OK, here's my entry into the Group Build: Doyusha's N1K2-J "George". This is the later low-wing version, and quite a fine kit too. Its two major shortcomings are the cockpit and the engine. I'm not sure if I'll do anything about the engine yet, but the ridiculous cockpit will need to be addressed. The cockpit floor is positioned around about where the pilot's knees would be, to accommodate an erstwhile motorisation assembly beneath it.

I received this kit as a gift from a friend, and found inside it a set of Eduard painting masks for the canopy and wheels, as well as a set of pre-coloured photo-etched seat belts. Cool! Even the decal sheet looks decent, though who knows how they'll perform.

Can anybody recommend some decent references for this aircraft? I'll definitely need something that shows me what the real cockpit looked like!

Kev,

that is an other good pick up.
I have this one in the stash and it looks like a good kit if you put aside the pit, engine and landing gear I would say.
Nothing that you can not fix my friend!

It's a great kit appart from the cockpit ofcourse. I build it several years ago and didn't have any problems at all.

Hey Kevin!, I don't have any info in front of me, but would a motor out of a 'Frank' work on this critter? I know they're both 2000hp, and might be the same? Maybe even real close as far as the reduction case and diameter? I think I have an extra un-built Frank motor you could use, is why I'm asking. I can measure the diameter of the motor I'm building now if you want to see if it'll fit in your cowl? Lemme know,OK?! Russ

Yes, the engines I believe are the same. The designations between army and navy might be different but the engines are identical.

I have the Aero Detail reference and the Gakken reference on the N1K2...let me know what you need.

Great subject for this GB Kevin, I'm gonna watch this one closely! This was initially my first choice for the GB. Can't wait to see what you do with it....sounds like you have a little help from Russ also!

Hey Russ, thanks (again!) buddy. TimC says they're the same engine, so that's good enough for me. I haven't even started the research phase yet, so I'm still in the dark about most of the specifics. Yeah, measure it up and we'll see if it fits.

I had contemplated using a Frank engine on mine, but Hasegawa's is half hollow from the Frank kit- I also thought about casting the front row of cylinders and reduction gear casing, and modifying those to the Shiden's specs.......Not sure how to hit that one yet...

Anyway, Thanks for sharing- Nice kit overall! I want to build Kanno's aircraft!

So how does this kit compare to the Revell George kit? The Revell ones seem to command more $$$ on ebay from what I have seen, and I am curious as to why. If they are comparable, then maybe I should try to snag a Doyusha kit to build.

So how does this kit compare to the Revell George kit? The Revell ones seem to command more $$$ on ebay from what I have seen, and I am curious as to why. If they are comparable, then maybe I should try to snag a Doyusha kit to build.

The Revell kit is the early mid wing version N1K1 originally derived from the Rex floatplane (not the other way around !) The Revell kit is one of urban legend with the molds sinking somewhere in the Pacific along with the Jack and Tony. That's the main reason for the high price. You can't get them any longer. The Doyusha (Swallow) kit is an N1K2 low wing version. Molds are still around. A very nice kit except for the cockpit because the kit was made to have the prop spin and roll on the floor. If you can scratch build an interior, you can have yourself a very nice late war Japanese fighter. The difference in the versions is kind of like an Allison P-51A Mustang compared to a P-51D. Hope this helps
