Hey all. This is really uncharted territory for me, but I couldn't pass up the subject. I've always had a thing for the Flycatcher, it's such a cool but ungainly looking aircraft, I knew I had to build it. Since my recent shoulder injury has precluded me from my summer music programs, i means I have more time in which I can build, so I finally went and bought the kit off the Internet. I really haven't had much motivation for building lately, been dealing with a lot of stuff involving my injury, but I think this will help get me back on track. I've never built a large scale resin kit, let alone a large scale biplane, so this will all be new for me.

The Silver Wings kit looks amazing in the box, but really is a tiny aircraft. The entire plane takes up less area than a standard piece of 8.5" x 11" paper, the normal printer stuff. But what is in the box is really amazing, the detail is very sharp and well cast. None of the parts are numbered, but careful study of the instructions should give you a good idea of what everything is, and where it all goes. The resin looks very strong, which is good for someone like me, who tends to break stuff, and all of the struts are reinforced with metal cores, which should go a long way to keeping the assembly secure. Every thing comes wrapped in separate Zip-Lock bags, and most of the parts are wrapped in bubble wrap, which is a huge plus for Silver Wings, good to see they care about how their parts ship.

I hope to get a jump on construction tomorrow, since I spent most of this afternoon giving everything a bath in soapy water, which I've read is what you do with resin kits, and doing some very light flash clean-up. Painting should begin tomorrow, I'm following the instructions here, but if anyone knows the exact colors of the Flycatcher cockpit, I'd love to hear it.

Nice box art, nothing spectacular, but still nice. The box is much smaller than expected, about the same size as the 1/48 Tamiya Corsair box(I'm building the model for my girlfriend's birthday). But then again, the plane is not very substantial

The first parts you see are the fuselage halves, with no casting blocks, and they are taped together to stop them jostling around, and to show their great fit. Just a little bit of sanding should be needed on the bottom seam to remove some resin bits from the casting process. Nice framing detail that will be wood-grained to give some nice contrast, and the side doors will be open so you can see inside.

The next bag contains the wing parts, and these are nothing short of amazing. This is probably the best fabric detail I've seen on any kit except for a few Wingnuts kits, and the metal wire and locating pins should make assembly super easy. There is some tiny remnants of the casting blocks on the back of the wing and ailerons, but it should be easy to true it all up.

Posted Image
The third bag contains six smaller bags holding the rest of the parts.

Here are all six of the bags containing all of the tiny parts, and you can see in the second photo the wire core added to all of the struts. I will have to make sure to remove any excess resin from the wires in order to make everything fit perfectly. I don't foresee any problems with construction yet, but I usually find a way to mess something up along the way.

Nice little sprue of photo-etch containing the instrument panel and the fabric stitching. This is a cool effect, since the stitching should be raised above the surface, and it should give a different metal tone if it's added at the end.

One note about the instrument panel, it is not entirely accurate for an in-service Flycatcher. It is based on a restored bird, but there are no originals out there, just a couple of pictures and drawings. If you want to scratch-build your own panel, there are drawings on Silver Wings' website to help with that. But the panel will be buried deep in the fuselage, so probably will not be seen once construction is done. Just a note for anyone who buys this kit, this is the only real miss for them, but I understand that the bird they measured had the restored panel.

Looks a great kit Matt, and should be a fun build Will be good to watch! If you're building it OOB, why not consider it for the AOOB Group Build?

The last thing at the bottom of the box is the big decal sheet. There are three options on the sheet, and they are well represented here with the big sheet. I'm not sure if the sheet just seems huge because of the tiny box, but it fills the bottom. They are printed by Hungarian Art Design, a company I've never heard of, but the decals appear nice on the sheet. I might test one of them before committing to the actual build. There is a second sheet providing fin flashes and serial numbers. I wish they had provided the serial numbers separately so that you could paint on the fin flash, but I'll find a way to make it work. Maybe if you cut out the serial number extremely carefully, you could make it work. But I guess I'll use the decals.

I'm going to do either option two or three, they are the most appealing of the group to me, the big flashes of color will really help in my mostly drab collection of models.

If anyone has an opinion about color choice, please let me know. I'm one of those people who waffles about paint schemes all the way until paint hits the model, so any advice would really help with decision making process.

The last thing are the instructions. These are actually too big for the box, so they came folded, but I've got them under a book right now to level them out. The open left to right, in book form, which is much better than the multi-fold instructions some companies put out. The drawings are huge, and very easy to read, and even offer tips on where to add detail when it's needed.

Well, I will start on this one tomorrow. I wish all my American brothers a happy Independence Day, don't blow your fingers off guys. I will try and get some painting done in the temperature stays below 100, but we're never sure here in Fresno.

Thanks for reading in everybody. This will be quite the learning experience for me, so hopefully I don't mess it up too badly. Any help would be appreciated as I go from any of the bi-plane or resin veterans, but if anyone has any comments or advice, I'd love to hear it.

I will also be utilizing the amazing build guide Silver Wings has on their website from Doug Nelson. Doug, if you read this, thank you so much for blazing the trail, your guide convinced me to buy this kit, and will really get me through a lot of the stuff I'm unfamiliar with.

Hey there Kev! Thanks for the very quick comment. I am going to do it OOB, is there a way I could have it posted in both forums, or would I have to pick one or the other? I feel like the main forum gets more traffic, but I would enjoy participating in a group build, since I failed in the Soviet one (no room to put the finished model)

This looks like a very fun build, Silver Wings look like they're trying to be the Tamiya of the resin world, or the Wingnuts. Either one I'd be very happy with. And the kit was pretty reasonable ordered from FreeTime Hobbies in Georgia.

You'd have to pick one forum or the other, but GBs are all about participation (they live and die on the strength of it in fact), and I'd hate to think that folks choose not to participate simply because they feel there'd be fewer people looking at their thread. Since your build fits the GB nicely, and you seem ready and able to charge ahead and finish it, I'd say go for it! But if you're really looking to maximise the attention it gets, then you'd be better off leaving it here, as the WiP forum will almost always get more traffic (just like ARC always get more traffic than LSP, etc).

Good start Matt. I have their Gloster Gladdie, as well as their He-51, and they are definitely great kits.

Id say honestly, what forum you put this in may not make quite as much difference exposure wise as you might think if others are like me. When I go to LSP, I really dont go to any specific forum at all. I almost strictly use the "View New Content" button, and I read down the new posts as I go, not really paying attention as much to which forum the post Im reading is in.

This would be a perfect candidate for the AOOB GB in MHO.

This is Resin??
Wow, it looks just like an injection moulded kit. I've never seen the innards of one these laid out before and am deepy impressed with what you've shown us so far - I had absolutely no idea of what I was missing but I'd love to follow along and watch this lovely looking kit come to life.

Thanks Grant. Yeah, it's a very, very high quality resin kit. I would call it akin to the Wingnuts kits, and Tamiya kits in terms of detail and finesse to the parts. You should take the plunge on one of these. They are a little bit pricy, but they are pretty equal in price to the recent Tamiya kits. I will be sure to try and give everyone a very detailed report of how it goes together.

Thanks Brian! I'm glad you like it. I think I will move it over to the group build forum, so I can complete one of those. Maybe you should build your Gladiator while waiting for the B-25 to come out, since the strafer doesn't look like it will be out for another couple of months.

I agree with you about the baby blue option, that's probably the one that I'll do.

Thanks for reading in, I love your Skyraider build. It looks so amazing

Thanks Kev. I'll see if I can get one of the mods to move this build over to the group build forum, so I can contribute to that. I think following Doug Nelson's build guide will give me most of the help I'd need, and I would enjoy taking part in one of the group builds.

Thanks for reading in.

Would any of the mods mind moving this build thread over to the Almost of the Box Group Build? I would very much appreciate it.

Thank you Kev! Thanks for moving it over.

I've got some more progress. Today was just spent base-coating the cockpit parts, I did the slate grey, semi-gloss black, and some of the aluminum stuff. The slate grey is a mix of Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey, XF-73 J.M.S.D.F Olive Green, and XF-14 J.A. Grey to produce the light slate grey color of the interior. I have to mask off the rear portion, and do the linen and light wood parts, but that will come after the paint is fully dry. The black is Tamiya X-18 Semi-Gloss black, and the aluminum is normal Alclad White Aluminum.

The whole cockpit will be put together over the next couple of days, then I should be able to get some more pictures up of that part. The instructions are pretty clear, it's just difficult doing everything without part numbers, you have to keep measuring the cross-beams to make sure they fit.

Thanks for reading in everyone. Hope you all like it's going so far.
