Guillow's B-29 in more than Limbo...

Recommended Posts

Started this balsawood kit back in 04' and still have not gotten my rear to finish it.It's going to be a B-29A with the early style prop blades and hubs.Using JR resin cast wheels and tires off the B-17 detail he makes. Not sure as to doing the 29 with the markings of "THUMPER" on the nose or the "ENOLA GAY".It's about 60% done to the good, but to much om my plate at the present time. But hopefully start her before X-Mas and see what happens then.Larry

That sounds like a great project. It would be most impressive when finished. Some times you have to just work in small sessions like 15 to 30 minites. It is superising what you can get dun this way.

Hi Larry,

I have the same problem with the Guillows B-24 in 1/28 scale.

For some reason I love that lumbering beast.

B-17 lovers still say that the -24 wsa the crate that the -17 was delivered in.

but the -24 had a greater range, and carried a larger payload.

The B-24 was much harder to fly and was much more tiring to its pilots than the B-17. Maybe that was the reason the USAAF was so quick to scrap the Liberator after the war and keep the Flying Fortress on for so long after.

Whatever.

I am trying to get off the mark with the covering. I am sore tempted to use my tried and true method of making a light weight hollow core and then filling the thing with light weight spackle. This stuff is made with phenolic microballoons so it is light. After I have the spackle bulging out between the formers, longerons and ribs, then file and sand it down to the exact shape.

Next, cover the beastie with an ultralight fiberglass cloth and hit it with epoxy, not polyester, resin. The reason for the epoxy is that it will not attack the vacuformed goodies, like the nacelles and clear parts. A final sanding and one has a very strong model. As usual; no landing gear as my airplane models are depicted as in flight, for the most part.

What would really be sweet would be to convert it to the navy version, the PB4Y-2 Privateer. But then, if I am going to do that much work why not make a duplicate of the 1/32 ID Models vacuform B-24 and convert that to the Privateer. Then make vacufom parts of that. I already have the 1/33 version of the Privateer in paper card so I can use that to start.

So many projects to do and so little time.

As Jackie Gleason used to say about life, "How sweet it is!"

Steph,

Well Now!It seems that between u and me.We have our work cut out for us.But u can do it.Or maybe it's that i just can't seem to get the rear in gear.I know u can do it justice.Larry

Yes, well I have seen your work and I doubt if mine will be anywhere near as good as yours.

There are (and were) a few master builders around. You and Dave Thompson were two I know of and have as friends. Or had, in Davids case. Gosh I miss him.

I am sure that you will do a super job with your B-29. As for me, we will see what we will see.

The main thing is getting our butts in gear and gettin a going on them.

Atcha later.

Stephen

Awesome!

Great to finally see you in a group build Larry. Do you think a couple of months will give you enough time? Or should we have another "stalled projects" GB next year?

Send me a PM if you need more plastic.

Keith.

You know I have artwork done for a decal set for a B-29:

Not this particular aircraft, but another in the unit with the Pirate triangle on it. I did it for Derek, so would have to get his ok, but if you need some decals and like this unit...

Ray,

The 29 is still in limbo.Tried to do some work on it last week and ripped two of the wing panels on the top of each wing.Got to figure out another way as to laying very, very thin sheets of plastic on them.Might have a solution though.

For the decals and the pic u posted on that 48th scale 29.Very NICE indeed as to what u have done for that sheet. My big delima is for what 29 i was going to do.Was thinking of doing "THUMPER".But not sure now as to what u have mentioned here. But i'll let u see what u can do for the sheet of decals and we'll go from there for what i need to do.Thanks for the offer and i'm really thinking about it,VERY HARD!Larry

Larry,

ENOLA GAY while historic is a pretty boring looking artwork.

Equally historic BUT better looking art you might consider are:

"the great artiste"

"Bock's car"

"Thumper" - you just can't beat Disney artwork

or possibly Korean War art some of it is VERY risque and you could ad the gloss black underbelly on it.

I have 6 or seven bomber nose art books if you need me to check on one.

I can also put together some nose art decals for you if you wish - God knows youve done me plenty of favors in my modeling path.
