  1. Been looking at fuselage windows - confirmed that I need to move some. Plan for tomorrow is to correct holes and glaze - and maybe some interior stuff at last - depends on mood. And have a plan coming together for cowls (the ID ones are pretty awful). Iain
  2. Your build is superb - like it a lot! They have their challenges - but I'm a huge fan of Special Hobby/Azur kits - some great subjects that are not available elsewhere... Iain
  3. No problems there - you'll see the sections I've done are currently oversize whilst I've been sanding the balsa core to shape. They'll be trimmed to length/width and then I'll add the outer skin on the other side (the sheet plastic in the photos will form inner surface for the flap area - to be cast in resin sections. Little way off paint yet - but aim to have, more or less, an airframe on display at Telford - and a completed/painted Connie on the competition tables in 2014 Iain
  4. Just normal medium grade cyanoacrylate - apply to the plastic - then add balsa (not the other way around!). The glue will 'grab' almost instantly on the wood - so align carefully before placing in contact! Very strong and lightweight. Iain
  5. (In the voice of the Churchill Insurance dog) "Oh yes" You may have missed my Lightnings thread! Stirling work on the 17 though - bringing to Telford? Iain
  6. Looking at cowlings tonight - can't beat giving things a good coat of looking at... Iain
  7. No - the Revell He 219 is far closer to a real scale He 219 than the Trumpeter EE Lighnings are to real Lightnings - by quite a huge order of magnitude... Trust me! Interesting thread though - can't quite bring myself to make a purchase yet. Iain
  8. OK - having compared what I now have in front of me (taking up the whole of the kitchen table) with yet more photos and drawings I've established that: a: could do with a few more degrees of dihedral - should be easy b: a few of the round windows down towards the cockpit are out of whack position-wise and need redoing c: I need to hack more off the centre tail fin d: I've pretty much worked out what needs to be done to the cockpit 'plug' to correct and make suitable to vac a new canopy e: I think I've found a pretty close match to the wheel hubs - Eduard Brassin B-17 - need to check diameter - but looks like it will work with a few mods and new tyres. f: I've made a start on a master for casting the prop blades... (random - I know - but need something small to work on for a change of pace). More when there's more - hopefully later in the week. Iain
  9. Indeedy - I'm actually trying to actively *cut* weight on this at present - getting heavy!!! As Derek says - there are normally several ways to skin a spar - IYSWIM? The balsa is easy to work with, very light and pretty strong. My spar is still to have a rear 80 thou sheet styrene section added - that will only happen after I've decided I'm fully happy with the dihedral angle. Iain
  10. Fair point - are there any Mods in da house? Paging the Mods... Actually more likely to crack on with this one than the Dominie I currently have in there! Progress-wise you're probably right Derek - most of the glaring issues with the moldings have now been addressed (the really hard part) - so it *should* be downhill from here (maybe). Complete and on display at Telford 2014 maybe... Iain
  11. Cheers guys... Derek - if mods think it's worth moving over to that area? Just mindful there *is* a time limit over there - but, hey, you never know! Iain
  12. And a few more... With help from my trusty profile guage and lots of cutting, carving and sanding - the centre fin fits rather well: After careful measurement - especially with regard to for'd/aft position - I've cut out openings for the spar. Opening marked up with pencil, corners drilled and cuts scribed into surface with fresh blade: And she fits like a glove: Ho hum - but I was expecting this to be fair - the parts as moulded. Next time anyone complains about the next Scruggs Wonderplane Mk III needing a 'little filler' - I'll send them this: And for comparison - here with a ZM Skyraider I prepared earlier (not small in itself!). First time the wings have been positioned on the fuselage - quite a major milestone!! Have fun! Iain
  13. Pix as mentioned - more to follow... Composite spar: In place in the wings: Flap upper section/wing trailing edged in progress - one balso core shamfered - second to follow - before upper skins: Tail feathers shaped to within half a mm of their lives - dust everywhere! Middle fin shaped to fit over tailplane and all control surface areas boxed in: Aileron areas boxed in and additional sheet added to correct trailing edge curve: Scratching head on tip tanks - shortened to match Heller - but now think these are quite a bit out - research needed: Just looking at these images - they really don't convey the size of these parts and, therefore, the elbow grease that's gone into them! Maybe more later - have some DIY to do first... Iain
  14. And, and, and... The wings are fitted (dry) to the spar - it all works!!! I know - simple things - but it's taken a lot of work to get to this stage... P'raps we're on a roll at last! She'll be at Telford - *might* even have the wings on!!!! Iain
  15. Spar done!!! Happy, happy, happy (I'd forgotten how nice Balsa is to work with - spar is a styrene/balsa sandwich) Iain
  16. OK - everything's out again... A lot of work since last post - not that it shows - yet - but I will post an update tomorrow with lots of images. One example being discovery that the rudder hinge line on the middle fin is 5" further forward than the outers - so that's been re-done. Also a *lot* of thinking on how I progress from here - some challenges thought through and sorted in my head. One of those is interior. Originally I'd planned a full interior - but that's a lot of open fuselage interior that just won't be seen! Plan now is to get the side windows in and the nose gear bay completed. Make up some beefy internal bulkheads for the middle area of the fuselage - and cut away a top section above the front radar op areas/cockpit so that I can assemble and sand the fuselage prior to adding the interior details from above. That's the plan anyway... Right - about that spar! Iain
  17. Me? Nah - impossible! I did have a moment where I thought 'no more photo's 'till Telford' - but only lasted a few seconds... Wings at a stage where I can clean up the aileron openings - and make a start on the wing area above the flaps - balsa core - polystyrene sheet skin - in this case 30 thou... Aileron areas boxed in with 30 thou sheet. Balsa/plastic composite sections cut and bonded - currently oversize (you'll see why later) and ready for sanding session to make the balsa core triangular in cross section (i.e. taper towards trailing edge): Tail surface areas being boxed in also - ready for final shaping and making the surfaces themselves: Whilst all the cyano 'curing' - time to start drawing up the spars - again - these will be a balsa/plastic (80 thou) composite. Have now decided how all this will hang together - will build wing - tip to tip - complete with joining surfaces - then insert into fuse from below as one unit. Manufacturers drawing not to scale (actually too small!) - but gives me all the wing station points in inches: More tomorrow - promise! Iain
  18. Hmmm - getting a bit of a balsa wood fettish this evening - but making some rather jolly progress! Oh and I love the smell of Cyanoacrylate in the evening! <message ends> Iain
  19. Sorry - should have said - Essdale long discontinued (one of our forum members here ) Iain
  20. In addition to XS models: Aerotec - MC-72 Essdale Models - Supermarine S-5 and MC-72 Brach Models - MC-72 Prolly others too - that's just off top of head. Wasn't someone doing the Gloster VI in 1:32? Iain
  21. @Roy - may not have the Landrover this year - so may be restricted on what I can bring - and not a lot new from last year... Connie *will* be there - and with progress May have the He219 also - we'll see... Iain
  22. Bumpety bump... What are you all bringing then? Answers on a PM to Royboy please - go on - you know you want to! Iain
  23. It would sell at least one! Edit - actually - at least four as various family members would prolly like me to build one for them. My grandfather flew them with 812 Sqn, Fleet Air Arm during the '30s (HMS Glorious and Hal Far, Malta...) I strongly suspect I'd have to scratch build... Iain
