I actually have a Revell and Rutman B kit. I'm seriously considering doing it. I'm currently comparing fuselages

Im no Mustang expert, but they are relatively different beasts all around. Going either direction would probably be quite a bit of work.

    Today's the day!

Good fit (very snug) and yep, they look great.  I'll post a photo of one of the exhausts positioned in the Revell kit's fuselage slot on the product page shortly.  It will be unpainted and un-primed but you can see how it fits.

    Hi,

I painted the underside NMF on mine, except for the cowling underside. Looking at other P-47Ds of the 56th (in particular David Schilling's aircraft) helped a lot.

    Hello folks,

well, here I am, my first RFI thread on my first ever LSP build I used the gray and rainy sunday to finish the last details on my Arado Ar 196 B. It took me quite a while to finish, I started it last september. It has A LOT of flaws (which I have hopefully hidden well with my subar photography in my impromptu 'towel studio' ), but it looks quite nice from a meter away
AM I used was the Eduard Interior Set and the HpH resin canopy. I really learned a lot on this build and sometimes even had fun between all the cussing Hope you like it!

So fast forward almost 5 years and I dug this one out of its box and finished it just in time for this years Model Expo in Melbourne.

Sorry for no further WIP pictures but I needed to get it done. I built this one out of the box with the only addition being the rigging. I used the Yellow Wings Stencil data, roundels and Thunderbirds logo with all other elements of the scheme being masked and painted.

I will do some studio photos once the dust of expo clears.

Would be cool to meet some of those guys. Yes, it is in fact a LOT of work. We dont have that many members in our Foot Crook chapter, but although I disagree with some of those guys on scale, type, premise, ect, ect for their models, I will give them ALL the credit for hard work started to make 2 IPMS Nationals come to fruition in the latest years.

It was indeed a lot of work, and the club had to call on almost ALL resources (members) to help out to get things done, as there is vendor room security, model room security, liaisons for the vendors, Id checkers, ticket takers, raffle workers, money takers, T-shirt guys, ect ect.
Bottom line is Tim is pretty spot on that it takes a very dedicated club to put the Nationals on, and it really does help if they have experience doing it.   The bidding can be one of the hardest parts, as it takes people who have done it to know what it takes to run a NATs smoothly and enter a winning bid, with what the IPMS brass are looking for in a host city.

Fortunately our NATs ran as smooth as we could have ever hopped for, both physically and fiscally, so that leaves the door open for future Nationals events.   Still for as much as I love my home town, and for as much as I honestly loved all the work and involvement it took to put the show on, Id love to go someplace within driving distance for a NATs event so I could take some larger models.

I have two 1/32 P-38s in the works. There is no way in blazes those are getting in any carry-on, so nothing coming with me except a bunch of custom shirts. Plus, I doubt that a I'll actually finish anything by then, anyway. Too busy during summer.

BTW, I spoke to the IPMS Seattle chapter president, and he said they considered bidding on Nats a couple years ago, but it takes a very committed core group of a dozen people for about 3 years to make it happen, and they just couldn't get the membership to commit to it. It's definitely not as easy to do out here as it is back east or in the midwest, as there are fewer clubs/members to share the work. It would take a group effort between every club in the NW, probably, and I don't know how that would work. I'm not even an IPMS member anymore, as the closest club, Seattle, is 2.5 hrs drive away.

A bunch of the Seattle guys will be at Nats, though, so we might get to know some of them.

    evening folks

been away a bit lately, but have got a little done in the last few days

first, thanks to the direction to the aircorps librarary reference to all the external markings on drawing 106-00010 I have finally finished the decal sheet (well except for Don Lopez's name & kills marking but I need to find the right font..)

and I started to make up the fuselage structures - you can see here in a pic Denzil from Aircorps kindly provided all the internal formers & stations along the cockpit walls - these I have made in PE and they are designed to sit in some 'U' shaped brass channel which acts as the main fuselage longerons top & bottom they all slot into..

..I started with a simple first pair (station 89.75) - each of these is a full thickness PE part, laminated with a more detailed one, and now I am adding the strip that runs along the internal edge to make them look like pressed parts...

..each of the parts of station 104 is more substantial, these are a core but laminated both sides, plus another lower laminate for the strengthening plate - seen here with the brass longeron & some strip ali..

..station 104 is actually two sets of formers joined together so here is each half of the left side with some brass spacers..

    ..and assembled..

..the right hand fuselage side of station 104 is the spare lamp storage which has a little hatch, so the base of the hatch is in PE and the hatch cover will be added later after painting - sprue was threaded through holes to make the bigger bolts at the bottom (these still need cleaning up)...

    ..and assembled..

the PE panel has cross head screws in the artwork and it is testament to PPD's quality that I can actually see them with my opti-visor

..another bit of PE was made for one of the mounts for a cockpit component - it starts life flat, and again the PE artwork takes the drawings and just adds in each elevation so you end up with what it would look like unfolded flat..

..quite dificult to fold as it has folds on all four sides - this was the best I could do..

..so the first parts start to take shape..

..and this is sort of how they will go to make up the cockpit sides..

..thats all for now - a LONG way to go

Exactly. Its a pain to have to fly with any models, but in my case it just so happens that the two 32nd models I plan on bringing are super DUPER small, and will fit in the American Airlines "personal item" configuration which is less than 18" x 14" x 8".   My box for the two will be about 16" x 12" x 5" as basic economy passengers are only allowed 1 personal item, and all other bags must be checked.

Ive not made nor had two smaller 1/32nd models than these.  Fortunately for me!

I haven't had driving distance to a Nationals since Anaheim.  I mean, technically anything in the US is driving distance, but reasonable driving distance would be nice

    CHECKERTAIL at last!

Time to put on the livery. This is the machine I chose to depict.

This is how this a/c appeared in October 1944. But it was known that the color scheme went through several changes since May 1944 when the 317th sq. received their first P-51D. I haven't decided yet which definitive scheme I would choose for the model –still looking for additional photos, so anyone …? . One sure thing is that it included the famous black and yellow checkerboard on its tail.

First thing to do is paint the yellow background. I had the Tamiya XF-3 Flat Yellow at hand but found it a little too lemon to my taste. So I decided to put on a PINK –instead of white– base coat in hope that it would warm up the yellow.

The yellow turned out rather nice.

While the yellow was drying, I transfered the black squares on tracing paper with the correct size, spacing and angle so that the result would match the real a/c. Only paper and pencil.
    Old school, right?

First I thought about airbrushing the whole area using masks cut from Tamiya tape but positioning the masks proved very difficult.
So up to plan B: the black squares are cut from black decal sheet and positioned one by one.

The problem is to know where to start. Using the original tracing, two axles were determined and their positions transferred to the kit.

    First square positioned

Following squares aligned on the axles

    And so on

    One side done

    Two days later

    Needing a little rest now.
    See ya next.
    Comments, questions, yadda yadda ...

    Cheers,
    Quang

Id definitely hit up a Pac NW IPMS Nationals!   I love that area, and the climate there in August as you said is great. I love that whole area, and have long wanted to go back to the Seattle area, and also want to head back over to the Olympic Ntl forest.

I sure wish IPMS would have nats in the Seattle area sometime. Obviously not very centrally located, but the weather in August is fantastic, and there is a lot to do outside the convention to get people to come. Great aircraft and armor museums, great food, great sights, etc. I think they need to try it once. I have no idea what shape the Seattle IPMS group is in, though. I live 2.5 hrs east, and we don't even have an IPMS club anymore.
