Ok guys,

I have to say that dispite the theme of this GB is great and gives many build options, I did not find my definitive topic until late those days.

I have been through several options (TBF, Zero just to name those 2) but the more I think about it, the more I think I should try to scratchbuild this B5N torpedo bomber. I will possibly enter the Zeke I intendeed to build (until I changed my mind...) in the short GB if the Kate goes either very well or completly wrong .

So, there is no fancy pic of the box and its content here and I am not even talking about aftermarket stuffs
The only things I could have shot are my knife, glue and putty as well as a hudge pile of evergreen... but I guess there is no real need in that

I have no sharp idea where to start or how to do that build plus I only managed to collect limited documentations/information but I think this is the fun

I have the following:
- Bunrindo - Famous Airplanes n2 - Nakajima B5N
- Profile 141 - Nakajima B5N Kate
- Maru Mechanic 47 - Nakajima B5N Kate

I was not able to find anything else but this so if anyone as some more info (especially the cockpit area!) that they are willing to share anyhow, I would be delighted.

Well, lets hope for the best and wait for the start in the following days!

I have bought plans from him for models I scratch built. He also has packets of photographs for sale.

Another source is 1/33 paper card models. The inside formers are ready to cut out. I usually take it to a xerox machine and scale it up by a factor of 1.03125 to get 1/32 scale. I have a copy of the Kate in paper. Let me know if you need it. Write me using my email: auslend@snet.net

Try to avoid plans that are used for flying models. They are almost always modified from scale to make the model fly better.

Whoooeeee! You never cease to amaze me dude. I like your style Loic!!! I too am starting out with a pile of plastic sheets. Glad to see there will be another scratch-built entry in this group-build, hurray!
Is there an engine available to use as a base? Where are you going to start...the wings, fuselage, or what? Ohhhh, I've got so many questions, I don't know which to ask first.
If anybody is capable of pulling off a scratch-built Kate, it's you buddy! Can't wait to see some pics of the progress. Oh my, this is going to be good! Later, Russ

Hello guys!

first of all, thanks to all of you for your support and tips (Stephen), much appreciated

Soooo.... I have been searching the internet like a dog and finally managed to find some data, 3D views, etc... that will be of help. I have scaled up and print out drawings that seams accurate accoring to my sources so I have a base for my work.

As per the Tempest project, I intend to use some bits and pieces from other aircraft in order to build this lady and especially the good old Zeke... Hey good news, I have one extra Revell one in the stash that I will most probably never ever build other wise

After a few checking, I find out some good and bad as per following list:

Good news are:
- as I secretly expected, the rear part of the Zeke fuselage is very similar to the Kate one to say the less, I will be able to use a Zeke fuse for that part assuming a reasonable amount of work. Main difficulty is that the tail plans are fitted in a different place.
- the cowling is also very similar as to the Zeke one so the latest can certainly be used as a base
- also, the engine is the good old Sake 21.... as per the Zeke
- the centre part of the wing is quite basic
- the wheel well and landing gear are quite basic too (at least when compared to the Tempest ones!)

Bad news are:
- the tail planes (vertical and horizontal) are quite different in both shape, chord and width as per the Zeke: some heavy work required here
- the wings are very different and my initial plan to eventually use the Zeke wings to build the outer folding part of the Kate wing is not going to be a piece of kate... oups sorry... a piece of cake
- the front sections of the fuselages (between wind screen and cowling) have nothing in common at all


All in all, this is not too bad! I can not see that project being much more difficult than the Tempest. One major difference still is that I did have loads of documentation, info, data and similar stuff on the Beast and I feel quite "nacked" when the Kate is concerned and especially the cockpit area.

May I ask the community for some help? If any one of you guys may have a 1/48th scale Kate unbuilt, I would really appreciate if you could post a couple of pics of the cockpit parts. Thanks in advance.

I will go and buy 50 kg of sand paper and 10 kg of putty in the next days and I will hopefully be able to start working during the weekend
