan hanging on the wall next to me. It faces away and pulls air away from me as I spray pretty well. On the rare occasions I use oil base, I have put on a respirator mask I got at Home Depot. It seems to do well enough. I will add a booth that will vent to the outside. It will take some effort to make a hole in the brick outside but it is mandatory for my safety and the family too.
  8. I wonder if I'm enough months old to buy this kit?
  9. In all these years, I never tried Humbrol in my airbrush. Just did a little session and had forgotten how nice enamels lay down. Acrylics are fine but... oil base is just easy to get a nice coat. I was in a basement room without windows. There was a box fan next to me to move the air away. Also, I had a respirator on my face. I knew is was working because I could not smell any odors. Live on - enamels!!!
  10. Think of the amazing enablers...along with skills you already have. Availability of drawings online. Advances in desktop CAD tools. Amazing and affordable 3D printing. This project and its eye-watering swiftness is a testament to what can be done in our times. Model building is not dying...it's being reborn!
  11. Here is a real seat that matches what is in the kit. I can't afford it...but will post the link here for reference. I'm now sure it is plywood so I can weather the edges that way. eBay P-40N new build seat for sale
  12. I found at least one photo where they have "plugs" covering the gun ports. Perhaps a training group didn't need them? Could some of the birds have had guns for strafing training??? I have not seen that in photos before. I'm thinking of doing this as it may be easier than painting the guns on the kit part. I'll just sand them down to look like the photo. See photo: Wartime photo of training group P-40N with no guns
  13. Wow, another great project! I also like the Airacobra. It is a clean little ship. Sadly, that RAF group that flew them on that one combat op got their ass handed to them, badly. Even so, your P-39 will look great in RAF colors. I am in awe of your progress already! the photoetch coming from factory drawings is incredible too. I'm curious about how you size it? Due to the model skin being thicker than scale, do you have to make certain parts a little smaller than 1/18??? That has to be tricky. Carry on....but please finish the Tomahawk! p.s. I received the two USAAF seat belt sets yesterday. Thanks! One will go into my P-40 in the group build for "nose art" going on now.
  14. I'm past this hurdle. They put the joint at least where it's easy to get to and sand.
  15. Slow going. This fuselage joint is sanded now but I need to replace the engraved lines next. It has been a little more difficult than I had hoped. I did learn a lot that I'll apply to the next one. Superglue was the only way to go without any shrink but it sands hard.
  16. Wow! That is great work! Beautiful cockpit detail and nice, smooth finish work!
  17. Cool project! (BTW. I am using Flickr to host my photos as well. I use my laptop tho.)
  18. I agree! The recent Trumpeter kit as I have read is very good in fit quality as it is up to modern standards...but there are shape issues galore. There is no excuse for that in this information age...and I won't buy it. The now 20 year old Hasegawa may have some of these tail fit issues but the overall shapes are very good. I'll take it any day. Eduard released the P-40N under their "Eduart" label with Hasegawa plastic and resin extras along with a very nice big decal sheet. It was expensive but with all the extras it was a DEAL. In addition, they added the extra pieces for short tail as well as both canopy types. So in that one kit you could build your choice of P-40E, P-40K (long tail), P-40M, and N. I only picked up one of those and regret not getting more of them...
  19. Thanks! Hey my vision is bad enough at this age. Alcohol would only make this model a wreck!
  20. This little shim made a big difference on fitting the left side fuselage parts. It's a little like being a diamond cutter eh? I didn't study the right side enough so the fit on that side was not that great...sand it!
  21. Got room for another Warhawk in this group build? This one is a training group P-40N with "Parrot head" art. No this has nothing to do with Jimmy Buffet...but I do like his music BTW. I will try to finish on time and to do that will have to try and avoid AMS disease... Dang it I'm a month late starting too.... Perhaps I will play some Jimmy Buffet while I build eh? "Cheeseburgers in paradise!....."
  22. Does it have to be done by Aug. 31? I'm slow...
