Yes, another Tamiya Spitfire here in the WIP section! With the fantastic work posted here by the others, I admit to being a bit reluctant to posting these pics. I sure wish I could build like Ralph, Wolf, Jeroen, Johan and the others!

I am building the Mk.VIII, in the markings of Charles McCorkle of the 31st FG in North Africa. I bought the Kagero Top Colors booklet with decals and will be using these. This is how she will (hopefully!) look when finished:

As has been said before, the fit of the parts in these kits is nothing short of perfection. I thought the Tamiya Zero was good (and it really is good) this kit pushes the envelope even further in regards to engineering perfection. I am really enjoying this kit! So far, I have used the Baracudacals resin seat with backpad, resin cockpit door, and HGW seatbelts. I also have a set of Master gun barrels for her but otherwise will be built OOB aside from the decals.

Great to see it in desert colors and I can agree on the quality is perfect I got a bit nervous gluing the components to gather destroying the fine detail.

Johan- Yes, I am a bit nervous about that as well! The ultra-fine detail (especially the delicate rivets) have me a bit concerned should any seams need more than a swipe with the sanding stick.

I agree- as much as I DO love the other marks, I have wanted to build a Mk.VIII since the IX was first announced. Hoping to build a few more of these, namely the Aussie Spits with and without the shark's teeth.

Like Derek said, it seems there's Spitfires everywhere! Nice progress so far, how do you find using the belts?

If you do build more, Ian at Ad Astra has masks for the Grey Nurse markings. I have them and they're going onto my Mk VIII build.

Thanks Carl! Overall, I liked the belts very much. I was a bit intimidated when I first saw how detailed they were, but in the end I was pleased with them. The buckles are VERY small, and I managed to feed the carpet monster four of them! Luckily, I was able to replace them with buckles from an Eduard set. My only issue (and a very small one at that) with them is in the instructions they tell you to crumple the straps into a little ball to crease them and give them some life, but I found the tiny thin straps difficult to this to. I think next time I will crumple the entire sheet, then cut them out. Might work better that way. Thanks for the head's up on the AdAstra masks, I do plan to get a set of their markings for another Mk.VIII down the road!

Small update today! The cockpit pieces fit together so precisely, that I didn't even bother to glue them together before installing them into the fuselage halves. They seem to lock in all by themselves, and the tiny amount of wiggle might come in handy later on when installing later bits. Due to the limitations of the injection molding process, the very fine lines of rivets on the very tops of the fuselage were not round depressions like the rest of them, but rather ultra-shallow oblong depressions. I took a sewing needle with the pointy end slightly flied down to better match the size of the other rivets and redid them. The fuselage halves do not seem to fit as closely as I would like, but then again there might be a sprue attachment point that I didn't clean up well enough. I'll have another look before committing to glue.

I also failed to get the back portions of the fuselage inserts seated 100% correctly, so there is a slight gap where they meet at the lower back end. Entirely my fault this is! :BANGHEAD2:

Frank, really check the fuselage mating surfaces or anything that might be hindering the fuselage halves from coming together cleanly. This is one kit that fits so well, you shouldn't have need for any filler at all on the upper spine. Any extra work here will go a long way to preserving the extremely fine rivet detail by minimizing unnecessary sanding. I found I had to use a little Mr. Surfacer 500 on the lower wing to fuselage join but that was very minimal. The only area I found that gave me any real grief at all was the gun inserts on the wing leading edges. That really surprised me as the entire rest of the kit just wants to fall together.
