A great model, Mike, I especially like the unusual postwar scheme and the restrained weathering.

    Hello fellow LSP-people!

This is my first build on LSP and if I'm honest, I'm a little nervous. The standard of work on the forum is amazing, and I would on the best of days consider myself a mediocre modeller so my participation may bring the standard down a little  Any feedback and/or advice is welcome. Now onto the subject ...

I will be attempting the new 1/24 Airfix Spitfire Mk.IXc and the particular build will be version "A" in the kit which was flown by Squadron Leader Johnny Plagis, No. 126 (Persian Gulf) Squadron. This aircraft was based in Harrowbeer, Devon, which is just up the road (9 miles) from Plymouth where I was born. I recall playing on the disused airfield as a child whenever my parents took my two brothers and I to Yelverton Rock.

I will be using some AM for this build.
Airscale cockpit upgrade set Eduard wheels 5 spoke wheels - I was sent the 1/48 scale wheels in error and no amount of work is going to get those to fit. Fortunately there is no rush for the replacement. Eduard exhaust (on backorder) HGW harness (on backorder) Airscale harness ordered

    Thanks for looking!

    Seasons Greetings

I figured before I finish the cockpit, I better start skinning some of the nose as there would be some hammering involved to get the metal to conform to the very curvy rocker cover blisters..

..it all starts like this - a bit of ali sheet taped along one edge and worked & beaten to follow the shape.... it creases and buckles and really doesn't like it, but I will have my way in the end..

..by now it's pretty much there, always working the creases away with thousands of taps of a tiny ball pein hammer..

..then the surface is abraded to get it smooth (sorry for the crap pictures..)..

..and finally cut to shape allowing the bottom edges to flare under the panels that will sit on top of them....

..and with those panels added and the exhaust ports..

lots more panels to go, and I need to complete the cockpit before I can do the rear of the blisters and add the cooling vents..

    Happy Christmas everyone

    Hi John,

Glad you took the time to ask - this is an entirely new book, based on three of us spending three weeks researching at the National Archives on Pennsylvania Avenue.  We found revisions to every previous book, particularly regarding:
    - Development
    - Engine installation
    - Fixed armament
    - That "kidney-shaped" lump on the right side of the forward fuselage
    - Canopy design
    - Hydraulics
    - Armor
    - Formation lights
    - Assistant pilot's flexible machine gun
    - Norden bomb sight installation
    - Gunner's installation
    - Radio revisions
    - Both approach light configurations
    - Mark XLII bomb racks
    - Wing folds
    - Floatation gear
    - Main gear strut revisions
    - Production deliveries
    - Paint schemes
    - Squadron histories
    - Wartime record

Additionally, the photos have been copied at very high resolution, and they're printed large, generally one to a page - you can see all the details.

My rule is that I won't waste my time writing a book that copies what is already written, so that you won't waste your money buying a book that offers nothing new.  My hope is that purchasers will find each book interesting to read and helpful for any modeling projects.

(However, I can't promise that anyone's wife will like it...)

    Cheers,

    Dana

I just finished my A model splinter scheme.  I used the MRP paint with their Pearl coating to replicate the have glass.  From all of my reading, the RAM tape is just painted with the 36170 but no “Pearl” finish over it.  At different angles it appears a different color because of light refraction.

BTW, when spraying the MRP, IT COMES OUT BROWN! Eek!  But turns gray as you build up coats and it cures.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the Pearl top coat is just on the bottom and around the canopy.

    Hi all,
I've replaced three of the colours as I wasn't satisfied.
    Light Green - ‘Hataka’  C093 Green (FS34258)
Dark Green - ‘Hataka’ C301 Dark Olive Green (FS34096)
Beige - ‘Hataka’ C060 USMC Sand
These have yet to be weathered so will dull down slightly.   I've fitted the single, central machine gun, using a modified 'Gaspatch' 'Vickers' 11mm 'Balloon Buster', as used by Willy Coppens.
This was p[ainted with 'Alclad' Gunmetal (ALC-120) then dry brushed with 'Mr. Colour' Super Iron 2 (SM203).   The propeller was base coated with 'Tamiya' Flat Red (XF7) and Full Red (XF19) mixed 70/30% ratio.
Windsor & Newton’ Griffin (Alkyd) Vandyke Brown oil paint was then applied to represent the wood effect.
The hub plates were brush painted with ‘Mr. Colour’ Stainless Steel (213) the ’AK Interactive’ Kerosene wash (AK2039).   The interplane struts were base coated with 'Tamiya' Desert Yellow (XF59).
Windsor & Newton’ Griffin (Alkyd) Burnt Sienna oil paint was then applied to represent the wood effect.   Whilst test fitting the tail skid, it snapped in half - no surprise given the brittleness of the 3D printed parts.
So that now needs to be addressed,   Mike

Update 11/27/23: Sand Filter Now Available here

Second round of test prints are "in the soup" as I write this. There isn't anything terribly wrong with the Italeri kit part -- except for the fact they have the flap hinged on the wrong axis  -- but the sand filter can use some super detailing so here goes! The finned cover is printed separately, alllowing the modeler to paint the filter element. (Based on my experience wrenching on Italian cars from the early postwar period, the pleated filter element will likely be made of brown, slightly fuzzy material. )

The set is designed to use the kit PE for th flap, albeit oriented correctly. If everything goes to plan, this should be available next week.

It would appear the kit designers modeled the spinner after the survivor at the Museo Storico Aeronautica Militare at Lazio, possibly unaware that it is in fact  a highly modified C.205 Veltro item and is inaccurate in numerous respects --  too long,  central hole too big, etc.

And now for my favourite part - adding the Tamiya fine grey primer straight from the can. This stuff is gold and provides for a really nice surface to identify any defects which need to be rectified. Once that's done, I treat the primer coat to some 12,000 grit micromesh for a silky smooth finish upon which the paint can be applied :

Wing fences have been added but broke off soon after. They'll go on as the last part before final varnish is applied.
