Painting on the 109 underway, again, the Kitsworld decals shows fairly heavy mottling going right down to the bottom of the fuselage sides. While paintings (never trust an artists rendition) show little... or even no mottling on the aircraft sides. There's also paintings of the aircraft with II Gruppe straight line instead of a III Gruppe wavy line, but I have 1or 2 pics. here of the aircraft with the wavy line so, that's what I'll use.
I ran out of a key Tamiya color to home mix the RLM 75 so used some recent acquisition paints that were as yet untried, Mission Models, they seem to work ok.
My query: does the mottling look to heavy?

paint came up with the tape off the resin exhaust pipes, my fault. not the paint. I forgot to clean and prime the resin

    Thanks for looking

I wasn't sure I'd start a thread on this or not... I may never finish it. Not the 109 but the severely damaged B-17 that goes with it
I'm hoping to (someday) realize a model Vignette similar to the book cover "A Higher Call" I have begun with the Revell 109 G-6 because it's the only 109 in 1/32 scale (that I know of) that can be modelled with the wheels up. I have crews to fill both aircraft involved, the ones that can be seen anyway, and decals...all I need is time...years of it!
So after a week or two of tinkering with the 109, here's where I'm at. (Feel free to tell me I'm nuts and not to do it, then I have an excuse to stop)

Having never really been a fan of "prop blur" props, I filled the prop cutouts in the spinner and sanded it all smooth, trying to give the impression of an invisible prop at high RPM
Off to the nut house now...

No.  According to the Fundekals instruction for their F4U decal sheet, 740 is described as having its port wing replaced from an older Corsair, as characterized by the previous practice of having insignias on both sides of the wing.  Star with no bars under the port wing is visible in this photo...

Star with bars added on top of the port wing is visible in the following photo.  Although it is not clear in the photos, I've decided to depict the older two-tone camo on the port wing  so both sides were painted Blue-Grey and do not match the rest of the aircraft.

I have stopped in this project for a while. I have installed MDC s ETC 500 and Schloss 1000 racks few weeks ago. But when I tried to add other components of this set I saw that all of the components on MDC pocket are for ETC 500 (inner rack), no parts for Schloss . I m waiting for missing parts from MDC.

With my ZM Hs 129 heading off to the paint shop I was looking for something else to build and I decided towards the end of last year to get a couple of my stalled builds finished this year and the 188 was first on my list. Its been just over two years since I last worked on this build mainly due to getting seriously burnt out on all of the cockpit detail/ rebuild work as this has turned in to one major project, all out of my own choice as I really wanted to push myself and see just where my skill set was and what new things I could learn and then getting back from a New Year holiday to find Pastor Johns 110 G-4 set waiting for me to get stuck in to with the 188 getting relegated back to the to do list!!

So I've spent a few hours on and off familiarising myself with the build again and realised one of the main reasns I got bogged down was trying to get the MG 151, amo bin and bomb site installed in to the nose. First things first though was to begin cleaning up the one visible cut inside the nose of the cockpit.

Looks messy and will need some careful painting but not just yet as I will be needing to drill a few more holes yet to get the MG 151 mounting frames in place. Not much of the filled joint line will be really seen due to th large spent cart cartridge shute being situated there. I spent a lot of time and was very careful about cutting the resin tub in half to make the internal joints almost invisible.

I've also been working on the lower B3 gun stand. The vac part was cut out and test fitted perfectly.

The MG 81Z was then built up from the AIMS conversion parts along with an AIMS ammunition belt set and Quick Boost MG 81 resin guns.

Have some good mojo back for the 188 now and although I've spent a few hours at the bench today and not got much to show think I've got a good plan to get all of the nose section sub assemblies built and fitted in place so fingers crossed.

    Regards. Andy

If you see something I've done wrong, please don't be shy.....tell me so I can fix it!

Minor update, O2 tank painted, decaled and installed. Not too thrilled about the bands that hold it to the bulkhead, so I may do more work on them...... Also, added the red "Caution...." decal below the head rest (I should get that done!).

    Thanks again for looking.

Thanks guys!  I addressed the alligator cracks in the wing root the old-fashioned way: sandpaper.  Gotta do it dry because moisture will set off the hairspray underneath and make the paint soft.  And then I find out that the wing roots on the K-4 are actually made of wood, not metal so no metal chipping!  Hairspray chipping removes paint in chunks, which creates an uneven surface.  Sponge chipping adds paint, which also creates an uneven surface.  So I used sandpaper to smooth things down to a reasonable level and then shot it with primer, a little on the thick side, to fill in the voids and edges.  Confining my work area using masking introduced its own hairy adventures...

But I eventually got both sides repaired.  In the meantime, I was applying the decals so I got that done too.

I applied a little bit of sponge chipping to the wing right next to the root but kept it minimal for now.  I got nervous that I would somehow mess up the wing roots again and I didn't want to go backwards in this build anymore.

So the markings are done and sealed with a light coat of gloss.  The next step forward is to do a panel wash.  I mix my own washes using pastel chalk and water.

I used a dark brown wash for the under surfaces and upper grey areas.

A more blackish shade of brown is used on the dark green areas.

The panel wash is finished.  I'm going to sleep on it and take a fresh look tomorrow to make sure that I remove any smudges or excess wash that I may have missed.

The next step, besides wiping off all of the dust and paper towel particles, is to do some airbrush post-shading.  Especially on the bottom.

I've been struck down with a head-cold since Model Expo last weekend and along with getting on with my F-15E (Multi-Engine Group Build) have started the Hobby Boss kit while keeping warm at home.

It is a beast of an aircraft. Really nice detail and seems to fit together well.

Some filling and sanding then a couple of coats of Mr Surfacer 500 straight from the can have eliminated the rivet details for an area that on this version of the aircraft was wood.

Cockpit detailing is coming along nicely with some Eduard photoetch adding interest. I used oils for some dirtying up the cockpit - most will come off after it dries a bit.

The Eduard instrument panel is impressive, just needed some oils to accentuate its panels.

I plan to add some fuel lines around the black tank - just got to find some pics of where they go. I've got some showing fuel lines in there but not the terminations or routing yet.

Just need to wait a few days for some external etch to arrive with the paint and it will keep me busy during F-15E drying times.

Tom, I work my usual way, complete whole airframe, exl. vertical tail, and apply rivets, but any way is possible, rivets are very strongly adhered to surface.

    Good evening,

OK, I call the cockpits done! Wow, that took me half a year.... But I am quite happy with the result. Now, if only the rest of the plane works out like that I would be happy with my first build in 20 years.

As mentioned before, I added the following from scratch:

Deviation tables right console Handles for emergency release of bomb load (one handle for the A-8, two for the F-8) Emergency power button on upper instrument panel Knob on fuel **** lever The document strap and rudder pedal straps were made out of paper instead of the etched parts from Eduard I used control sticks from Quickboost and the column from Eduard (I drilled a hole into the sticks and glued them onto the columns
I used Mr. Color RLM 66 and Tamiya's flat coat as a finish.

Now, on to the cover of the upper instrument panel. I'll add some rivets and details. After that, riveting.

    All for now.

    Cheers,

    Roger
