  2. Morning all, A little more progress to share on the Sunderland - I've been working on the engines of late which has not been the most fun (I hate engines and cockpits!) but I'm at a stage where they are ready for installation to the airframe. Sunderland IIs were powered by the Bristol Pegasus, of which aftermarket options were very expensive and to fit four to model would have cost me nearly £100! Therefore I did originally plan to modify the Revell 1/32nd Hercules engines from a Beaufighter, but being two row seven cylinder engines, that was going to be quite a challenge. With the Pegasus being a single row nine cylinder set up, a better starting point would have been a Wright Cyclone and thankfully a fellow forum member came to the rescue (thanks, Mark!) and sent me a set of his unused HK Models' B-17 engines. The reduction gear housing more closely resembles the Hercules set up, however, so I used the HK cylinders and the Revell Hercules reduction gear - not perfectly correct but close enough... The Pegasus is actually, at least at first glance, a quite simple engine to replicate (used for illustration purposes only): I won't have to worry about detailing the cylinder heads as these will all be hidden by the cowling, so it would just be a case of adding the single push-rods. First up I sprayed the inside of the cowlings black and then I needed to check the cylinders fitted inside the cowlings properly - in the picture below you can see they sit quite happily in the correct position and actually needed no glue to hold them there. The reduction gear housing is just sitting on the cylinders to get the 'sit' of the engine correct in regard to clearance for the propeller: I then painted the cylinders and reduction housing, and made the pushrods from Evergreen before adding and painting: A final test fit in the cowling - as you can see not much can actually be seen so the detail I've added is quite adequate: All four 'power eggs' are now complete, with the engines secured with Araldite Epoxy to ensure they don't fall into the nacelle: Next up will be installing these onto the wing... stay tuned. All the best, Tom

  5. Okay, kits ordered and JetMads got back to me regarding a suggestion for the SAAB Ja-35 Draken in 1/32 - “we will get to that aircraft in the near future”... both single and two seat versions! As well, they mentioned we will be seeing a two seater of the SAAB Ja-37 Viggen too! Awesome news all around! I have received my DN Models 1/32 splinter camo mask set too! a quick question, does anybody know if there will be 1/32 Swedish national markings released as a mask set as well? Perhaps from DN Models? Thanks Cheers Alan

  7. Here's a rendering of the 1/32 scale Beaufighter observer's station design at about 75% complete. This is the late station configuration (Mk.VI, Mk.X and Mk.21), with ammunition bins and pyramidal seat support platform. It is possible that Mk.I Beaufighters were retrofit to this configuration when 20mm ammo bins replaced 20mm ammo drums and the seat platform was strengthened. Some of what you see here will change and more features will be added as the design continues to mature.

    Hawker Fury

Work continues with the Fury, painting and masking "background" areas before getting on with the roundels etc. I'm pleased to say on investigation that a tail wheel was supplied, so that's fitted....but it looks like the axle has come adrift....oops! I've made masks for the camouflage and hope to spray the green section this afternoon.

  13. WoooooHOOO!! My late production ICM AH-1G just landed at my door, and man oh MAN.................I have to say so far what I've seen is really, really nice. A really nice mix of raised rivets, recessed rivets, flush panels, overlap panels and raised panels. Its one of the nicest kits that I've handled in a long while. From the little time I've had with it, it honestly appears to be very Tamiya like in its subtlety and finesse. AND if you get the Late production, you also get both early and late skids, as well as both early and late tails, turrets and other misc parts to create a complete early production version as well! Honestly one of the nicest kits I've laid eyes on in a long while. Ill be doing an IBR likely this weekend. Cheers

    Messerschmitt Bf109G-6

Hi all!! This time I´ll revisit an older kit that never got completed. Actually, It´s far less then 25% so well qualified for a new GB. It´s Revells (Germany)´s schmitt from a few years ago and as I still suffer from a bad case of AMS I will add some additional goodies. Not that the kit requires or need it, but because I want to! A few Barracuda-sets, New cooler, prop (spinner and blades), a little assembly-jig for the prop, Master Gun barrels, Eduards Brassin gear and wheels. Not all will be used here, but I present the bits and pieces as the build continues. Seatbelts from HGW and a joystck from Quickboost; Decals from Eagle Editions, but I can´t find a picture, will show it later, but it will be a Desert Machine. I started the build in the cockpit, where else would one start a kit??? The Cockpit glued together….. One thing that bugged me in this kit was how Revell have made the landing gears, they look so weak. So when Eduard released their Brassin metal gears, I just had to have them! I didn´t like the seat either so I got one from the Baracudacast range, seatbelts and the whole rear bulkhead was included! Here I am now, some subassemblies done and soon ready to paint. I really hope I´ll get the kit done this time! More to come soon! Cheers! Stefan

  15. The last week has been spent on the cockpit. There are left and right cockpit frames, front and rear top frames and the seat back which attaches to the rear frame. And etch seat belts to puzzle over as well as lots of tiny etch bits awaiting the carpet monster. First was the left side frame and the console that attaches to the floor just inside this. Because of the complex seat belts on this, I thought it might be best to put the console in after all the side and rear frames, without seat back, were attached to the floor first. This is because the seat back has a canvas (?) etch piece glued to it and then chains have to be attached to the belt links that the canvas bit has at the lower corners of this and I thought it would be difficult to get the chains in place with the seat back and canvas bit in place. There was also a red bottle on the left frames to get in the way too. Wrong idea. There was no way I could get the console in after the right frame was attached, so that plan was scrapped and I'd just have to think of another way around the seat belt fitment issue. Plan B was to build the right side console then attach the frames and worry about the chains later. This is plan C. The console was the fiddly bit, with six levers and a trim wheel in etch to attach so this was built up first. Slowly, to let the levers set in place. Once dry, this was carefully glued in place, then the right side frame attached, complete with red bottle of some sort. There are two levers cast into the frames, so these were picked out in different colours. Next was the right side frame which has a black bottle and a gauge with switch cast in, and a console that attaches to the frames. I scrapped the kit console and used the Eduard Etch version, which looks much better to me. Fiddly, but worth it. After looking at my photos, I also added a gauge decal from my spare decals stash, as the kit does not provide one here. Another spare decal was added to the console to cover the fact that I put an etch piece on the wrong place on the console. This was put aside for the moment. The other picture I took of this was out of focus, but you'll see a better shot of the console later. Next was the seat back, or upright, and rear top cockpit frames. I glued the seat upright to the top frames, being very careful with the angle that this set to ensure the two parts fitted into the cockpit. Too upright, and the cockpit framing would not fit together. Once dry, I then attached the etch canvas with the lower seat belt hooks using CA and test fitted. As best I can work out, the chains then attach to the back of the seat upright then curl around to the hooks at each lower corner of the etch canvas bit. Confused?? Hopefully the picture explains better than me, and I also hope I got it right. Too late now if it's wrong anyway. There's very little in the way of wiring or cabling in the cockpit pictures I've seen, so almost none was added. I would have thought that there might be levers and cables coming out of the consoles on each side, but seemingly not. Perhaps it all goes vertically down the sides and can't be seen. However, the rudder cables are prominent, and attach to the rudder bar just inside the "pedals" at each end. They seem to be clear of the floor along their entire length, so I made wire guides that I glued into the pilot's seat base towards the back. These can't be seen once it's all finished and in the fuselage, and I painted them to match the floor too. Before going any further, I attached 0.3mm wire to the rudder bar, running the wire through these guides which you'll see in a rearward shot of the cockpit. Once set, I then attached the right side frames/console assembly to the base, and attached the seat back in between. When it was all dry, the forward top cockpit frames were set in place. Here it is, awaiting installation into the fuselage. The first shot is those seat belt chains and rudder cable supports. Here's some more shots of the cockpit. This is where I'm at right now. There is a little more work to do on the cockpit sides, then I can look at fitting the cockpit assembly into the fuselage, attach the top seat belts, then button up the fuselage. So hopefully that's what you'll see in a couple more days. Cheers, Michael

Finally back to the hog! The engines are done but not mounted to the fuselage yet. Also, the model does not have an accurate representation of the APU. Some scratch building and no it has an APU. Enjoy! Pretty ugly APU exhaust and no intake! Intake: New exhaust: Nacelles completed and primed: I hope you like the pics.

    Hawk T.1A

Going to give it a shot with the Revell Hawk T.1A kit. Plan on doing a grey bird with the Xtradecals sheet. I have almost all of the aftermarket for the kit, but definitely won’t use all of it. Right now, planning to use the Master pitot, G-factor gear, CMK seats, CMK flaps, and maybe some Eduard bits. Up in the air on the IPs. Also have the Flightpath AIM-9 pylons on the way, to be used with the Eduard AIM-9L/Ms.

  18. Speaking of the cockpit, I'll start with a comparison of the kit offering from Hasegawa and the newly released Aires resin set. The Aires cockpit (foreground) has some excellent detail to include the seat, side consoles, and the floor. The real bonus, however, is the corrected coaming section for under the windscreen area. Hasegawa has this integrally molded into the fuselage halves and incorrectly depicts both the position of the gunsight and the coaming itself. While the Aires part requires some cutting of the kit parts to replace, I think it will definitely improve this area which is highly visible in the cockpit. The instrument panel is the traditional PE-acetate sandwich that I may replace with a Quinta 3d printed set if I can get my hands on one.

  19. OK, after a false start, here I am with a perennial favourite of mine, a Mighty Eighth Mustang. I'm aiming to do a more unusual subject, but that will depend on how the homespun masks come out, so I have a subject in mind plus two reserves. I made a start this morning by hitting Hannants website for a few aftermarket items, but while we're waiting for them to arrive here's what I have got so far.

  22. !/24 scale decals didn't exist for this RCAF Mustang. Apart from the roundels, I printed all the decals including the stencils and squadron badge on my printer/copier, using clear decal paper and Testor's decal coating. I think masks for the code letters would have been much better, but I was pleased enough. Looking at the results others are getting with a mask cutter, I think I will invest in one. They make more sense for large scale models. Richard

    P-51D-5NA 339th FG FINISHED

The aftermarket's on its way, so in the meantime I've been cleaning up the major components and assembling a few items that aren't in the cockpit - there's a Barracuda seat coming among other things, so I need to work out when I see it how to fit it. First impressions of the kit are good. There's a little bit of flash here and there, but that's not a problem. I've assembled both sets of drop tanks and the bombs (although I won't be using the latter), and as usual will decide which tanks to use later. I've also made a start on the wings and straight away I've deviated from the instructions: rather than assemble the wheel well interiors onto the main spar, then fit that, I thought that fixing the innards to the top wing first gave a more positive fit. Time will prove whether I was wise or foolish to do it like this.

  27. Lets see what we have: The well-known Ju-88 A-4 kit. OOP for years now and hard to get. What a pity! Happily I have two in the stash, both with an AIMS conversion sets: C-6 heavy fighter/ "Zerstörer" and 388 J night fighter. This here will become a C-6 heavy fighter. The 388 is a much more extensive build so on the backburner only. Upgrade sets: The AIMS set (instructions shown only). My one will become the second from top because of the solid nose and the Ostfront theater markings. GFactor brass u/c. There is no need to introduce that stuff, right? Eduard interior PE, also a classic. Montex masks for the canopy. Not shown: Real Colors RLM 66, 70, 71. I like this paint. This enables airbrush for dummies Maybe there is some more stuff in the stash. We shall see. Some more stash diving required. Earmarked for a buy is a set of camo masks for fuselage and wings. Thats it for now. Oh, this will become an on and off build. As usual Regards - dutik

  28. Not wanting to lose momentum on the build, the latest lockdown has motivated me to hit a lot of really awkward parts of the build that I'd been putting off forever! One of these was back in the cockpit, where the soundproofing goes from the sidewall right up to the side window sill. When I redid the nose, there was a huge gap that I had no idea how I was going to fill. I then made it harder on myself by putting the two rear seats back in and now having the extremely delicate and very exposed roof liner in play, I somehow had to measure, then fit a styrene panel to bridge the gap..... This is an old photo, but this is what I was up against: Working only with a pair of tweezers, the open side you see and no amount of patience, I actually managed to not only work out the dimensions of the panel, but also fit the pre-painted panel in place by shimmying it down around the tops of the seats. I don't think I could have made that ANY harder for myself if I had tried! There it is! New panel in place. As you can see there was some other little details to go in on that side too, in addition to re-installing the control columns which were also super un-fun! Got there in the end though! A few more shots for you.... I think that table is screaming out for something interesting to be put on it..... a map seems the obvious choice, but any suggestions? And so ends probably one of the most nerve wracking jobs of the entire build, and totally self inflicted by my poor planning! Cheers, Craig

  29. 1st! Well, I am in. I am tackling Revells Ju-88, adding one of Pastor Johns wonderful conversion sets to turn it into a Zerstoerer variant. Might become a C-6, but I have to dive into the stash first and to locate all the sets I've collectetd together: AIMS set, brass landing gear, resin wheels, some Eduard stuff and so on. 30. Greetings all, This has been a long-time 'as and when' project that I completed this weekend - Tamiya's 1/32nd F-4J finished as an F-4J(UK) of the famous 74 'Tiger Squadron' in the mid-1980's. It was built more or less out of the box, but with Mastercasters' FOD covers and YellowHammer decals. Paints were all Xtracolor enamels. It's the first time I have added crew figures to a model as my daughter requested that the pilots should be in it. I might add crews in the future as it adds a bit of life to the cockpit! All the best, Tom

Small update on #1 i painted the white on the tail and on the wing i found a old old tin of Humbrol hm10 navy blue, when testing the color out it matches 100% the blue on the insignia from the decals. AS for #2 im working on hiding the battery and switch in the landing gear well, more on that later

  39. IMHO there is always room for one more 109 if it is done up to state-of-the-art standards and, above all, is very accurate as to shape and dimension. Thus far, this one promises to be that kit. More importantly, it will likely sell by the shedload and will furnish Zoukei Mura with some cash flow for future subjects.

  40. Thanks Mike! Still plodding along, did a bit of touchup, added the area that would normally be under the canopy (had a question on the color, the consensus seemed to be it was painted OD for camouflaged Jugs), added the cowling and shot the yellow ID stripes. Looks like I have a bit of overspray to fix but that won't be a major task. That's it for now, thanks for checking in.

  44. Just personal opinion here but I have never had satisfactory results using Future as a clear. I've long since relegated it to dipping canopies only. It pools way too much for me, and is highly susceptible to environmental issues like water (if not cured) decal setting solution ext, ext. I've seen plenty of peeps use it to effect, but too much work for me without just reward. I pretty much only MM gloss lacquer or MRPs acrylic lacquer gloss. After finding the joy of how much better they worked as clears than Future, I switched and haven't looked back. YMMV

  47. Hi Andy and Hacker, Good news, I released a 1/32 scale British Mk.XV torpedo for the Beaufighter a few weeks ago as well as three different configurations of Bf 109 spinners in 1/24 and 1/32 scale. For model ship fans, I released a set of RMS Titanic funnels in 1/350 and 1/200 scales a few months ago, and last month I released a set of turrets for five different World War Two-era Italian heavy cruisers in 1/350 and 1/400 scales. The Beaufighter observer's station is in design now which is proceeding much slower than expected. Covid-related supply and shipping issues as well as heavy sales have badly affected available design time so most new design projects have been delayed. Unfortunately, Spitfire designs are among those postponed. Once the Beau observer's station is done, I'll get to work on the 1/24 scale George cockpit for the Bandai kit. More Spitfire products are in the queue after that. Regarding Bf 109 wheel wells, I'm presently working through a very robust and challenging research and design project queue right now. Once those projects are complete, I hope to add more aircraft projects to the queue. Thanks for your interest and patience! Kind regards, Steve
