Hi folks,

Project is alive again - as part of a Spanish Civil War group build over on Britmodeller: Click here...

Very cool work. I have one of those Combat kits and have always been tempted to fill it with Fallschirmjaeger.

Hi folks - thanks for the kind words - I think I've found my MoJo on this one and making good progress!

And - if I can crack this one I'll have more confidence with the Constellation! :(

I'm afraid I'm too lazy to duplicate my build thread here - it can be seen on the Britmodeller site...

Here's a taster:

OK - been a long while since I did anything on this - but inspired by the superb JU52 Christian is doing at the moment I thought some LSPers would like to see what I'd been getting up to over on Britmodeller.

PLEASE NOTE - these are old pix and build notes!!!

So root around for something the resin won't stick to - first thought printers aluminium litho sheet - but didn't have any immediately to hand.

OK - Have a coffee and think about it. Eureka - emptied the plastic milk container and realised it was made out of a plastic that wouldn't stick to the resin.

So - out with the scissors and masking tape to make an in-situ mould:

Posted Image

Posted Image

The plastic was pulled tight over the base of the fuselage - with additional tape being used down the sides to ensure no embarrassing leaks when I poured the resin in via the cockpit side of the hole:

Posted Image

Here's the new resin 'floor' going off...

Posted Image

And view from underside - it's filled the mould!

Posted Image

Bit of spare resin? Ah - backs of the seats need filling in:

Posted Image

Ant the other big hole - on a separate pour:

Ok - a short while later (another useful property of the resin is it's fast curing time) - and we're ready to peel everything away:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Looking good! A small amount of resin where I don't want it - but easily sanded...

So - first pass sand with the sanding bar and 180 grit wet and dry - used wet - starting to get nice and flat now:

Posted Image

Followed by a smear of Revell Tube Putty:

Posted Image

Next step in my plan for resin domination - the faces of the wing roots need truing up and the plastic is, again, fairly thin - easy - fill with resin - one side at a time:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Followed by the floor to ensure the width is maintained and nothing distorts:

Posted Image

This is now a very solid base structure. Will give the Revell putty a few days to harden and sand off - then get the sanding bar on those wing root faces to true everything up.

More developments next time :)

Had an hour of daylight after putting my two year old to bed - so out with the sanding bar, a foam sanding block and some 600 grit wet and dry - and I think we're getting there!

Wing roots have been trued up (close enough for government work) and the underside almost as smooth as a baby's behind. A little more fettling - then a coat of primer and I'll mark out the opening to the floor for the gunner/bomb aimer.

Son Cameron - aged 25 months (NOTE - He's 4 now!!) - loves the 'airplanes' in daddy's cabinets and. well, wanted to help...

So - starter for 10 - Camerons' contribution to the project today:

Started the day by cutting out and prepping the inner wing areas - and following the theory that a picture speaks a thousand words:

Posted Image

Yes - daylight - sanded to perfection ;)

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Wanted to add a little more strength to the front joint - so guess what?

Nah - you weren't even close...

I surprised myself and decided to use some casting resin - so more masking tape to form a mould - and - whilst I was at it - I thought I'd sort the front engine bulkhead on the fuselage:

Ready for resin....

To mix the resin my favourite method for small amounts is to use a clear 35mm film canister - and pour equal amounts of each liquid - they don't initially mix - as you can see - which helps hugely.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Lid on - a good shaking - then pour...

And here's the result on front fuselage after attacking with the bar sander:

Posted Image

Wing inner sections leaked - so I quickly poured off the excess - removed the tape - and cleaned up the inside leaving a small amount of resin inside the joint which should suffice for now...

On a roll - I decided I'd prep the tail fin:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

And bonded the respective halves together using Plastic Weld...

Posted Image

Got carried away - and prepped the horizontal stabilisers:

Posted Image

Then thought - oh Phuket (yes - of course I mean that place in Thailand...) ;)

In for a penny - in for some wings...

First off - trim the trailing edge 'step' with scalpel - carefully scoring from the inside:

Posted Image

Followed by a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong session with the sanding bar - and this is where we are:

Posted Image

More news when there's, erm, more news I guess!

Have fun!

Anyhoo - a little progress today - started on bulkheads and getting everything ship shape...

Firstly - I'd previously cut a section out from the fuselage at the base of the rudder as the moulding was poor and didn't line up - so first step to square everything up with a scalpel:

Posted Image

Next - couple of pieces of 20thou sheet glued in place:

Posted Image

After the Plastic Weld had 'gone off' - not long in today's sunshine - trimmed roughly with sprue cutter - then scalpel - then sanding stick:

Now - stuff Ive been putting off - I hate making bulkheads that fit!

First one - the bulkhead next to the door - as this on is a certain position and can formm a reference point for others behind. Base easy as it forms a square the same width as the floor:

Posted Image

Lines were then marked where bulkhead was inline with the base of the roof.

To get the curve in the roof I dug out my trusty profile guage - and pre-set the available 'prongs' to the width of the fuselage - so minimise distortion of the roof section when I took the profile:

Posted Image

Profile was taken and transferred to my bulkhead 'blank':

Posted Image

Bulhead then trimmed and sanded - and hey presto:

Posted Image

Even better - she fits perfectly with floor and the rest of the fuselage:

Posted Image

Now that fits - time to mark out the door and cut out:

Posted Image

Opening made and neatened up - time to add some corrugations - firstly on the back. Cut oversize, bond, trim back...

Posted Image

And here I've started detailing the front:

Posted Image

Now full of coffee and planning another few hours tonight as I don't have to go to work in the am :)

Have FUN!
