Peter

The light bulb finally went off. Scribe the primer and paint but not the bare plastic.

:D

evening ladies..

so, last time I posted I said the fuselage was ready for scribing....  well, I lied....

I had a bit more to do, in fact a day's worth of prep to get a good, polished primer base and all the little dinks and scratches sorted out. I also wanted to try and capture different panel structures around the cowl by trying masked panels with thicker primer...

...first up, after filling the main bits that needed attention and little bits that were uneven with mr surfacer, I masked the panel across the nose to tie in the two vent panels added earlier from brass shim...

WIP547_zps75585c70.jpg

WIP548_zps9c7c6308.jpg

...then masked the central panel and gave it another blast of primer...

WIP549_zps44b2f58a.jpg

WIP550_zps5f584a39.jpg

...then worked the entire surface with micromesh, from grade 1500 to 12000 to get a glassy polished finish..

WIP551_zps64f122fa.jpg

WIP552_zpsee6cd6b4.jpg

WIP555_zpsb27a8a9b.jpg

...this is where the new tail was added and a card fairing made to replace the tailwheel gear doors that were missing on G-AKRY...

WIP554_zps66dc83f6.jpg

...and hopefully here you can see the panel that was masked in with primer - I intend to scribe it's border so it remains to be seen whether after paint the difference in finish can be seen...

WIP553_zps794aeb33.jpg

...next up is a world of pain in trying to scribe and rivet the fuselage - I guess I will have to find a bit of sponge or something to hold it steady on the bench while I make those 'one chance only' swipes with a scribing tool...

until next time...

Peter

I keep lurking in awe at this project, and have never expressed my appreciation of the outstanding work being done !

Well, now this is a rectified mistake :)

Thanks Hubert - glad you are enjoying it :)

haven't had much time today, but at last I can finally breathe out....

scribing is the most nerve wracking part of modelling (construction anyway) and setting about a finish you have laboured over with sharp implements is not good for the heart...

first up, I scribed the main vertical panel lines, and then glued a bit of cotton into the prop hub so I could have a reference for the thrustline - this is critical to get the other panels oriented..

WIP556_zps78a23cfc.jpg

WIP557_zps0dc06ed4.jpg

..then some dymo tape as a guide...

WIP558_zps96b767fe.jpg

...and one panel is done... phew...

WIP559_zps9093c089.jpg

...got a few more done before packing up for the night and sharing with you good folk..

Great work Peter! I really enjoy scribing... it took me awhile to get it sorted, but I learned to start with patience, measure thrice and scribe once!! I really like the idea of using the thread to set a level from which to measuer other scribes.... I usually measure everything and then use tamiya tape to mark the lines, then draw them using a fine pencil... then when all the lines are drawn on I place the dymo tape where the lines are drawn... but the dymo tape erases some of the lines... but, your method using the thread elliminates this problem. Excellent work mate! It really is true that we learn something everyday don't we!!

Thanks for sharing this tip...

Cheers

Alan

Nice to see this lady moving on again. The redo of the tail is spot on mate – join what join. Also the re-scribe is brilliant , I’m with the others that I would be ecstatic to get something that looked half as good.

Right pull up the seat and reach for more popcorn

More please - Taff :D

That scribing is really terrific Peter! Clean and precise. I'm having no end of trouble with my Hughes racer in this regard (I've given up actually), so right now I'm highly envious!

thank you chaps - how very kind you all are :)

I struggled too with scribing but as in an earlier post, the answer is definately scribe primer, not plastic - so much easier and zero fuss or clean up#

I really like Radu's tools, and today it was out with the rivet wheel. Good reference is a must to know the detail of how the airframe was riveted together - I don't trust plans so rebuild pics are normally most helpful. For the Sea Fury this is Meier Motors or Sanders Auronautics who have excellent galleries of their fine work..

Here is the fuselage centre section, nicely showing the rivet pattern...

WIP570_zps0f4cd87a.jpg

..and so a start is made - usual method, using Dymo tape as a guide and micrometer for measurement..

WIP562_zps3087b390.jpg

WIP563_zps0696e9d4.jpg

WIP564_zps6a9f05ff.jpg

...and then started laying out the rear fuselage - not much more to say, hardly a 'riveting' build is it...

WIP565_zpsf4199c00.jpg

WIP566_zpsa1e40117.jpg

WIP567_zps2f6ef967.jpg

WIP568_zpse9946023.jpg

WIP569_zps19164382.jpg

...still loads more to do so this might get a bit dull for a while..
