    Anthony,
Its all your fault. Thanks to you I had to persevere and look what happened. I have ended up with not one,
but two UK Phantoms, a FG-1 and FGR-2. The horror!
But seriously, as that Collins chap used to say, I still think that dreary grey livery you plan to use is wrong.

Mine required some old style modelling skills, it must have been a Friday afternoon jobbie.
The finish on the resin was a bit scabby, the wings were warped, the fuselage halves were warped and there was air bubbles everywhere, mine did not have the lining up bit on the top of the nose and required some "persuading" to line up.

The wing to fuselage joint was also interesting.

And the air bubbles and thin and cracked fuselage.

However all it took was a bit of old fashioned modelling to put right and the end result was to my mind spot on.
I once built two identical resin Yak 1b kits and they varied so much, it's seems to be just the luck of the draw

    Cheers

    Thanks Thierry,
and you are of course correct, but hey I have never shied away from a challenge. Until a good kit becomes availabe
I have to cobble something presentable together. With all due respect the MDC Typhoon is terrible. Uneven
fuselage halves, heavy warping of parts.

Oh absolutely mate!  This build would be nothing without the help of a lot of other people.
I cant thank enough Kerry, @Derek B, @Gene K, @Greg W, @scjh, @Iain in the early days....... my goodness I am too scared to do a list because the help has been endless, even just the encouragement from people like yourself, @wunwinglow, @airscale, @chuck540z3, @Ali62, @Cees Broere, @Marcel111, @vvwse4, @Spooky56, @Starfighter, @AlbertD, @DonH, @Troy Molitor, @Tony T, @scvrobeson @Kagemusha, @LSP_Kevin, @mozart, @spyrosjzmichos,  @Barry, @GMK, @Chek, @jenshb, @Jet Passion, @Turecki, @Landrotten Highlander, @IainM, @jimbo59, @Rainer Hoffmann, @geedubelyer, @easixpedro, @D.B. Andrus, @MDuv,  @thierry laurent......honestly these are the names that just quickly pop into my head, but I know that as soon as I hit submit I am going to remember more, and I am going to feel terrible about that!  I honestly appreciate everyones help and support, as well as a bunch of guys over at Britmodeller!

And sadly, Mike @seiran01, it's all his fault!  He sold me the kit and conversion......and mate, I thought we were friends!

Sorry if I missed anyone out, I hate making lists like that because you invariably set yourself up to fall by forgetting someones valuable comment at just the right time, or part supplied to make my life a little easier.

THis hobby has changed for sure, but only for the good!
Now I need to hurry up and finish this so you guys get a state of the art Brit Toom in 1/32!

    Cheers Anthony

    Morning chaps,
Interesting thread. I am currently working on a Revell Tiffy combining the Barracuda Tempest nose correction.
After two major RAF Phantom conversions I wanted something simpler hohum.

Although I always liked the Revell kit, though basic by todays standards, it’’s a good starting point. But
the starboard cowling panel never seems to fit without serious filling and sanding.
The fit of the resin is doable but the difference in wing thickness should be interesting.
Has anyone experience with such a conversion?
    Cheers

    100% agreed!
Yes I went over and had a good catch up...wow you're doing a fantastic job of yours mate!

Awwww thanks buddy, that means a lot!  I am pleased you're enjoying it as much as I am!

More progress, this time on the undercarriage.  Initially I thought I only needed the lower section of leg with extra links, then when Kerry was drawing it up measurements didnt quite add up...and after further research Kerry found the leg dia didnt seem to add up to the drawings.  It seems the kit and aftermarket ones are 4.8mm dia whereas the FG.1 (double ext nose leg) is 6.2mm!  Interesting, but totally makes sense as it would have the extra oleo extension??  Anyway, cant 100% confirm this but we are going with the drawings and the reasoning that this might make sense anyway. However the more I look at photo's I am getting more convinced it looks chunkier than a std Phantom noseleg (incl FGR.2).  There are several differences in the FG.1 leg as well as the upper links are different again as well as a few other details.  Anyhoo, needless to say this has ment a whole new leg has been done to be printed and test fitted (as it has to also include the rearward rake).  Always something eh?  Thank goodness for Kerry, in fact he has so much involvement in this with me that it really is a joint project as I couldnt have got it this accurate without him....Thanks buddy!

So in the meantime I have been working on mains and final detailing and painting.  More to go on these along with trying to find stencils for the main oleo's...no one seems to have done them in 1/32 and I cant find anything close at this point.

And yes...sheep are everywhere here in NZ, even my modelling bench!

    Test fitted....looking good!

You saw my nose u/c doors with primer....now all painted, stencils and wiring added along with some subtle weathering

These doors got really filthy but I tried to restrain myself a bit and did my best to match XV571's doors at this point in her life

    And both the fronts together

So on the hunt for a MLG oleo placard and then final details added and the legs are done, still working on the MLG doors

Thanks for looking in...I am still going!

    Cheers Anthony

With apologies to my P39, it is time to nail something new together...

I was inspired by the exquisite models on show at Telford to go back to old school model making. My P39 started as an experiment that proved I could make a whole airfame in 3D, but after a long break from any modelmaking as I focused on airscale I found it hard to pick it back up..

Add to that a chance conversation with my friend Torben at SMW about subjects that could inspire me, he mentioned early racers and a bulb in my head went off :). Both he and I like ther S5, but the S6B has so many attributes that suit me - one being it is all metal rather than fabric winged and the other being that the real one is accessible at the Science Museum in London...

    So here we are... S1595..

    ..a beautiful machine..

..with inspiration in place and many hours of trawling the internet for images, I set off for London to get reference pics - unfortunately it is really badly lit, but 457 pics later I had enough with the disparate plans I found to start drawing out shapes...

..the rear of a float for example..

..and this aeroplane is covered in a LOT of rivets, especially the wings as the surface doubles as the radiators (which were removed from the slipstream for streamlining)..

    typical is the float again...

..though where I have been doing complex cockpits in previous models, this one is pretty simple..

..still room for 3D though, this will become the fuel tank under the instrument panel..

..with drawings created, I made lots and lots of parts from 1mm card & 2mm cores... I also designed a 3D printed matrix with the bottom of the fuselage and the top of the floats to set the angle and give strength to the struts..

..the cockpit is going to be tricky as there is just skin and very small thin formers so for now it is part of the core and with brass 'U' channel running down the sides where the real one has a strengthener I hope to cut it all away later

..the 3D core in the fuselage includes holes for the wing spars and you can see on the forward end one of the holes for 3mm brass rod for the strut cores (the other is just visible under the back of the wing)..

..Same for the float tops, though the scars from me getting the angles wrong on the first pass are visible here..  there is also a slot running around it to centre the cores...

..and assembly has started, the fuselage is super slim, literally the size of the engine cross section - the shape will be created by filling the gaps with hard sculpting foam and a skim of P38 filler before skinning.. for now there are just placeholders for the engine blisters as I need to refine the drawings - they are a complex shape..

so that's it - underway with a new project and I am glad to be back at the bench
