After being exiled to the Shelf of Doom 3 years ago, this model is finally making it's way toward completion.

I orginally started this kit to participate in the Carrier Aircraft GB, but it got shelved before completion. It survived a flood in the basement (3 feet of water) as well (but the Yellow Wings decals got destroyed).

Here is the kit box and contents:

I managed to get the upper wing together and add the missing compass housing to the underside of the top wing:

It languished like this until I decided to finish this off while I am waiting for my replacement Yak-1b decals to arrive :)

Added some details to the cockpit, scratch built the throttle control, replaced the seat, made the frame behind the seat, added seat belts from Tamiya tape and some boxes on the starboard side from the spares box. Also made the bulkhead that goes behind the seat to block off the rear fuselage on the real thing:

Looks good when everything is closed up :)

Thanks for looking!

Here are a couple of photos of everything stuck together (but not glued), showing the excellent fit of the main components of this old kit:

This'll be great. We (I), don't see near enough of these types getting modeled.

Nice one Doug. I've been looking for one of these kits for a while now myself, but don't recall ever seeing a WiP thread of one before. Should look terrific when it's done.

Doug
Glad to see you back in the saddle on this one. A classic kit if a classic aircraft. Nothing like the Golden Age of Aviation. Sure wish they would produce more kits of the era.
Looking forward to following along.

Doug,
Nice re-start on a great kit. I have this one in the stash, as well as a set of Yellow Wings decals. If you'd like to use some of the decals I wont be using, send me an IM with your address and I'll share with ya! :speak_cool: When I get around to building the kit, I'll be using a Vector replacement engine on mine, so if you need some extra parts I may have some of those to assist too. Oh and one last thing..I have an extra copy of the P-12/F4B in Action book. I dont really need two copies, so if you think you may be interested let me know.
All the best to your build,
Paul

Wow, you really are on the roll, Doug ... or maybe just restless :P

I've been following with interest ScanmanDan's thread on this subject in the Multi-wing GB. I'm sure I'll see yours finished sooner ;)

Thanks for your kind comments everyone!

@ Kevin - you can still pick up the Bf2C pretty cheap, and it's an easier build since it does not have the wing halves fit issue to deal with.

@ Paul - thanks for your kind offer, I got another set of Yellow Wings Decals for the kit, so I should be good, however if something gets messed up (a good possibility when I am building), I'll let you know. I've also got the Squadron book, but actually don't think it's very useful. I got better info from photographing the F4B-4 at the Navy Museum in Pensacola :)

Did not get too much progress made today. Just sealed up the fusleage and started working on improving the fit of the other components.

Here is the bottom of the fuselage almost all smoothed out:

Posted Image

And the top:

Posted Image

I'll replace the lost raised rivets on the bottom and the two rows on the top with these:

Posted Image

I added some styrene shims to the gear part to improve the fit:

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

And also on the cowl cover back edge:

Posted Image

And finally, I ground out the insides of the vertical stab attachments to get a good fit with these parts:

Posted Image

Tomorrow should prove to be equally exciting, as I refine the fit of the parts and the filler, attach them and get them finished off. If I get time, I may try to use the Archer Transfer rivets as well :)

Thanks for looking!

Doug

Yeah Doug, got me one of those already (with some Yellow Wings decals too). Of the 4 inter-war types that Hasegawa released in 1/32, I've got that one and the P-26; still on the lookout for the other two.

Nice work there DougN.

It'll be back on the Shelf of Doom as soon as the Yak stickers hit the door.
