It is finally time for my first LSP.  With the HK B-17 coming my way in the near future I wanted to practice my techniques on something else first.  I've been wanting to build a P-47 for awhile so I felt this was the perfect time. It arrived a few days ago:

The paint scheme isn't fully decided on yet, but it will be a bit of a what if.  I'll be using kits world decals that I have for my B-17, and I'll use the other nose art "Sally B".  I want to get a feel for how these decals behave which is why I opted to go this route.  Now I'm just going through my squadron markings book trying to decide on what squadron to paint this Jug in.

First item of business was to verify that I can assemble this without all the interior items that will never be seen.  It appears the cockpit has a few little ledges to rest on that will allow me to bypass the extra interior items.

Then, before bed I sat down and did a quick dry fit.  It seems that this should be a pretty enjoyable kit as the fit seems rather nice.  Based on reviews I don't expect too many major issues.

I'm all ears for advise as I'm really trying to make this a nice build to get my confidence up for the big bomber.  Thanks for checking in.

Very nice approach to this build, especially your intention of deleting some internal detail structures without compromising other parts, i'll be sure to follow this one as i was thinking about the same method of building.

cheers,

Jack.

Ok, I promise I'm working on this.  I have completed the cockpit, and I'm very happy with it.  I should state, this is completely OOB, so for better or worse I used the photo etch belts.

Then it was time to knock out the needed bits of interior for engine mounting.  I won't be adding all the interior ducting as it isn't needed.

Then, a hint as to the color scheme I have chosen...

Next, my plan is to finish some interior work then get the main fuselage close up.  I've already learned a lot to apply to my HK B-17 and I'm really enjoying this 1/32 world.  I've already got my eye on the Revell Bf109.

Thanks guys. I apologize for my poor updates, but I've been busy and forgot to keep track of stuff. The main fuselage is together, with windscreen attachedand blended in. Wings are built up and I'm working through the clean up of those horrible gun panels. I decided to go with the 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron markings.

Work continues...
I have started on the engine by trying to build up different sections before paint.
QpdESpI.jpg

I'm also hammering away on the wings. Fill, sand, repeat...
lpFCZAM.jpg
Restoring the panels is going to be a pain on those wings.

I'm also cleaning up the fuselage still. Most panel lines are back.
T4wWsfd.jpg

Also, I was able to install the stabs. A little seam clean up but not too bad.

Today I needed to paint the canopy framing so I threw some paint on the gun panels to see how it looked. I was quite pleased. For how bad the panels fit, I'm content with how they cleaned up. Now it's more panel line restoration.
4MeTXbz.jpg

I also painted the drop tanks and engine cylinders. Hopefully tomorrow I can get more done on the engine and wings.

While I was at home last time I made some progress on my P-47. I painted and built the radial. It's my first radial engine so it was definitely a learning experience. I don't think it's quite done, but I'm on the fence with how detailed I want it.
w29zEwf.jpg

I'm also got the main fuselage and wings ready for paint.
R6jAscW.jpg

Then it was time to see what I had. Did I clean those panels well enough?
Sh6G222.jpg

I'm quite thrilled with how it came out. It's not first place at a contest worthy, but considering those awful gun panels I'm pleased as punch. Next time I'm home the main colors go on.

Great job on the P-47! If you want something to read to keep you inspired check out "Fighter Group" by Jay Stout. About the 352nd Fighter Group in England....started in P-47's and transitioned to the P-51. He also wrote "Hells Angels" about the 303rd Bomb Group that I had read. My inspiration to build "Knockout Dropper" B-17F with my HK kit.
