  1. The landing gear will need to support a 1 kilo model. Jetmads tested it to 3.5 kilos.

The yellowing of vacform canopies occurs due to the breakdown of the cellulose content of some plastics due to the action of ultraviolet and oxidation.

It's not a consequence of all clear parts. PETG vacformed plastics will be fine, as will the resin used by Jetmads and other contemporary producers of clear resin parts.

As to clarity, the resin can be buffed and dipped in clear acrylic for added zing.

  2. One thing I've noticed from builds of the Viggen is there is an awful lot that can be learned about the aircraft from the way they've modelled it.

If they bring that to the Draken it'll be a fantastic kit.

As I've said before, the F-104, the Mirage, the MiG-21 and the Draken are THE classic Gen2 single seat, single engined jet fighters.

Although not a bubbletop Spitfire, i did a similar conversion using the RB Griffon nose with the Tamiya Spitfire VIII kit.

As Thierry mentioned, the Tamiya kit is narrower but I was able to shim it and blend the two together. The bigger challenge I found was the lower cowl/wing leading edge.  There is a build thread on here somewhere for it.

    Here's a recent pic.

One other option may be to use a PCM Spitfire XIV and cut down the aft fuselage.

Iconicair supposedly has a Griffon conversion in the works the Tamiya kit.  Here's hoping he still does .

Somewhere lurking in my stash is a Cammett lo-back conversion to turn the PCM Mk IX into a Mk XVI, made redundant by the Tamiya Mk XVI.

I'd hazard a guess it'd fit the PCM Mk XIV, if one can be found.

ah, don't mention this to my wife however that's where a bottle of wine followed by access to the internet sent me down the naughty path - I now have 3 Fly hurricanes to sit along side the spits...........now repeat and learn - I must not access the internet when I've had a drink, I must not access the internet when I've had a drink !

They're good kits. Some care is needed in getting a good fit with the cockpit in order to allow the wing to seat correctly.

But shapewise all their Hurricane versions are very fine efforts with great surface detail.

The U/C unit looks absolutely brilliant and thanks for sharing the very clear pics.

I have this kit on order (10905) too and was wondering; do the U/C units have a metal core being weight bearing or is the material used some special compound to support the weight? I only ask as that is a serious lump of resin and wondered about the long term structural integrity; especially if it were to get bumped or nudged whilst on display or transporting to a show etc....?

Not sure where I read it, but the model will weigh around 1 kilo, and the resin gear has been test loaded to 3+ kilos.

Interesting - it never used to?

I've made up new sections for this - the Aires nozzle set is a lot better shape (as well as detail) wise than the Trumpeter kit parts.

I bought mine 6 or 7 years ago. I only wanted the nozzles for my Echelon kit, but as I've since added a Trumpy one I'm glad of them.

Looking at the most recent Aires listing, they no longer seem to be present in the upgrade

  7. I was trying to explain this to Ali at Aerocraft a while back, but regarding Phantoms and producing a one piece canopy including windscreen.

Many of us will have multiple Spitfires (or Phantoms).

Sure, the hoi-poloi will have just one, but many, MANY of us have multiples we want to build because we like the type.

I may build ONE Tamiya Spitfire with an exposed engine, but not the other three. One is enough.

Likewise the Tamiya Phantoms. I'll do ONE with a super detailed Quinta cockpit but that's it.

The other four will be closed cockpits.

It'd be nice if someone catered to our needs.
