Good evening everybody.

My name is Martin and I am a rivet counter......pause,,,, deep breath .... and  go!......I have been reading way too much about the KH kit being way too short and fatal flaw here and fatal flaw there. Flaming discussions were raging as usually when a new kit arrives.

I was glad to see a solid posts from many of our guys who know what they talking about, diagrams and scans etc.. Thank You for that. I love it .

I could not participate since I had nothing to say, insufficient budged did not aloud me to get my copy of this kit at the time.. Soon enough Kev started his OOB build  and  When Ernie got his mitts on this fine HK kit , I said enough, I am selling my stash....

(Cobra was The FIGHTER  of VVS, it was the symbol of the end of the Luftwaffe air supremacy over the Russian territories , it was the plane that I build as a child  from ancient 1/72 Revell kit, with shark mouth and big gun in the nose. As Ernie (Clunkmaster) once said the underdog, rejected by the USAF and British , finally paving the path of glory for the Red Army.

Why am I saying this, because many  that I talk to recently have no idea, how successful and legendary was this fighter in the hands of young Russian pilots that were fighting against  seasoned German airman, a toughened  veterans of many campaigns .)

So, eventually my little Cobra arrived and there was a time to get back on it. Recently I 've been loosing my mojo , so I began with the cut of the tail section in order to find another way how to deal with the length issue, that was opened in John's  constructive "plug" topic.

I will fast forward now to the current state. I will punish your senses with a bunch of  lousy cellphone pictures. This build is not going to be all out super detailed beauty. My idea is more like, this looks like ..."WW2 warhorse of an ordinary pilot who had nothing else but his faith and his machine "

 Here we go.

the cut was made at the panel line right after the engine compartment. I used evergreen strips to create an extension . Then On the flat surface I glued the two half of each side of the fuselage together. HTHen, still without the top cover I glued halves together. And it looked something like this:

IMG_3560_zpsxrbcl3oc.jpg

In order to eliminate the drop created by the movement of the profile I filled the lower part of the fuselage with resin. That way there is enough material to play with.

After bit of sanding I came up with this: (yeas I adjusted the rudder using evergreen stipe and superglue)

another side

IMG_3561_zps5xsws5os.jpg

The orbital sander was used to cut down the lower part of the fuselage. I know it sound brutal, but it is not, the flat surface of the sander  helps to create perfect line, the rest is up to your head  and a lots of research material to look at :)

You can see the bubbles in the resin, that will be addressed later ( no vacuum in  my kitchen) :)

Then there was a time to line up the carburetor intake with the rest of the modified outline. It was too short to be gin with.  I have a funny feeling that the intake housing was changing with the production batches, let me know if there is any record available . Thanks.

Blob of  putty.

After a bit of sanding, still needs the side to be shaped into smother transition .

Then I drilled into my index finger and since I was already on it I hollowed out the  intakes, not exactly as it should be , but at least there is some precipitin of depth.

The next step was to fill a places that were depressed to much , like cover plates gun ports and so on. In VVS technician were removing the gun pods and the wing guns, it was primarily due the stability increase and reduced wing load. Also  Russian Cobras were used solely as a Fighter, with one exception of a unit that was aloud to do free for all stafing runs at their own pace :)

After last night sanding session we are getting some minimalistic results. You can see the imperfection of the nose fit, that were created by me rushing to close the front that is gutted and it's lower portion filled with led shot. For you guys who are concerned about the amount of ballast for this model, it is sufficient to fill the lower cavities under the gun bay with led. No drama there.

So the next step is sanding the fine detail off in order to line up the front fuselage panels and rescribing the carnage. I know its a pity, but at the edit may pay of :)
