RF-4B

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Here is the begininng of a long desired project of mine. I have always wanted to make a USMC RF-4B. Since I was a kid and I used to hang out just outside the perimeter fence at MCAS El Toro I wanted to have a model of this awesome airplane. I even remember getting a hold of the old 1/32 scale Revell F-4E thinking I would just paint it grey! HAh...oh good times.

Anyway, the time has come to at least start in. The first thing, and what I saw as the toughest, was going to be the cockpit. Much has been written about the Revell Phantoms. Reference Pierre's awesome work and Thierry's tweaks lists. Armed with the Detail and Scale, Aerofax, and assorted references. I dug in.

Here we go...

Wow

its like we are having a "mini" f-4 GB over here :o

good to see another one being build, i found the tweak list veery thorough and also huge but still, I think the revell f-4's are the best bang for bucks.

Wow another phantom phreak :o what is this three or four now. The start you got going on is excellent so far. I havn't reached the bang seat yet, those will go in right before the canopy goes on. You have a long road ahead of you. But the way I look at it if one can take a dog of a kit and make it look good, the you did something.

Keep up the good work.

Really nice work. You are making me want to reserrect my F 4 J. My J is nearly wooped, but I droped it and all the work I did in the Intake cracked. I now have some fod covers, but I can not bring myself to use them lol. I think it can be phixed. Anyway, which bird are you doing?? You need to look close as the last 12 or 18 rf4 bs produced had the "thick" wing.

Ohhhh SNAP!

Busted!

Yah, I was wondering if someone was going to catch that. Well good job Larry.

I haven't done much on the Gunfighter since my last post. I tend to skip around on projects alot. It kinda bugs me. I have been looking at it and wanting to get back on it though. Maybe I will do a little work on it in the next couple of weeks.

Remember too that I am in college now (at the age of 33) and during the semester there is no time for models. Once I get some time off, usually three weeks, I cram in all the work I can AFTER bringing my home back into order and "re-humanizing" myself and getting re-aquainted with my lovely wife, but when school starts up again, I have to drop it all. Then during the semester I find another project that I can't wait to do when I get out again and...well, you know the rest of the story.

Nope. the newer (F-4E, F, RF-4C) all have recessed lines. You may be thinking of the older ('70's) releases?

Which, BTW, did come with some sort of full intakes IIRC. I wonder if anyone has tried to mate the two.

I came across some additional info on the F-4 cockpit, thanks to some of the articles here on LSP, and decided that to do it right, I needed to rebuild the rear cockpit bulkhead so that it is vertical. This has necessitated alot more work. Basicaly, a scratch rear pit. I will try to post more pics tonight.

Thanks Larry. You are always so generous with parts.

I have a Tamiya pit and a bunch of panel parts (remember the resin stuff for the F-8?), but, the RF-4B pit is a totaly different beast. The front pit is pretty much the same, but the rear is a mix of Air Force and Navy styles, with a unique panel and a small right console with the vertical wall of the Navy pit. I have drawn some art for the panels to help me scratch it and I will be using spare castings and a little styrene for the consoles. You'll see.

For now, the hardest part is done. The rest should be cake!

Haha!
